✅ 3FM: 3 voor 12 312 Essentials (The Netherlands)

Post by Rob »

Up till last September Dutch radio station 3FM broadcasted a list of greatest songs of all time, by revealing and playing one song each evening just before midnight. The selections were made by the team behind the show "3 voor 12". Since this is another canonical list it could probably be included on AM. It only includes one song for each act and is in no particular order.

Sadly, they only posted a full overview of the list on Spotify and because some of the acts aren't on there the list is incomplete. I only heard a few of the broadcasts, but during the last they apologized for the incomplete list, with the comment that people shouldn't get upset if they miss Led Zeppelin (now on Spotify, but not in September), AC/DC, Rammstein and John Lennon, because they're just not on Spotify, but are part of the list. Too bad they didn't proceed with telling which songs they selected at the time for these acts, although I've actually heard the broadcasts of the ones with AC/DC and Lennon and now that the inclusions are respectively Highway to Hell and Imagine. To give the Spotify list still 312 songs they added a few songs by acts that weren't in the original list, but were good enough to replace the songs missing on Spotify. I've also noticed that when I now check the list on Spotify the playlist only includes 307, while at the time I saw 309. Why this is, I don't know. Maybe has something to do with songs being removed of Spotfy due to some rights issues. Lastly, the song of the Beatles is actually included on Spotify, but through a version of a cover.

So the list I give here is sadly incomplete and gives a weird overview of the actual list. I got 311 songs, but not the one by Led Zeppelin and Rammstein and with their placeholders. I don't know what songs they used as filler, although personally I don't think it matters as the radio DJ admitted they would be the next choices for the list anyway. I send an e-mail to the radio station with the question about the chosen songs by Led Zeppelin and Rammstein, but never received an answer. The question is, does it matter for inclusion on AM that the list is missing a few songs?

Here it is, in alphabettical order:

It's a suprisingly good list, to be honest, especially compared to other radio lists I posted earlier. Of course, there are some strange omissions (Oasis, Van Morrison, Elton John,Wilco and Kanye West for example) and you could complain about the absence of most jazz and world music. Also, Dutch music is included in a weird way, with an emphasis on dance, hip-hop and alternative stuff, but without more important or iconic acts like Herman Brood, Focus, Boudewijn de Groot, Ramses Shaffy, Anouk, Marco Borsato and Blof. As balanced as the overall list is, as imbalanced is the Dutch part of it. Not that most people on AM will notice, of course ;)

Ahhh!

Thanks Rob, but I'm afraid I won't include the list as long as it is incomplete. Perhaps the full list will be revealed somewhere, at some point?

Since this part of the program ended in September I see little hope for that. Too bad they didn't just post a normal overview of the list on their site.

I was wrong apperantly, because yesterday they added two songs to the Spotify playlist: Oasis' Wonderwall and Led Zeppelins Stairway to Heaven, both of wich wheren't available in The Netherlands on Spotify at the time the list was completed. So they do update this.

Also, I wondered before why I came to only 311 at the time, but now I notice N.W.A. is also there with Straight Outta Compton. Now it's only a matter of finding out what Rammstein song they used and what the placeholders were.

I found this thread again and I am apparently taking the AM inclusions more lightly now than in 2014. Not including this list because there is a missing Rammstein song seems harsh. It's time to add it.

I opened the playlist just now and it says there are actually 314 songs in it, though none of them are by Rammstein (who are, for the record, on Spotify US). Should we do anything more with this list?

That's odd, because when I open the list it now has only 302 songs! No Rammstein, although in the meantime they have been added to Dutch Spotify too. Since the original list is from 2014 I doubt they still update the playlist.
