Country Music People (UK) - Women of Country: 100 Essential Tracks (2017)

Post by StevieFan13 »

Don't know why the British took a liking to country music (although an interesting article on why rap and country are held to a lower standard by rock purists and casual music buffs popped up recently that I'll share at some point). Nevertheless, I do like the tracks here that I've heard. Coincidence? Or are country music's women more clever after having to deal with all the shit men have thrown at them over the course of country's history and therefore make better music than "trucks, girls, beer, hometown, party"? Stray thoughts:
- Is "Since U Been Gone" really a country song? I mean, I get how "Heartbreak Hotel" and Ray Charles' version of "I Can't Stop Loving You" can be considered country songs, but considering Kelly Clarkson never had much of a country sound and didn't really align herself with country music, that seems like an odd song to include. Not that I'm complaining.
- And as long as we're counting sorta-country songs, where's Beyonce's "Daddy Lessons"? The version without the Dixie Chicks, since it seems to mostly be a one-song-per-artist list.
- Speaking of whom, it speaks volumes that a British country magazine has no qualms about including "Not Ready to Make Nice" when it's practically poison for American country magazines and websites. Not ready to admit it's their best song, more like.

I don't remember - did I ever include this list on any of the undecided list threads? 'Cuz it's probably eligible.
