✅ NEW Rolling Stone Top 500 Albums of All Time

Post by Harold »

Rolling Stone has rebooted their Top 500 Albums of All Time list - a new special issue has just been released. From a cursory look (all that I've had time for) it looks like they mainly added a bunch of albums from the 2000s and increased the rankings of some of the more recent albums that had already been included (notably, Kid A is now #67 where it had previously been #428 - although OK Computer is still absurdly ranked way down at #162). I may post the new list here over the weekend, unless someone else beats me to it.

A quick note - two albums from the 2010s are included. One, unsurprisingly, is My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy at #353; the other is last year's reissue of the Beach Boys' SMiLE, at #381. First all-time list appearance for each.

Will this be accounted to the lists AM includes or not, like the 2005 update?

This is a more extensive update than the very minimal one they did when the initial list was published in a book. I think this new list should definitely be included.

Harold, where have you seen this new list? If it's online can you link it here? I've tried searching for it myself but I couldn't find it. I did however find some new articles which mentioned the following....

Kanye has 3 new albums added, including "MBDTF" and "The College Dropout". However, "Late Registration" is the highest at 118.
"Funeral" by Arcade Fire is added.
"Back to Black" by Amy Winehouse is added.
"In Rainbows" and "Amnesiac" by Radiohead are added.
"The Black Album" by Jay-Z is added.
"Tha Carter III" by Lil Wayne is added.
"Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" by Arctic Monkeys is added.
Unnamed Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan albums are added.

"Sunflower" by The Beach Boys was dropped out.
"Music" by Madonna was dropped out.
"Changesone" by David Bowie was dropped out.
"Elton John" by Elton John was dropped out.

In total, 30 albums were added and 30 were taken away.

The print version is on the shelves. Again, if the list isn't available online I'd be happy to transcribe and post it over the weekend.

Everything in Nick's post is accurate. The stats page at the back of the magazine notes the artists w/ the highest number of entries:
Bob Dylan - 12 (including Love and Theft and Modern Times)
The Beatles - 10
The Rolling Stones - 10
Bruce Springsteen - 8 (including The Rising)
The Who - 7

The Stone Roses is also a new addition from the last magazine list, I think, although it seems it was added in 2005 when the list was published in book format. So I'm not sure if that counts as a change or not.

Thanks for posting this list, Harold! The original is what started me tracking down these "best of" lists, which eventually led me here.

Quite a jump for The Immaculate Collection (it was at 278 on the initial list). Like a Prayer and Ray of Light rank only slightly lower, while Music drops off.

Rolling Stone overhauls album ranking, Kanye stars

Mike Collett-White Reuters
April 27, 2012

LONDON (Reuters) - Three Kanye West albums have made it on to the latest edition of Rolling Stone magazine's authoritative "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" list, placing him among the greats of popular music.

The new ranking, which combines a 2003 list (updated in 2005) with a later survey of the 2000s, saw two Radiohead records join the elite club, while long-established names including Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan also had albums added.

Rolling Stone has published the list, along with details of the albums and several new recording histories based on first-hand accounts, in "bookazine" format available for $11.99 on newsstands between Friday and July 25 in the United States.

As with any survey that tries to put arguably the greatest rock and roll recordings into a particular order, there was plenty of heated debate among the journalists and editors who came up with the final list.

Much of the hard work had been done, however, with hundreds of reporters, executives and musicians involved in the earlier surveys.

"We had arguments in the office, and I hope those arguments are replicated elsewhere," said Christian Hoard, a senior editor at Rolling Stone, of the selection process.

"These special issues are great sellers," he told Reuters. "But they also turn people on to music they haven't heard, and hopefully start fun arguments too.

"People like to get angry about these 'best' lists. It was really a great deal of fun to make."

WEST THE BIG WINNER

The big beneficiary was U.S. hip-hop star West, who saw 2005 album Late Registration, The College Dropout (2004) and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010) make it to the top 500.

In total, 30 albums were added and 30 taken away, with the casualties including several artists well-represented on the list already and whose "lesser" albums have now been dropped.

The highest entry among recent albums was West's Late Registration at No. 118.

Asked whether the relatively low position of recently released albums reflected a barren period for great rock and pop, Hoard replied:

"My personal opinion is no. Music is as inspirational as it's ever been.

"Things get clearer as the years pass. If you held this poll in 10 years, say, Arcade Fire could be a lot higher and the same could be said of Kanye West. Reputation and time definitely help an album, especially with pollers like ours."

Canadian band Arcade Fire's Funeral is among the 30 additions, as is British act Arctic Monkeys for their 2005 hit Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not.

Radiohead features twice -- for Amnesiac (2001) and In Rainbows (2007), Jay-Z is added for The Black Album (2003), Lil Wayne makes it with Tha Carter III (2008) and the late Amy Winehouse for Back to Black.

Among those dropping out to make way for the additions were The Beach Boys (Sunflower), David Bowie (Changesone), Elton John (Elton John) and Madonna (Music).

The first change to the previous list comes at number 59, leaving the Beatles to dominate the top 10.

The Fab Four feature no less than four times in the first 10; at number one (Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band), three (Revolver), five (Rubber Soul) and 10 (The White Album).

Three acts have 10 albums each on the list -- the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan -- and the oldest album on the list is from 1952 (The Anthology of American Folk Music).

Only 40 albums released since 2000 feature, compared with 187 from the 1970s.

Live At Cook County Jail by BB King wasn't on the original list either. Do they really need 2 live BB King albums?

Kingoftonga, I think one of the subtractions that you missed was "Meet The Beatles" which was originally at number 59 on Rolling Stone's old list. I'm not sure about the other subtraction however....

With some, I think Rolling Stone is cheating a bit and using anthologies to stand in for multiple albums. Cosmo's Factory and Green River have been replaced by CCR's Chronicle. Robert Johnson now has The Complete Recordings in the Top 30, making other entries irrelevant, and The Sun Sessions have been replaced with Sunrise.

The real losers are Roxy Music, Nick Drake, and No Doubt, who each lost two albums with no additions.

I'm glad to see Kanye's 3 best albums here, along with modern classics by Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, Amy Winehouse, Radiohead, Jay-Z, Green Day, Arctic Monkeys, LCD Soundsystem, Wilco, and more. This increase in modern albums definitely gives more credibility to Rolling Stone, a magazine that has always had a strong 60's and 70's bias. Maybe in 20 years we'll see "Funeral", "Is This It", and others in the top 100, along with other modern classics that missed out this time around.

Also, since LCD Soundsystem totally got snubbed when Rolling Stone revised their top 500 songs list it's good to see them here with their best album.

As for subtractions, the only ones I'm really sad about are the Smashing Pumpkins album, the Massive Attack album, and the two Nick Drake albums.

Also, "Reasonable Doubt" is really good and all, but "The Blueprint" and "The Black Album" are Jay-Z's obvious masterpieces.

What happens in cases where there are updates to the original list? For instance, the albums that appeared on the original list, but are removed from future updates? And, also, if rankings for some change dramatically?

Some albums that were ranked pretty high were removed? The Sun Sessions at 11 and now gone? I'm surprised.

JR, as was noted in a previous post, The Sun Sessions has been directly replaced at #11 by Sunrise, which presents a fuller picture of those sessions than the original collection.

Ah, right. I see Robert Johnson actually climbed, just with a different album, and CCR got Chronicle instead of some of the other albums. Fair enough, I suppose.

Updated lists was not common in the past century. The all-time lists from e.g. NME were new lists rather than updates, I think. But it seems to be more and more common and a good way to handle this is necessary. What I plan to do in the next site update is to include two lists; One is the current version and the other is the albums/songs that have been included at some earlier point in time. Albums in the current list will be blanked in the second list so that they are not counted twice. The second list will probably be given some kind of weight deduction. I will do this for RS top 500, the 1001 albums book, WOXY's top 500 modern songs and perhaps some more lists that I've forgotten about.

Why would they replace two CCR albums with a greatest hits compilation?

It also seems strange to think that the highest-ranked album of the 1990s is an Elvis Presley compilation. And why is a compilation of two different Bo Diddley albums included as one entry?

It confuses me to see so many greatest hits albums rising up the list. Not only are there far too many already there, I don't think there should be any there! I counted no less than 40 compilations on the list, 30 of which are in the top half of the list. Think of all the real albums that could be on the Top 500 instead!

1. 11 Sunrise-Elvis Presley
2. 21 The Great Twenty-Eight-Chuck Berry
3. 22 The Complete Recordings-Robert Johnson
4. 38 The Anthology-Muddy Waters
5. 46 Legend-Bob Marley And The Wailers
6. 52 Greatest Hits-Al Green
7. 54 The Birth Of Soul: The Complete Atlantic Rhythm And Blues Recordings-Ray Charles
8. 59 Chronicle-Creedence Clearwater Revival
9. 61 Greatest Hits-Sly And The Family Stone
10. 65 Phil Spector: Back to Mono (1958-1969)-Various Artists
11. 75 Star Time-James Brown
12. 92 20 Golden Greats-Buddy Holly
13. 94 40 Greatest Hits-Hank Williams
14. 107 Portrait Of A Legend 1951-1964 -Sam Cooke
15. 136 Greatest Hits-Elton John
16. 154 Moanin' In The Moonlight-Howlin' Wolf
17. 164 The Very Best of Linda Ronstadt-Linda Ronstadt
18. 178 The Anthology 1961-1977-Curtis Mayfield And The Impressions
19. 179 The Definitive Collection-Abba
20. 184 The Immaculate Collection-Madonna
21. 196 Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era --Various Artists
22. 198 The Best Of-Little Walter
23. 214 Proud Mary: The Best Of Ike And Tina Turner-Ike And Tina Turner
24. 216 Bo Diddley / Go Bo Diddley-Bo Diddley
25. 224 The Neil Diamond Collection-Neil Diamond
26. 232 The Kink Kronikles-Kinks
27. 235 The Ultimate Collection-Patsy Cline
28. 236 Mr Excitement!-Jackie Wilson
29. 238 Howlin' Wolf-Howlin' Wolf
30. 245 The Jerry Lee Lewis Anthology: All Killer No Filler!-Jerry Lee Lewis
31. 278 Anthology of American Folk Music-Harry Smith, ed
32. 311 The Sun Records Collection-Various Artists
33. 360 Singles Going Steady-Buzzcocks
34. 377 The Ultimate Collection (1948-1990)-John Lee Hooker
35. 388 The Indestructible Beat of Soweto-Various Artists
36. 400 Anthology-Temptations
37. 421 The Best of the Girl Groups, Volumes 1 and 2-Various Artists
38. 423 Anthology-Diana Ross And The Supremes
39. 459 Golden Hits-Drifters
40. 478 All Time Greatest Hits-Loretta Lynn

I'm surprised that Arcade Fire only had one album added to the list.

Kid A is ranked way too high (especially when you look at where their other albums are ranked). Just because it was Rolling Stone's #1 album of the 2000s, does that mean it's better than '90s outputs OK Computer (or, in my opinion, The Bends)? And since when was Amnesiac better than In Rainbows?

I was surprised to see the Beach Boys' 2011 edition of Smile make the list, but now it makes me want to hear it!

I'm surprised that Late Registration was Kanye West's top album on the list...would have expected The College Dropout or MBDTF

I am a little surprised that a few more recent "classics" didn't make the cut (Adele's 21, Arcade Fire's The Suburbs and the Black Keys' Brothers instantly come to mind...oh well, I imagine they'll probably make the next update).

They went with that many collections because that was the only way to get many of the classic artists from the 40s/50s onto the list. Some of those though (Elton John, Bob Marley, Abba, etc) those really are bullshit.

On the 500:

After 6+ years, I finally finished listening to this whole list from the bottom to top so I have some thoughts! First off, most of the criticisms I’ve heard about the list are valid, there’s for sure too many compilations, too much dad rock, not nearly enough modern records, and a severe lack of women represented. With that said, it does offer a good primer into some great albums of the 20th Century which is pretty helpful for people like me (younger) that didn’t get to experience them in the first place. On top of that, while the ordering is mostly ridiculous down the list, pretty much everything in the top 100 is pretty essential if unsurprising which was nice since I never found the time to actually listen to most of these.

Some predictions for what they’ll add in what I assume is an inevitable update in the next five years:

1. Bob Dylan - Tempest
2. Bruce Springsteen - Wrecking Ball (RS loves honoring their old artists even if the albums are just good)
3. Frank Ocean - Channel Orange (maybe)
4. Something by Drake
5. Arcade Fire - The Suburbs
6. Kanye West - maybe Yeezus?
7. Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires Of the City
8. Something by Taylor Swift as a concession for modern pop sensibilities
9. Adele - 21
10. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly (maybe Damn. too)
11. Leonard Cohen - You Want It Darker
12. Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool
13. David Bowie - Blackstar
14. Beyoncé - Self Titled OR Lemonade, probably not both
15. Lorde - Melodrama

I’m not even going to get into what they SHOULD be adding but we’ll wait for those disappointments in the next list.

I guess my next project is...going through the AM top 3000?

I just wish they'd redo this list from the bottom up, rather than making slight changes that contradict other lists they've made in recent years. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was their #3 of the 00s, yet only their #490-some odd of all-time. They should start from scratch.
