Films of the 1960s: THE RESULTS

Post by Petri »

Good morning, afternoon, evening or night. It's time to release the results of the Final of the 60s movie poll.
Before I start the countdown let me say few words about the presentation and introduce the voters.

You can find in the results the famous fans and haters sections. I know that many of you don't hate any of the movie in the top 100 (actually I'm pretty sure some really dislikes some of the movies :greetings-waveyellow: ) but it's informative and also often fun to see everyones bottom choices. I decided that you're fan of a movie if it's in your top 20 (excluding the ones who voted for less than 40 movies - in those cases the movie must be in the first half of the list (for example if you voted for 20 movies you are fan of your top 10) and hater if the movie is in your bottom decile (if you voted 90 movies you are hater of your bottom 9 movies, 50 movies you're hater of bottom 5 etc.)

Commenting the results is more than welcome (I really hope this thread will get lots of replies). Nevertheless there are always people who want to avoid spoilers (even the fake ones) so please don't guess top 20 beforehand or tell everyone that film x (the film that is still in the game) was my #1 etc. I will start another thread for those who want to make predictions.

And now here are the voters of the final of the 60s.

Greg (86 movies voted)
Bonnielaurel (44)
JimmyJazz (96)
Harold (70)
Stephan (42)
Gillingham (73)
Miguel (60)
Michel (96)
antonius (60)
SuperFurry (38)
Henrik (54)
Stone37 (48)
Jirin (54)
Chilton (12)
Bruce (19)
Henry (18)
Petri (88)

So are you ready for the countdown to begin? :music-guitarred:

OK and here we go. I planned to add a (fun) comment from Internet to every movie. Unfortunately it takes too much time. So if you find some funny comments you can send it to me or here and I will add them to the results. Of course it will be even nicer if you comment by yourself. This is also a good point to thank Gillingham for commenting many of the movies he's seen. Thanks GIllingham.

100. Scorpio Rising (1964)

[imgsize 250x360]http://wpcontent.answcdn.com/wikipedia/ ... -anger.jpg[/imgsize]

Director: Kenneth Anger
Points: 697,32
Year rank: #9 of 1964

Fans: None
Haters: Michel #96/96, Stone37 #48/48, Greg 83/86, SuperFurry #36/38 antonius #61/67, Petri #81/88

Comment(s): What a start to our countdown. Leatherclothed gay (nazi!?) motorbikers pimping up their motorbikes and having fun and not so fun with driving and cruising. And then there are those Jesus parts and rock n roll. Wow. I love this list and variety of movies.
By the way they are planning to shoot (or maybe they are even started to shoot the unofficial one) two Tom of Finland movies in Finland (and the official one will (possibly) be the most expensive Finnish movie ever). I guess it can be recommended to the fans of this movie (apparently none of the final voters :?
(This was Charlie Driggs's #1 of the year) (Petri)

Comments from Internet: Can someone explain what is going on during "torture"? Are they raping Elvis Costello? (Joe Mama)

Goldfinger: to me, all James Bond movies are outdated. I thought I was a "hater" too, I looked it up, I have it at 57 of 67 rated movies in total.
Easy Rider: strange that this is so low; great beginning, great ending, but the desert scenes in the middle are a drag on the movie.
Scorpio Rising: too much of a blur to really get into.

:D I watched it several times as a child (I think when we watched it at school when I was 8 years old it was my third time) I think it's better than the rest of the Oscar winning musicals of 60s. One reason is feeling of space (I don't know how to describe it better but just look the opening scene.) My Fair Lady looks like it's shot in the warehouse (probably it has) and West Side Story is (on purpose) like show on the stage on gym of the high school. I like(d) the songs too. Not a big fan though.

Actually, my own favorite movie musicals of the 1960s are the Umbrellas of Cherbourg and the Young Girls of Rochefort by Jacques Demy. My Fair Lady is probably my favorite 60s American musical (I'm a big fan of director George Cukor). West Side Story has its moments (specifically the big dance scenes), but I just really hate The Sound of Music overall.

I didnt expect Easy Rider, Cool Hand Luke and The Great Escape to end up this low. Same goes for Judgment at Nuremberg. They all did quite well in their respective years (except maybe for CHL) and I thought all of these films were quite popular in general.

Although The Sound of Music is in my haters section, I dont dislike it as a musical. I like Petri's comment about space, as most musicals of that age tend to be confined to the studio they were shot in.

.
Yeah some Hollywood movies ended up surprisingly low. There are actually many reason for that. They did quite well in their respective years indeed. One reason for that was that they were the most seen movies (some didn't vote for them in the first round because they had seen 15 better movies per year (in their opion) and even those who voted for them liked other finalists more. The impact of last three voters (the ones who had seen less than 20 movies) wasn't really big. Still the difference in points is bigger between #17 and #18 than let's say #80 and #81 so for example in a way Easy Rider suffered more than some other movies for being last on Henry's list (this effect isn't massive but maybe worth to mention).
Less people had seen those European, Asian (and Soviet) movies that managed to get to the final. But in the final they got the love from the ones who had seen them (and the average score from the rest).
For example Easy Rider was in the first half of the voters final list in only two lists (in your and my list and even in my list it was just 43/88 (I really like all the movies in my top 50 of the finalists). Everyone else put in the last half (or hadn't seen it). Still I was also a bit surprised how bad some of them (well maybe only Easy Rider) succeeded in the final.
The results are very interesting and the individual lists differed a lot from each other. So there are many more big surprises still left.

Umbrellas of Cherbourg is probably my favorite musical of 60s as well. I was very confused because it wasn't even close to get to the final.

Re: Films of the 1960s: THE RESULTS

The next group of five will contain the first (or should I say the last) movie from 1962. Some years seemed to be much more succesful than others (the last of the 1962 is higher than 5 movies from 1964). The thread of 1962 poll is full of disappointed posts in which poster wonders why some of his/her favorites didn't go to final. I must add one movie to that list (actually Gillingham mentioned it already in his post). I watched Ivan's Childhood by Andrei Tarkovsky (which was #11 of the year) only two days after deadline. And it is maybe my favorite of his movies and would have been in top 25 of my list. I'm pretty sure that stuff like Cléo de 5 à 7, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, Ride the High Country and Ivan's Childhood would have beated many of the movies on this list (I wouldn't be surprised if they all had been in the top 50) but this is the spirit of theses decade polls. And I like them a lot. (there's definitely no chance to move to top 15 per year -> top 100 of the decade conventation in movies because I'm sure that most of the forumers (including me) have seen even less movies from 50s than 60s.)
OK let's continue the countdown.

75. Per un Pugno di Dollari [A Fistful of Dollars] (1964)

[imgsize 250x360]http://downloadfreemovies.ca/wp-content ... s-1964.jpg[/imgsize]

Comment(s): I'm actually surprised this movie have so many haters. Probably my favorite Truffaut movie after 400 Blows and I like most of his movies a lot. (Petri)

73. They Shoot Horses, Don't They? ( 1969)

[imgsize 250x360]https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/imag ... TfSqmigW9g[/imgsize]

Comment(s): The Chinese neighbour, if I remember correctly, is an utterly stupid and demeaning stereotype. The film kind of lost my respect after being introduced to him, and didn't regain it afterwards, unfortunately. (Gillingham)

71. 東京オリンピック [Tokyo Olympiad] (1965 )

Comment(s): And here we have the least seen movie of the final (only Greg and JimmyJazz voted for it). A three hour long sport documentary about Tokyo Olympic Games (1964). 67. Hud (1963)

Director: Martin Ritt
Points: 798,01
Year rank: #6 of 1963
Voters: 6
Fans: Greg #14
Haters: JimmyJazz #93/96

Comment(s): Martin Ritt was a director whose movies I hadn't seen a single one before the 60s poll. The Spy Who Came in from Cold (which is still in the game) and Hud (which I liked even more) were both great, unique and very different to each other. Although many of New Hollywood movies were in a way close to this, Hud feels very exquisite (US )movie (Only Last Picture Show comes to mind if I had to recommend something like Hud). Interesting list so far. I'm definitely going to try and watch the ones in the top 25 (at least) that I haven't seen yet.

Shocked and disappointed to see Gertrud and Playtime rank relatively low. Two of my all-time favorite films. Seeing Doctor Zhivago rank higher than Gertrud is also a personal travesty to me, but not going to go into a long diatribe about that film right now

Playtime: Yes I rated it, no I didn't see it all the way through: I turned it off halfway through because I was irritated all the time by the main character. The only film of the 67 I rated that I didn't see all the way through. Even "The Sound of Music" I saw to the end, because my wife loves it.
The Spy Who Came in from the Cold: with a superb performance by Richard Burton.

Some surprises again, like A Bout de Souffle indeed. I'd also expected For a Few Dollars More higher on the list, but what's even more puzzling, is that it ended behind A Fistful of Dollars. In my book, Leone's western trilogy with Eastwood got better with each subsequent film.

Yeah the order of two first Leone movies puzzled me too. I almost wrote a comment about that in comment section of Fistful of Dollars. But there were actually pretty many who voted A Fistful of Dollars higher than For a Few Dollars More.

Pleasantly surprised Chimes at Midnight is still alive.

More surprised Apartment is doing so well. Most sanctimonious and sexist film I've ever seen.

I also thought Breathless would be near the top.

Re: Films of the 1960s: THE RESULTS

Post by Henrik »

Great presentation and very interesting to follow the results!

I have 9 of my 10 favorites left, and I'm really happy about this outcome. However, I also have three haters left. Well I try not to hate any movies or music and instead consider them more as "not for me". The thing I struggle with is that there are a lot more acclaimed films than albums that I don't get. As I have a huge interest in acclaimed stuff in general I have seen quite a lot of "difficult" films despite a fear that I wouldn't like them, hoping it would actually be a "White Album", but more often it turns out to be just another "Trout Mask Replica".

I probably have a negative correlation in this poll with people that I mostly agree with when it comes to music. I don't really have a problem with that, it just puzzles me a bit.

Thanks Henrik. "Not for them" would be nicer name for the haters (beacause I also try not to hate any movie). Maybe in future we use that name or something like that (I remember that Nassim used very funny names (that were related to the album etc.) for the haters in some poll (maybe the best albums and songs of 70s).

Here's #25-#21.

Comment(s): The last part of the one of the best and most important trilogies and war movies in film history was #9 of its year and now in the final it ended up the first of its year. I actually said in the 1961 thread after Stephan released the results: ”It's interesting to see how these movies will manage in the final. It wouldn't surprise me a lot if Human Condition III is the highest ranked 1961 movie in the final.” I'm very glad my prediction became true (although I had Through the Glass Darkly and Last Year at Marienbad even higher in my personal list). Highly recommend this (ten hours long) trilogy to everyone. (Petri)

Here we have fourth #1 of its year which is also #1 of a voter + another #1 of a voter + a movie which would have been my #89/89 if I had voted it.

16. Bonnie and Clyde (1967)

15. The Manchurian Candidate (1962)

14. La Dolce Vita (1960)

[imgsize 250x360]http://home.earthlink.net/~copaceticom1/LaDolceVita.jpg[/imgsize]

Director: Federico Fellini
Points: 919,46
Year rank: #4 of 1960
Voters: 11
Fans: Greg #4, Stephan #9, Harold #12, Gillingham #17
Haters: Henrik #51/54

Comment(s): I have actually seen this (even in the ”movie theatre”) but decided not to vote for it. It was in Midnight Sun Festival in Sodankylä Lapland in 2011 where I finally had opportunity to watch this Fellini classic. The director of the festival introduced the movie (brand new restored copy straight from Italy) and told how he envies us because we see such a masterpiece with so high quality while he has to dinner with one of the guest directors of the festival (maybe it was Atom Egoyan or Apichatpong Weerasethakul). Then the movie started. The print looked very nice indeed but the subtitles were screened so low that it was impossible to see them. So we wathced (with my girlfriend) three hours Marcello Mastroianni partying, driving a car and talking nonsense (or maybe he said something relevant). I felt very frustrated. If I had voted for this the movie would have been definitely my #89/89 but because I have liked the rest of Fellini movies I've seen I will someday give this an another chance (thinkin of this movie makes me angry so maybe not in the near future) :x  . If I had voted this its final placement would have been #18. So the gaps between the final scores are even this high so little that every voter really counts. (Petri)

I think expectations people have from films differ from the expectations people have from film. Everybody expects roughly the same thing from music other than the hardcore academics, they expect a pleasant visceral experience. For film, a vast majority of people judge films based on the strength of the narrative, whereas about half the critics focus more on form and the contemplative aspects of cinema. So when a film like L'aventura or Celine and Julie Go Boating focuses more on visual expressiveness and editing to get it's point across than narrative, and critics praise the hell out of it and most of the audience gets frustrated.

Still confused by why Apartment is doing so well. It basically groups all people who prefer not to be in committed relationships as morally weak and judges them with broad swaths, and then the message of the film is supposed to be to treat women better but all the women in the film are helpless idiots.

OK here are #13-#11. I'm pleasantly surprised to see every one of them this high (again there's is one #1 of its year but not a single #1 of a voter this time in the group of three). Guessing thread is open if you want to guess the order of top 10 (but I remind again don't guess here because I'm sure there are some who are not aware which movies are still in the game and don't want to know before they have been released).

13. Midnight Cowboy (1969)

I definitely dont think people who have seen very few films (say, less than 30) shouldnt be able to vote, but maybe it would be suitable if the pointsystem would be a little different. I dont remember the formula exactly but a number 12 in a list of 20 films should receive more points than a film that wasnt seen.

On another note, Its interesting that the results can be so consistent, in spite of the fact that one voter can make a great difference. Films by the same director, like Hara Kiri and Ningen no Joken III, Armee des Ombres and Samourai ended right next to each other.

I thought the same, because your and my music tastes dont differ that much (at least according to RYM, but I've noticed it in general as well), while our film tastes are quite different (at least in this poll). I guess your more used to 'experimental' music than to experimental film.
But then again, film and music are quite different of course and music generally doesnt ask as mich attention as film.

The formula is sum(i from 1 to n)(2100/((rank of a voter i)+20)). And if voter hasn't seen some movie it got the same score than the average rank score would be (which is totally different than average score of a voter). It works very well in my opinion (I don't have time to write about it more carefully).
I agree that its more probable that if you have seen only 20 movies you have like most of them (because you've watched only the ones you think you will like) than if you have seen all the movies in the top 100. Neverheless we have voters like Greg (sorry for taking you as an exemple Greg :greetings-waveyellow: ) who has seen practically everything but some of the biggest hits of Hollywood. I'm pretty sure the reason isn't that he hasn't have chance to watch those movies (he's even American) but he knows he probably won't like them and decides not to watch them. So I think the score of average rank is fine regardless how many movies you have seen. And if we give more points the movies below median compared the ones he/she hasn't seen in cases voter have seen a small number of movies (less than 30) it would increase the effect of his/her votes. And I would sooner decrease the effect of people who have seen less than others than increase it.
But yeah it's good to talk about score system too (although Henrik's formula (or should I say equation) is almost perfect there is possibility that even better equation can be found. 8-) ;)

I noticed it too. All Bergman's movies (well maybe not all ) were close to each others too.

OK let's start the top 10. #10 is very pleasant surprise (its highest placement was #8 but it was high in almost every list). And in the #9 is the #1 of three voters. It is also least liked movie of one voter (and that voter isn't Jirin)...
