Hit Parader - Top 100 metal albums of all time (1989 & 2005)

Post by Pierre »

Hit Parader was (closed in 2008) a popular music magazine which, according to Wikipedia, switched to being a heavy metal exclusive mag in the 1980s. In 1989 they published a list of the top 100 metal albums of all time, which I managed to find on an Ebay page which features samples from inside the magazine here:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hit-Parader-Mag ... 7675.l2557

I'm always having endless fun looking at those lists dating back from when Def Leppard was considered the biggest thing around, and Ozzy Osbourne's solo output more important than Black Sabbath's. Where it becomes potentially funny is that they re-did a top 100 in 2005. Found it here, there and elsewhere:

The comparison actually shows somewhat they had trouble shedding away their 80s metal heyday. I guess Lita Ford has this effect on some men. Unless it's Bret Michaels. Anyway, here are the lists:

The evolution between both lists is interesting. Where most metal journalists were pretending by 2005 that hair metal never existed and largely replaced it in theirs lists by thrash and death, this publication stuck to it to some extent. That makes for an interesting list, although one probably hated by the younger generation of metalheads.

Edit: Ebay tells me they did another feature in 1994, and one other again in 2008 (this time with 200 albums)... Looks like they couldn't stop pumping these out, actually.

On what planet is Grand Funk considered metal? They’re not even funk! Or grand. They’re pretty terrible.
