Rock'n'Folk 555 Albums (FR)

Postby Nassim » Thu Dec 11, 2014 9:03 pm

Hello,

I saw today Rock'n'folk released a special issue with a list of 555 albums from 1954 to 2014.
Any Frenchy planning on buying it ? (I'm not a big fan of this magazine but it's still the most read "music only" French magazine so it should be included)

I usually think that Rock'n'Folk lists are pretty weak, but I have to admit they've done far worst than this one, although as usual the list becomes a bit bizarre when you reach the most recent releases ("The Endless River" is the ultimate entry, for instance).

Also, someone should check if it's merely an update of their two former all-time lists or if this one is genuinely different.

Is someone going to write it down, so I can add it to the list of French lists?

Quite the coincidence that there is a full page advertisement for "The Endless River" on page 10 and that the album was included on the list. . .

In the end, I wrote it all down myself... However, since the preview's text is undecipherable and I used the album pictures to deduce the entries, a double-check from someone who owns the paper version would be welcome, because we never know if Rock & Folk did not make an error with one of the album covers.

I can't even imagine the efforts it took for Rock & Folk to include Behaviour, Kid A and LCD Soundsystem in their list.

Re: Rock'n'Folk 555 Albums (FR)

A quick note: I briefly checked the magazine in a library and I can confirm that Rock'n'Folk considers this list an update of their previous all-time 1999 list, which they claim was itself an update of their first 1995 list, if it's of any importance for Henrik's statistical calculations.

I didn't have time to check the entire list though, so I signal that a double-check would still be welcome.

I'll see how I will handle this list then, but it is definitely eligible. Thanks Pierre!

I compared this list with the '99 version, and there are lots of differences. It seems like a new list to me. A completely revised version, just like any new list from NME and the likes.

I only have a few memories of the first two all-time lists, but from what I remember, I agree with you. Actually, that's unsurprising, I guess they do not stick as much to an influential "first version" template like Rolling Stone does, even more so since the 1995 list was actually not well-received (hence the original update after only four years). It's just the Rock'n'Folk staff who refers to it as the third "update" of their list in the introduction of this one. The decision is yours, Henrik.

That's correct Henrik...Not only is it different from their two previous lists but I found the 50's section larger than in the other editions. 13 albums. Less compilations in general. I read the introduction and Philippe Manoeuvre explains that he and his partner Basile Farkas first came up with a list of essential albums, the first dealing with pre 1990 items and the latter with post 1990 selections. End of August the staff all met and gave each their 20 records of all time. They reshuffled the list and after long debates they came up with a list of 500. Finally, after a last addition from one of their collaborators, they established the total to 555 (which infuriated Hervé Bourhis on his FB claiming by reason that they got heavily inspired by his site). I was very happy to get a copy on this issue because they wrote brand new articles with very interesting journalists! If you need any info, please feel free to ask Henrik! :music-guitarred:
