This list reflects the author's opinion of what constitutes the 297 essential progressive rock recordings of all time. Rankings were determined based on artistic merit, historical significance, popularity and importance to the genre.

Can't be too down on a list that gives Camel, Gentle Giant, PFM, & Caravan the pre-eminence they deserve, and Hatfield & the North in the top 50 too. He also recognises 'Freehand' as GG's best and SEBTP as Genesis' best. Focus and Strawbs come too low on the list for my taste, while ELP & The Nice are too high. 'Pheadra' & 'Tubular Bells' are too low if he's taking historical significance into account.

Well, there are other aspects that do annoy me, but the low ranking of "Hot Rats" (and the fact it's stuck between Supertramp and Muse, seriously?) was what baffled me the most... Actually, another reason that made me dislike it is the low rankings of krautrock, post-rock and art rock albums the author chose to include, not counting the fact that if such acts as Sigur Rós and Godspeed You! Black Emperor were eligible they deserved more than one entry each... And jazz fusion is apparently eligible but barely represented (where are Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock?).

Also, I do think it's great that Will Romano included Italian and French albums, although if the author was trying to be somewhat international, then I'm missing such masterpieces as Triana's "El patio" or Los Jaivas' "Alturas de Machu Picchu" and their eponymous album. But of course, nobody can know everything about a particular genre.

Just ranking the albums included, I would have () at #2, but I think he is including albums that arguably have some prog rock content and ranking based on their prog rock appeal. Jazz fusion & post-rock albums therefore inevitably rank lowish. I would put Bitches Brew above many of these, but I don't consider it has any place on a prog rock list. Krautrock is a different matter, but this is just one person's opinion not leavened by other voices. Indeed those Muse & Supertramp albums has no place on any 'essential albums' lists.

I think however that this list should be eligible. The foreword does say that the list remains "the author's opinion". The fact that popularity was somewhat taken into account shouldn't disqualify it altogether, as I believe popularity does always play some role in building parts of a list (if only to appeal to a broader audience) even if it's never necessarily stated, unless you're making a list of obscure indie and experimental records. I would simply recommend giving it a lesser weight to make up for the fact that it's specifically claimed in this case.
