I saw way too few films this year. But the only one that stood out was Mad Max. The other ones I saw in the theater were The Martian and Star Wars, both of which were just good.

I saw The Hateful Eight on 70mm the other day. Possibly the most amazing Cinema experience I have ever had. Obviously excluding the time I saw The Tuxedo and was the only person in the theater.

Edit: Just realised this is not at all the appropriate thread.

I saw way too few films this year. My running has replaced a lot of the time I used to go see films and I've less and less wanted to sit still for two hours. Of the ones I did see.

Great movies:

1. Mad Max
One of the best action films I've ever seen.

2. Anamolisa
Really cool Charlie Kaufman film, cleverly using stop motion to tell a parable about depression.

Good films:

3. The Martian
Well executed film but leans way too much on the sentimental.

4. Star Wars 7
Neither exceeded nor fell short of expectations. Introduced great new characters but way too close to the story of the original. Could have used more original ideas.

5. H8ful Eight
The more I think about it and read about it the more I appreciate it. Especially after I read an article about the idea that the film was shaming the audience for liking Django Unchained, dispelling the myths Django perpetuated. It just didn't get me much invested in the characters.

Okay:

6. Avengers 2

Entertaining at points, lots of amusing moments. All around decent film.

So many films I need to catch up on, especially the ones that got a shorter play in the US. The Assassin, Carol, Inherent Vice, pretty much all the rest of the Sight & Sound top 10.

Just got back from seeing Hail Caesar. It was pretty weak. I'm a huge fan of the Coen's, but this had ads making it look like one of their fun movies like O Brother Where Art Thou, it was trying to be Barton Fink, and ended up being an inconsistent mishmash of themes vaguely satirical of the mechanisms of Hollywood. Almost like the film was dressing up a way for writers to complain about the size of their cut.
