Honorio wrote:It's not a new list, Waits did it in 2005. It was posted on the old acclaimed music Forum some years ago. Anyway it's fantastic, it gives you a perfect indication of why Tom Waits sound like that.
I strongly recommend the comments Tom Waits made about these albums, you can find them in http://www.theguardian.com/music/2005/m ... opandrock1
David Bowie's "Confessions of a Vinyl Junkie" (25 favorite albums)
Honorio wrote:I found another list from a rock star and it's again very interesting. David Bowie published his "Confessions of a Vinyl Junkie" in Vanity Fair in 2003. As expected, Bowie's list covers a lot of ground with many different styles on it (Classical, Folk, Jazz, Blues, Reggae or Psychedelia to name a few). What was not so expected was the fact that he includes many oddities, even downright bizarre albums like the one by Florence Foster Jenkins. And also many obscure choices, I should admit that I never heard more than half of these albums. I strongly recommend you to read Bowie comments, he included some interesting record-buying memories.

The link for the Confessions of a Vinyl Junkie

As an additional list you may be interested in Bowie's 100 favourite books, another fantastic list that he published in 2013 that shows his "wide-ranging love of literature." Bowie's 100 favorite books
All these lists are eligible for AM. It would be great if the lists that Honorio has linked to could be transcribed to this thread.
Any other?

I'll do it, although:

- I think the Elvis Costello one is already included on AM.

- Kurt Cobain's has been posted here:
http://www.acclaimedmusic.net/forums/vi ... f=3&t=4803

- Listology is down, but I found the Thurston Moore list on Wayback Machine.

Of course Costello's list is already included. My bad!

I think it would be neat to include Cobain's list here as well.

The albums list, actually in chronological order except for Pet Sounds and Fishbone which just stick out. However, I don't think it should be eligible, because it derails completely by the end.

The latest issue of Q has two different favorite album lists by famous musicians.

First here are Angel Olsen's picks for The Albums That Changed My Life:
- Alex Cameron, Jumping the Shark (2014)
- Julianna Barwick, Will (2016)
- The Nerves, One Way Ticket (1976; they denote a 2006 reissue but I think that's irrelevant)
- Catherine Ribeiro + Alpes, Paix (1972)
- Men Without Hats, Rhythm of Youth (1982)
- Brian Eno, Here Come the Warm Jets (1974)
- Ivor Cutler, Dandruff (1974)
- Albert Aylor, Goin' Home (1964)

And later on, Mary J. Blige lists her 5 favorite albums:
- Stevie Wonder, Songs in the Key of Life (1976)
- Deniece Williams, This is Niecey (1976)
- DeBarge, All This Love (1982)
- Michael Jackson, Off the Wall (1979)
- Ambrosia, One Eighty (1980)

Hold on, there must be some limitation here, as artists have been asked a zillion times in different magazines about their favorite albums. What I meant is when artists publish a list that is a feature of its own. Can such lists easily be distinguished, or should we have a number of albums/songs criterion?

Given that, I'd say the Angel Olsen list counts but the Mary J. Blige one doesn't. I wouldn't say 30+, but yeah, they should be their own thing and not just a general musicians' poll (like the BBC list you deemed ineligible).

And not just an "album that changed my life" kinda deal, it has to be an actual list. Written, preferably (so Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel's picks for their 5 best songs that they did on Colbert wouldn't count).

So, if Q has done more than one list of "albums that changed my life," I'd count that. But stuff like Rolling Stone's regular feature where artists named 5 of their favorite songs shouldn't count.

But at the same time, I'm not sure whether or not you'd count the Q issue where artists pick one album each that changed their lives (you counted the NME list of albums you must hear before you die that basically had the same conceit).

Carrie Brownstein's made a few of these that I think could probably qualify.

Her 23 favorite punk releases, via New York Magazine (considering Sleater-Kinney is punk, I think it's more than just a genre list): http://rateyourmusic.com/list/Catelyn/c ... _releases/

And her top 10 (plus one) songs of 2010 for NPR: http://www.npr.org/sections/allsongs/20 ... e-for-2010

Here's what I think the rules should be - feel free to veto this, Henrik:
- More than 5 Albums (unless it's a combined list like the NME and Q ones)
- no year-end lists
- has to be written
- can't be ranking of their own albums/songs (unless it's incorporated into the overall list, like Questlove)

While you're sitting on that, here are a few others I found that could probably be eligible:
Dave Mustaine: 10 Albums That Changed My Life (they have a bunch of these on Team Rock)
http://teamrock.com/feature/2016-12-11/ ... ed-my-life
15-10-15-20: "Weird Al" Yankovic (a Pitchfork feature for different significant albums/songs at different points of an artist's life - I'd say we should go with people over 30, because then there'd be more than 5 albums, unless my rule idea doesn't hold water)

I think more than 10 albums/songs and no lists that include their own albums/songs. At least not multiple own songs, so I agree with Pierre that Questlove's album list should not be included.

Billboard: The Top 35 Disco Songs, according to Giorgio Moroder (2016)
http://www.billboard.com/photos/7445749 ... ance-music
35) Rick James - Super Freak
34) Rose Royce - Car Wash
33) Prince - 1999
32) Blondie - Heart of Glass
31) Michael Jackson - Billie Jean
30) Diana Ross - Love Hangover
29) Thelma Houston - Don't Leave Me This Way
28) Amii Stewart - Knock on Wood
27) KC and the Sunshine Band - That's the Way (I Like It)
26) The Pointer Sisters - I'm So Excited
25) Bee Gees - Night Fever
24) Bee Gees - Stayin' Alive
23) Lipps Inc. - Funkytown
22) The Trammps - Disco Inferno
21) Tavares - Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel
20) Gloria Gaynor - Never Can Say Goodbye
19) Barry White - Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe
18) Sister Sledge - We Are Family
17) The O'Jays - Love Train
16) Andrea True Connection - More, More, More
15) Chic - Le Freak
14) Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive
13) Silver Connection - Get Up and Boogie - That's Right
12) Boney M. - Daddy Cool
11) Van McCoy - The Hustle
10) Supermax - Lovemachine
9) Chic - Dance, Dance, Dance
8) Silver Connection - Fly Robin Fly
7) Earth, Wind and Fire feat. The Emotions - Boogie Wonderland
6) Donna Summer - On the Radio
5) Donna Summer - Bad Girls
4) Donna Summer - Hot Stuff
3) Donna Summer - Last Dance
2) Donna Summer - Love to Love You Baby
1) Donna Summer - I Feel Love

So...think he likes Donna Summer? (I mean, he made her career, so I'd figure as much). I don't think we should count producing a song as a song by the artist making the list, so even though Moroder produced "I Feel Love" it should still count. Also, I know it's a genre list, but he also happens to be Giorgio freaking Moroder.

OK, so the George Clinton and R.E.M. lists are out, but the rest is cool?

And that'd also disqualify the Thurston Moore list.

This isn't an original list though. It's a list made from MJ quotes over the years. Not eligible.

What about the other lists with 20+ songs/albums? And is the Thurston Moore list still eligible?

PS. Isn't it interesting that most of these albums were created years ago lol! Music is one of those things that only gets better over time, sometimes

We would have expected some Dr. John and Harry Partch, maybe also Screamin' Jay Hawkins and an audiobook version of the Smithsonian Handbook of Interesting Insects. But, yeah, that's pretty Waitsian.
