Films of the 2010s: 2013

Post by Petri »

OK I start the thread. bootsy if you want to count and release the results I'm fine with that. :)

The rules:

You can post a list of anywhere between 1 and 20 films (or more, but only 20 will be counted) from the period we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the RYM list and the top 20 of each period will go on to the final top 100. The deadline is September 30th.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50
2. 40
3. 35
4. 30
5. 25
6. 20
7. 18
8. 16
9. 14
10. 12
11. 10
12. 9
13. 8
14. 7
15. 6
16. 5
17. 4
18. 3
19. 2
20. 1

However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the films released in 2013:

IMDb
RYM
Films101
RottenTomatoes

If you vote for 4 movies or less, this is the adjusted scores:
4 votes
1. Movie 40 p
2. 30 p
3. 20 p
4. 15 p

3 votes
1. Movie 30 p
2. 20 p
3. 15 p

2 votes
1. Movie 20 p
2. 15 p

1 vote
1. Movie 15 p

I started college, so less time to view movies. I may have a Top 20 at the end of the month, I may not. But regardless, here is a list for you.

1) The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
2) Snowpiercer
3) 12 Years a Slave
4) The Wind Rises
5) Fruitvale Station
6) Before Midnight
7) Jodorowsky's Dune
8) The World's End
9) The Tale of Princess Kaguya
10) Her
11) The Dance of Reality
12) Nebraska
13) Gravity
14) Rush
15) The Congress
16) Stray Dogs
17) Inside Llewyn Davis
18) Ida
19) 42
20) Much Ado about Nothing
Snowpiercer would have easily won 2014, but I decided I liked Catching Fire just a wee bit more.

1) Short Term 12
2) The World's End
3) Nebraska
4) Her
5) 12 Years a Slave
6) Snowpiercer

I'll stop there because other movies I enjoyed don't need a push and are either not that great but with fantastic actor performances (Blue Jasmine, American Hustle) or not that good but technically impressive (Gravity).
Basically, this vote is just a love letter to Short Term 12 and the oh so lovely Brie Larson.

Very, very glad to see a couple of other votes for Destin Daniel Cretton's criminally underrated Short Term 12, a magnificently naturalistic portrait of the counselors and residents of a live-in facility for troubled minors. As Nassim states, lead actress Brie Larson (who plays a counselor who cares far too much about her charges and far too little about herself) is indeed lovely as can be, but she's first and foremost a fantastically gifted actress (she's also got a supporting role in my #6, James Ponsoldt's also-underrated Miles Teller/Shailene Woodley teen romantic drama The Spectacular Now).

Larson is about to receive an enormous amount of attention (including from awards groups, most likely) for the film adaptation of Emma Donoghue's life-in-captivity novel Room; the more her profile grows, the more people are apt to go back and see Short Term 12 and find themselves asking, "How did I miss this?" To everyone here: please try to see the film before voting ends.

List updated to a full 20.

Much Ado about Nothing and 42 move into the last two spots. I thought they were decent, just barely qualify for an extended list.

Very pleasantly surprised to see Snowpiercer get so many votes. I thought its campy title and our forum's "sci-fi ghetto" would eliminate it quickly, but now it has a very realistic chance of advancing!
