Films of the 2010s: 2017 (2022 Edition)

Post by Schüttelbirne »

Welcome to the 2010s poll! Here we will cover the year of 2017.

The rules:

You can post a list of anywhere between 1 and 20 films (or more, but only 20 will be counted) from the period we're covering. The deciding factor in terms of release dates is the IMDb list and the top 15 of each year will go on to the final top 150 (plus a few bonus films). The deadline is January 15. New rounds will be posted on the 16th and first day of each month.

The points scheme is as follows:
1. 50
2. 45
3. 40
4. 36
5. 32
6. 28
7. 25
8. 22
9. 19
10. 16
11. 14
12. 13
13. 12
14. 11
15. 10
16. 9
17. 8
18. 7
19. 6
20. 5

However, these are the maximum amounts of points. If you want to put certain films on your list but don't want to give them too many points, you can choose to give these less points than in this scheme (but never more) to decrease the impact on the overall results. If you don't specifically state that you want to give (some of) your films fewer points, I will assume the standard scheme.

If you vote for 4 movies or less, this is the adjusted scores:
4 votes
1. Movie 40 p
2. 35 p
3. 30 p
4. 25 p

3 votes
1. Movie 35 p
2. 30 p
3. 25 p

2 votes
1. Movie 30 p
2. 25 p

1 vote
1. Movie 25 p

Just to make clear: I will count Twin Peaks: The Return, but I won't put it on my own list, because I don't even think of it as a mini-series but rather Season 3 of a television show.

Ranking movies is weird for me, because I don't watch them often. I go back to my favorite albums every month, but I'm lucky if I get back to my favorite movies every five years.

1. Get Out
2. Wind River
3. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
4. Blade Runner 2049
5. Spider-Man: Homecoming
6. War for the Planet of the Apes
7. Coco

Ahh man, was sort of hoping Twin Peaks wouldn't make it, but that second 1st place vote pushed it the edge, looks like I'll have to settle for 149/150.

I was glad that Twin Peaks: The Return did make it although I didn't vote for it (it would have been high on my list but first I forgot to vote for it and then I decided not to because it is debatable whether it is a third season of a series or a 18 hour long film. Now we don't need to decide that just rank it depending how good is it (and it sure is good).

But of course you should watch first the two first seasons of the series + Fire Walk with Me movie before this one (and that's a lot to watch but very highly recommendable).

I've actually seen Twin Peaks through the Lynch "leaving" in early season 2, but haven't seen the back half of the season, Fire Walk With Me and The Return and am well aware I need to.

But also part of me rankles when Twin Peaks became the one narrative TV show of the decade that critics deemed to be above the medium. I'd probably feel better if more critics were ranking miniseries or single episodes alongside films. But Lynch is Lynch.

I think part of it is that the official title of the third season of Twin Peaks is Twin Peaks: The Return or Twin Peaks: A Limited Event Series. From my perspective, it seems the creators want it viewed as a miniseries. And I don't think it is the only one getting this specific type of attention - I definitely see O.J.: Made in America and Carlos treated in the same way.

I specified narrative because you're 100% correct on OJ, but it also feels like documentaries blur that line more frequently like When The Leevees Broke and Adam Curtis.

Carlos is another that straddles the line because it's a miniseries that ran at Cannes and had theatrical releases around the world (similar to Mysteries of Lisbon), but whilst Twin Peaks The Return partly ran at Cannes, its not like theatres were doing La Flor type showings of it over multiple days for full 17 hours.

Obviously in an era of streaming and fractured media landscape, "theatrical" means nothing, I just wish people were confident enough to put Fleabag Series 2 on a best films of 2019 list or International Assassin from The Leftovers on a list of best screen things of 2015, rather than keeping it fairly rigidly in line with auteur theory.

And when you finish S02, a much highly rewarding experience would be to wait for 20 - 25 years before watching "The return"
..And then it would be probably your N°1 in the re-re-re-revote around 2050 :p ¤ ¤ ¤

Personnaly, I practically stopped watching and enjoyng movies that much after seeing the Return. They all look to me now flat and basic and corny, and I'm not even a Lynch uberfan (still haven't seen MulhollandDr !ol) 'and had just some vagues memories of s01 and s02 from my childhood. I watched "Fire Walk With" after the Return) Don't believe something better would be done soon

Just watched "One Cut of the Dead," and it is a unique film that I am really sad that only BleuPanda (sorta) voted for. Was 2017 that stacked?

2017 is probably in the running for my favorite year in movies. I think One Cut of the Dead is simply in an unfortunate position due to being underseen and its long release. It is about as word of mouth as movies get, releasing in 2017 but not really taking off in Japan until the following year and then taking another year to release in America. I imagine most of us simply have not seen it yet (and, based on our general tastes, I imagine a few of us who would appreciate it might be overlooking it due to the zombie premise without realizing its depth)
