Robert Christgau's personal lists (2002)

Post by Quirk Out Lee »

http://rockcriticsarchives.com/intervie ... au/05.html

Robert Christgau himself has written his own lists of the best albums from such and such. This is a 2002 article [i think its 2002, judging by how the link at the bottom to 'part 1' of the feature on Christgau dates it as such] and it would appear that Christgau was being surveyed on 1) What are your favorite albums and singles of the '90s? 2) What are your favorite albums of the '60s? 3) What are your all-time favorite jazz records?. Robert answered with some top ten lists [and a few other lists]

These aren't the only lists Robert has written - as his own words in the article state himself, there are the 'A' lists in the consumer's guide books, and I've seen other lists on his website. But from this page:

Top ten 1990s albums (he notes that four of the albums are put together of previously uncompiled old music and "one reconstitutes even more obscure thrift-store stuff," adding "Only the Sonic Youth and Nirvana, plus maybe the heavily sampled Latin Playboys, are "new"/"progressive."")

- Guitar Paradise of East Africa
- Latin Playboys
- Sonic Youth - A Thousand Leaves
- Elmore James - The Sky Is Crying: The History of Elmore James
- The Music in My Head
- DJ Shadow - Endtroducing . . . DJ Shadow
- Nirvana - Nevermind
- Tom Zé - Brazil Classics 4: The Best of Tom Zétom
- Lucinda Williams -Car Wheels on a Gravel Road
- Iris DeMent - My Life

Plus six that didn't make the cut (he says "that doesn't mean others wouldn't come in higher if I made a project out of this")

- Arto Lindsay - Mundo Civilizado
- Public Enemy - Fear of a Black Planet
- Tricky - Maxinquaye
- Fluffy - Black Eye
- The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs
- Oruj Guvenc & Tumata - Ocean of Remembrance

He also writes two lists of top 10 singles of the 1990s, so I guess they combine to make a top 20?

'90s singles

- Fatboy Slim: "The Rockafeller Skank" (Astralwerks)
- Backstreet Boys: "I Want It That Way" (Jive)
- Public Enemy: "Welcome to the Terrordome" (Def Jam)
- Eminem: "My Name Is" (Aftermath/Interscope)
- B-Rock & the Bizz: "MyBabyDaddy" (LaFace)
- Boogie Down Productions: "Love's Gonna Getcha (Material Love)" (Jive)
- L.L. Cool J: "Around the Way Girl" (Def Jam/Columbia)
- Los Del Rio: "Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix)" (RCA)
- FU-Schnickens: "Sum Dum Munkey" (Jive)
- John Prine: "In Spite of Ourselves" (Oh Boy)

The "Second 10"

- Kris Kross: "Jump" (Ruffhouse/Columbia)
- Cher: "Believe" (Warner Bros.)
- Fugees: "Fugee La La" (Ruffhouse/Columbia)
- Beck: "Loser" (DGC)
- Geto Boys: "Mind Playing Tricks on Me" (Rap-a-Lot)
- Coolio: "Gangsta's Paradise" (Tommy Boy)
- Puff Daddy & the Family: "I'll Be Missing You" (Bad Boy)
- R.E.M.: "Losing My Religion" (Warner Bros.)
- MC Hammer: "U Can't Touch This" (Capitol)
- MC Lyte: "Ruffneck" (First Priority)

Top ten 1960s albums (In order, but with no artist repetitions and no jazz, as he thought that would be too hard)

1. The Beatles' Second Album (Capitol)
2. The Velvet Underground (Verve)
3. The Shirelles' Greatest Hits (Scepter)
4. The Rolling Stones: Aftermath (or maybe Let It Bleed) (London)
5. Dusty Springfield: Dusty in Memphis (Atlantic)
6. Otis Redding: The Immortal Otis Redding (Atco)
7. The Beach Boys: Wild Honey (Capitol)
8. Bob Dylan: Highway 61 Revisited (Columbia)
9. The Flying Burrito Brothers: The Gilded Palace of Sin (A&M)
10. The Marvelettes' Greatest Hits (Tamla)

Top 10 jazz albums

- Thelonious Monk: Misterioso (live at the Five Spot)
- Duke Ellington: Flaming Youth
- Any decent Charlie Parker Dial comp.
- Louis Armstrong's Portrait of the Artist.
- Louis Armstrong's 16 Most Requested Songs if that counts (really a pop record I suppose).
- Miles Davis: Kind of Blue
- Miles Davis: Jack Johnson
- Ornette Coleman: Of Human Feeling
- Thelonious Monk: Brilliant Corners
- Sonny Rollins: Silver City

2. The Velvet Underground (Verve)
The 1967 or the 1969 album? Probably their debut album, the 1969 self-titled album was never released behind Verve Records in the 1960s.
