Films of the '60s: 1967

Post by Petri »

I guess it's ok to start the thread of movies of 1967.

Here are the rules copied from the 65 thread (I changed only the links and dead line)

You can post a list of anywhere between 1 and 15 films (or more, but only 15 will be counted) from the year we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the RYM list and the top 10 of each year will go on to the final top 100. The deadline is July 31st.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50
2. 40
3. 30
4. 20
5. 15
6. 10
7. 9
8. 8
9. 7
10. 6
11. 5
12. 4
13. 3
14. 2
15. 1
However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

Here are some lists to remind you of the great (and awful) films released in 1965, from a variety of sources:
IMDb
RYM
Films101
RottenTomatoes

Ah, never heard of her. She seems to be quite big in Britain.

Marketa Lazarova
Warrendale
Terra em Transe
Mouchette
Playtime

The Graduate (1 pt)
Belle de Jour (1 pt)
The Red and the White (1 pt)

I really, really hope Marketa Lazarova wins this vote. It's one of the greatest films of all time, finally got on Criterion this year, and only isn't already canonized because it's from Eastern Europe instead of Western Europe.

Warrendale and Terra em Transe are also great films that I hope everybody gets to see. Warrendale is a documentary that removes the documentarian from the film and makes it seem just like natural observation, and exposes the state of child psychology in the 1960s where they deal with behavioral problems by locking children up and taking away their freedom. Terra em Transe is a Brazilian satire on the politics of bigger powers interfering in poor countries' local politics.

According to RYM and Wikipedia this is from 1968. IMDB says 1967 but I think we have followed RYM dates (even in the cases like Holy Grail). So I move your other votes one spot higher and hope you will vote for The Producers next month. It will be my #2 of the year then.

Okay, I'll keep it for 1968 then. My new number 15 is "Guess who's coming to dinner".

#. Title (Director) - Points/Votes/#1s
1. Bonnie and Clyde (Arthur Penn) - 283 / 11 / 3
2. Le samouraï [The Godson] (Jean-Pierre Melville) - 270 / 6 / 3
3. The Graduate (Mike Nichols) - 199 / 10 / 1
4. Belle de jour (Luis Buñuel) - 166 / 7 / 1
5. The Jungle Book (Wolfgang Reitherman) - 122 / 5 / 1
6. Point Blank ( John Boorman) - 100 / 3 / 0
7. Play Time (Jacques Tati) - 98 / 5 / 0
8. Cool Hand Luke (Stuart Rosenberg) - 84 / 7 / 0
9. The Dirty Dozen (Robert Aldrich) - 67 / 4 / 1
10. In the Heat of the Night (Norman Jewison) - 65 / 4 / 0

Le samouraï lead until the last vote by SuperFurry. Still #2 with only 6 votes (only #1 or #2) is a very good placement. Probably the second highest average score (after Nostalghia) in our movie polls among the movies that got at least 3 votes (I didn't check this - so you can correct me). Jungle Book is the first animated movie in the final of 60s.

Mouchette just missed top 10 with 60 points and unfortunately Jirin's and bonnielaurel's #1 movies didn't get another vote.
