I think this is the best Pfork albums list in years. Swans, GY!BE, Andy Stott, and Burial's high placements remind me of their early-00s lists where more experimental albums ruled. Also I'm glad Kendrick topped Frank Ocean.

Twin Shadow got an 8.6 and didn't even make the Honourable Mentions list - has there ever been an album Pitchfork rated that highly that didn't make their top 50 at the end of the year?

Good list though.

It always seems odd to me when they leave albums like that out. Converges album also got an 8.6 and was left off the list. Here are some other 8.6's that have been left off in the past:

2011: Wolves In the Throne Room, Celestial Lineage
2010: Owen Pallett, Heartland
2009: Various Artists, Dark Was the Night (and this was in a year when only 14 albums got an 8.6 or higher)
2008: Harvey Milk, Life...The Best Game in Town
2007: Twilight Sad, Fourteen Autumns and Thirteen Winters

What really shocked me was the the Godspeed album, which got a 9.3, didn't make the top 10!

It's the classic Kinks curse on these type of polls.

They printed their individual ballots, and it's clear they only asked contributors for their top ten albums. While this method has little impact on what tops the aggregate list, it can have a big impact on which albums end up populating those 50-25 slots...Favoring popular niche albums that a few voters feel very passionate about over solid albums like Twin Shadow's that were clearly not true standouts on the year and make very few voters top ten, but if the ballots were expanded to a top twenty or twenty five would make the back half of a lot of voters lists for it's solidity and probably leap frog a lot of the albums that did make the list.

Have to say though, while I usually have huge annual disagreement with Pitchfork's EOY song lists, the top of their EOY albums lists are always very close to my own. If only they would stop trying to so completely be the anti-Rolling Stone...a couple of those old Dad Rockers, especially Dr. John and Leonard Cohen, put out albums better than most of the records on the back half of this list.

I hadn't realised usually one album rated 8.6 tends to miss out every year of late. But as mentioned the reviews are done by one person and the end of year lists are consensus opinions, which will squeeze some records out, especially more niche ones like Converge (though that was No. 2 on their Best Metal Albums list), Harvey Milk and Wolves in the Throne Room.

Incorrect. They only published the top 10 for space reasons or to not put their writers' tastes completely on show. They were asked to submit full top 50s
