Re: SPIN - The 30 Best ’90s R&B Songs (2017)
No doubt there are some great choices, but there are a few strange choices as well.
-Xscape, “Just Kickin’ It” (1993)
-SWV, “Right Here (Human Nature)” (1992) -> The original was much better and I have no idea why people are so crazy over this remix.
-Boyz II Men, “End of the Road” (1992) -> Good for karaoke but not ultimately bland
-Jodeci, “Forever My Lady” (1991) -> Has SPIN listened to "Feenin'"?
-Janet Jackson, “That’s the Way Love Goes” (1993) -> Janet has so many superior songs so this choice left me confused. "Got It 'Til It's Gone"?, "Anytime, Any Place"?
-Mary J. Blige, “Be Happy” (1994) -> Uhh no. "Real Love" remains supreme.
-Groove Theory, “Tell Me” (1995) -> Good song but not really Top 30 material
-Babyface, “When Can I See You” (1994)
Obvious omissions:
1. Missy Elliott - Beep Me 911 (feat. 702)
2. Nicole Wray - Make It Hot
3. Destiny's Child - Bills Bills Bills / Bug-A-Boo
4. Adina Howard - Freak Like Me
5. Next - Too Close
6. Jade - Don't Walk Away
7. Mariah Carey - Breakdown -> the finest Mariah Carey single ever. Only "We Belong Together" comes close

A few disagreements and agreements:Pauler wrote:No doubt there are some great choices, but there are a few strange choices as well.

SWV, “Right Here (Human Nature)” (1992) - No way the remix kicks the originals ass and I like the original but the Human Nature sample, probably my favorite MJ song, puts it over the top.
Janet Jackson, “That’s the Way Love Goes” (1993) - she does have superior songs but not a superior hit like this song.
Jodeci, “Forever My Lady” (1991) - I'm sure SPIN has but it's not better than this song.
Boyz II Men, “End of the Road” (1992) - Agree that it is bland but it was a record breaking, popular hit song.
I agree with you on the other songs that you felt shouldn't be there especially Xscape, “Just Kickin’ It” (1993). I hated that song when it came out. It's grown on me a little over the years.
Missy Elliott - Beep Me 911 (feat. 702) - is not really an R&B song. It's a good song but doesn't belong on this list.Pauler wrote:

The other ones except for Breakdown you can make a case. Next and Adina Howard a very strong case.

Damn Henrik, that's pretty good. Although I don't remember Massive Attack song that well. I will need to revisit that.Henrik wrote:Personal top 10:

I take back what I said about Beep Me 911, that is an R&B song. What was I thinking? It still wouldn't/shouldn't be on this list though.bootsy wrote:A few disagreements and agreements:Pauler wrote:No doubt there are some great choices, but there are a few strange choices as well.

Agreed. Good song!StevieFan13 wrote:I love Return of the Mack!
I love "End of the Road". One of my favorite 90s ballads.
Re: SPIN - The 30 Best ’90s R&B Songs (2017)
A massive YES to the #1 choice. Good Lord, the grooves on Maxwell's debut album are irresistible. Smooth, funky and downright sexy. As far as conventional slow jams go, I don't think I have heard a better album.Henrik wrote:Personal top 10:

10. TLC - Creep
Also another YES for Kelis and "Caught Out There". How could I forget this fiery tune? I personally prefer "In the Morning" (one of The Neptunes' finest songs) but Kelis does belong in any Best 90's R&B list.
I can see how "Unfinished Sympathy" could fit into this because the vocal performance is very typical of "belting soulful diva" but it's too closely related to the Trip-Hop movement so I don't think it should be on this list.

Two other choices I just remember last night are "Freak Me" by Silk and "Freak'n'You" by Jodeci. Maybe "If I Ever Fall In Love" by Shai too.
