Hello, I own a book that can also be interpreted as a best of list, I think (its original title is "99 Songs -Eine Gechichte des 20. Jahrhunderts"). It's an Italian protest song originally sung by field workers. There is no specific writer.
There are different recordings, but I believe the author consciously didn't choose a specific one because he talks about the song, not about recordings of it.

That ist correct, the author briefly mentions some recordings but he does not attribute the song to a perticular performer.
