Films of the Early 20th Century: 1941-1943

Post by BleuPanda »

The rules:

You can post a list of anywhere between 1 and 15 films (or more, but only 15 will be counted) from the period we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the RYM list and the top 15 of each period will go on to the final top 150. The deadline is February 28th.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50
2. 40
3. 30
4. 20
5. 15
6. 10
7. 9
8. 8
9. 7
10. 6
11. 5
12. 4
13. 3
14. 2
15. 1

However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the films released in this period:
RYM: http://rateyourmusic.com/films/chart?pa ... &year=1941
http://rateyourmusic.com/films/chart?pa ... &year=1942
http://rateyourmusic.com/films/chart?pa ... &year=1943
IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/year/1941
http://www.imdb.com/year/1942
http://www.imdb.com/year/1943

If you vote for 4 movies or less, this is the adjusted scores:
4 votes
1. Movie 40 p
2. 30 p
3. 20 p
4. 15 p

3 votes
1. Movie 30 p
2. 20 p
3. 15 p

2 votes
1. Movie 20 p
2. 15 p

1 vote
1. Movie 15 p

Were you by any chance in the Oscar jury of 1942?

Nope, I just love Ford (and How Green being in my top 5 Ford films) more than Welles, he was my #2 after all. I don't worship at the altar of Kane, great film as it also is. I strongly feel that How Green was one of the very few times the Academy got it right. For the 42 Oscars, on the other hand, they should have awarded Welles for the Ambersons, (plus, you know, not butchered it to death).

What the hell is that comment supposed to mean anyways? I also outranked Kane with another film of his, Powell and Pressburger, and Dreyer. It is still in my top 5, not really that low a placement in my opinion.

PS: I'm sorry if this post is aggressive sounding, but your comment is rather snarky sounding itself.

Here is a defense of How Green versus Kane by one of the foremost film scholars in America, Kristin Thompson: http://www.davidbordwell.net/blog/2012/ ... ssumption/

That, more or less, underlines my own reasons for loving the film.

In the end, however, I figure that it depends on how much you love Ford's cinema. How Green is a very characteristic Ford film, so great for Ford buffs and not so great for non-buffs.

I know Welsh people who detest the film as well, because Ford makes them all Irish instead. This is not surprising considering Ford was an Irishman himself. I don't usually require much accuracy in my films, however, unless it is, literally, a documentary. "Realistic" and "realism": this is a too far-fetched term for any narrative film, I have come to the conclusion of.

The Italian "Neo-Realists" also heavily staged scenes and gave the people lines in their films. Frankly, those plots can be pretty sentimental at some moments, too. Still doesn't detract from their greatness in my eyes however.

Citizen Kane is undoubtedly a great film and perhaps the most influential film in history. However I would argue against it being the greatest film of all time on several counts. :)

Short version, I don't think the film has spectacular pacing.
