I don't quite understand what's so important about Louis Armstrong's version of Mack the Knife. I always heard more about the Ella Fitzgerald version. Naturally it's about time Bobby Darin's version of Mack the Knife is in!

I'm surprised that A Love Supreme wasn't in before. However it is important to note that John Coltrane is now the first person to have two albums in the Recording Registry!

That's the thing I don't really like about the Recording Registry. They only seem to let artists have only one song or album. But thankfully that seems to be changing.

I know right! I literally wrote to the nominations board thing begging to let them preserve The Beatles' Revolver and Bob Dylan's Like a Rolling Stone. Maybe next year they will.

I'm glad they don't let (m)any duplicates to be included to be honest, at least for a while longer. It allows the chance for a decent slice of American audio history to be preserved, not just a collection of recordings by the same popular acts.

And while I get why The Beatles (and other international acts) are on there, I personally disagree with anything not either produced by an American or made in America being included in the list. It's not like America doesn't have a rich, diverse history to choose from without having to resort to OK Computer. It even says right there on the site:

"Each year, the National Recording Registry at the Library of Congress chooses 25 recordings showcasing the range and diversity of American recorded sound heritage in order to increase preservation awareness."

To me that seems pretty clear in it's goals. Do they explain why they allow international acts somewhere? Is there a missing coma? Because it really should be called the International Recording Registry, if I'm not just being a little bit too pedantic.

But, Maschine_Man, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, just to name a couple, were huge influences on the American musical soundscape. They're both pop culture icons in America. Without the iconic recordings of those two, I honestly doubt rock music would be the same.

While the film registry is more stricter, they've included an American-made Hebrew-language film and included British releases such as David Lean's Lawrence of Arabia.

Yeah, this is why I assumed they were included in the list. At the same time, if another country starts a registry like this, will they have to include these acts all over again? America is funding something that the UK really should be in charge of, and it's not like they don't have the resources to do so.

I must admit that I'm slightly confused at to why they didn't include Elvis' version of "Hound Dog" with Big Mama Thornton's as they have done in the past (Rudy Vallee/Bing Crosby for "Brother, Can't You Spare Me a Dime" and Louis Armstrong/Bobby Darin for "Mack the Knife"), especially as it's important concerning racial issues in '50s Americana. (Just watch that Dreamgirls where that songwriter thinks it's an Elvis song through-and-through.)

And Judy Garland's "Over the Rainbow" wasn't inducted the first year? What the fuck were people thinking, leaving it out of the Registry all these years?

Maybe next year Dusty in Memphis and The Immaculate Collection will be included...

Not entirely sure. They can be really weird about which artists get multiple recordings inducted and which cant (only one album each for the Beatles and Bob Dylan, three separate John Coltrane recordings).

It's kind of odd that it took them until this year to include Rock Around the Clock, in the same year they already add Footloose. But I guess that's the nature an charm of the Registry: just trying to add something from every part of recording history. If you take all the entries of all years you get quite an eclectic list.

Actually it's not based if the recording is a single. Many of the recordings aren't even songs. The only criteria is the historical importance for preservation.
