Folk Song U.S.A. (Collected, Adapted and Arranged by John A. and Alan Lomax; 1966)

Post by DDD troll account »

Yesterday I found a list of recommended traditional American folk albums in Appendix III of the book specified above. I believe it's eligible:
Alan Lomax wrote:Selected List of Record Albums

The best way to learn folk singing is to listen to folk singers themselves, or, failing that, to recordings of such singers. We have, therefore, assembled a selected list of albums, commercially available, indicating in our comments which of these are the most desirable. We have not included single records in this list, since that would have made this appendix too cumbersome. We suggest, however, that, if you are interested in building a collection of folk records, you listen to all the "hill-billy" and "race" recordings you can find; they are full of folklore material.
Put yourself on the mailing list of: The Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.; Decca Recording Company (445 Park Ave., New York City); and you will be notified of most of the new albums as they are published. These are the three main sources. If there is no larger store in your vicinity, you may order the commercial albums by mail through the Liberty Music Shop (50th and Madison Avenue, New York City). This list of albums was published in part in the Christmas issue of Vogue, 1946, and is reprinted here by permission.
As for now, I'll only give a list of the albums (without the comments) and link to some helpful web source whenever possible. The list is alphabetical by artist and thus unranked. Titles are given the way they are in the book, not the way they are on record sleeves as found in weblinks:
