Camion blanc books volume 2

Post by Pierre »

OK, you know, I hate myself because I'm just too good at searching lists around, or to be more fair with myself, French journalists and music amateurs just produce shitloads of lists and it doesn't help that hard rock/heavy metal critics are also lists aficionados, so guess what happens when the two collide. It happens that for the Camion blanc editor I had forgotten these books from author Thierry Aznar: a three-volume series titled "Hard rock & heavy metal: 40 years of purgatory" which self-proclaimed purpose is to dig out the obscure and secondary classics of the genre. The first book covered the 1970-1989 period, the second the 1990-2009 period, and the third goes up to 2014, but since the author was at it, he just decided to go back and add further albums since 1968. Therefore, this last book goes from 1968 to 2014! To explain this, it must be known that the first two tomes were released together in 2014, while the third was produced later, in 2015 (yeah, that's much later, I know). Whatever, here's the idea from the author: dig out albums outside the hard rock and heavy metal canon, in the author's own words, divided in three categories. Those are: great albums from bands despised by critics; great albums from unknown bands; and forgotten great albums from famous bands. The list is further divided in five levels:

- interesting album (5)
- good album (4)
- very good album (3)
- excellent album (2)
- masterpiece (1)

The numbers in bracket are the equivalents I'll use while typing down the list, for the sake of simplicity and making my life easier. Rules are as follow: one album per act unless exceptional longevity (but I feel like it's actually not much enforced), and no live albums. So, without further ado, here's the stuff. You know the drill.

I should complain because Ted Nugent again, but at least this list features a few more girls than usual (I can't believe it's one of the few in which Pat Benatar shows up...), even if only in small touches, and given its overall second-rate classics nature, I do find it interesting somewhat (remember I'm doing all this to push hair metal so I can annoy AMers  ). Well, mostly second-rate classics. In particular, what is Toxicity doing there? And in recent albums, there's stuff that hardly classifies as hard rock or metal. Modest Mouse? :-|

I'll take interesting-but-flawed over perfect-but-boring any day. Toxicity's probably going to chop suey its way into the top 500 at this point, because I can't think of a single modern rock/metal list that doesn't have it (and a few non-rock/metal lists have it too).

Spin Doctors aren't particularly metal either.

Yeah, I took Modest Mouse because they were the ones that stuck out the most to me, but they certainly aren't the only ones. Fleetwood Mac? Rory Gallagher and other blues acts? The glam rock acts? They certainly are very inclusive when making these lists.

The band I can't even fathom the progress they'll make are Iron Maiden. When I started this insanity (remember I'm not that fan of metal in the first place, although recurrence has got me involved with a few of the albums I've helped when posting these lists), I told to myself that it might be nice to help second-rate classics from the big acts. But now, not only Iron Maiden's already-featured albums, especially The Number of the Beast, might make ridiculous performances, but they might even get four additional albums! :D (Fear of Mind, Somewhere in Time, and even Fear of the Dark and Brave New World!) Also, Scorpions' performance is ridiculous, seriously look at their score in the spreadsheet... Even acts with pretty monolithic discographies might have some shake-up (I mean acts which haven't moved much in terms of new album entries since I discovered AM.net), like, even AC/DC, Aerosmith, Guns N' Roses, Led Zeppelin and Metallica might get new entries, which is something I didn't expect. And Queen, of course... And to think, I know of more hard rock & heavy metal albums lists out there that I didn't find! Maybe the rise won't stop there :D

Thanks Pierre! Do you think that I should use this as a list (anything on this list beats albums not mentioned) or as ratings (albums with a 5 then becomes the "worst")?

Iron Maiden deserve every praise they get.

Well it's a list of second-rate classics, so everything mentioned here isn't supposed to beat, say, The Number of the Beast, Appetite for Destruction or Master of Puppets... The book indeed makes it clear that the albums mentioned are supposed to be complementary to the usually-mentioned classics. Meanwhile, albums with a "5" still are supposed to be worth a shot, they aren't supposed to be frankly poor albums. But I guess the rating idea might be worth it as long as the albums benefit from it. A decision must be taken for the two albums (Boxer's Below the Belt and Shark Island's Law of the Order) that the author mentioned but forgot to rate though.

I agree. And man, did they get some lately :D
