EOY 1968-1976 and 1979: Rolling Stone (USA) - Albums/Songs of the Year

Post by Live in Phoenix »

The Rolling Stone (USA) - Albums of the Year link leads to http://www.rocklistmusic.co.uk/rolling.htm, which is an excellent site but is sketchy on the earlier years. I didn't even know there WERE earlier years, but I stumbled upon a (discredited) factoid elsewhere that The Pretty Things' Parachute album was the Rolling Stone album of the year for 1970 (or 1971), based on an inaccurate 4/10/75 article. I went ahead and subscribed to the Rolling Stone archives, and found out that Rolling Stone even has 1967 awards.

The 1967 awards are basically cheeky or bizarre (The Rolling Stone Double Barrel Shotgun Award, The Rolling Stone Up Creeque Alley Without A Paddle Award), and these sorts of awards continue for many years. By the 1968 awards, though, they begin to award songs and albums, although the classifications are unusual. (Perhaps a "track" stops being a "track" when it's released as a single.) I have used my rudimentary computer skills to provide screen shots. I've also occasionally included a few awards in this post of some historical interest, though my only real concern was Album(s) and Song(s) of the Year, as Rolling Stone originally presented it all.

The 1972, 1975, and 1979 awards appear to actually rank all the albums (while '69, '70, '71, '73, and '74 may be without a "winner").

The 1972, 1975, and 1979 awards appear to rank all of the songs. '68, '69, and '73 may not have a "winner" because of the separate awards for songs or singles or tracks.
