I remember Burial almost being #1 two years in a row too several years ago.

That Holter album is a really safe pick, especially for the Wire, which is not to say that I dislike it. This is usually my favorite EOY source because it tends to feature lots of stuff that I haven't heard, but this year it seems a little more generic in that there's not as much that I haven't heard about elsewhere. I would have liked to have seen more hip hop since the Wire is one of the few (if not only) British mags to pay anything more than token attention to it. Nice to see Tim Hecker and DJ Rashad (not to mention Rashad Becker) place highly though.

Agreed, surprisingly safe. Stellar OM topped Juno's and Special Request has been featured in plenty of places, mind.

I do love that Julia Holter is number 1. Loud City Song has been criminally underrated in end of year polls this year.

This is a great list, my favorite Wire list of the past few years. Especially with Holter at the top after two straight years that I feel they misfired with James Ferraro and Laurel Halo. The presence of more albums I've heard in this year's list actually makes me more interested in the albums I haven't heard.

Very much a great choice and quite unexpected too. I don't know what's more surprising - that considering it's initial praises, 'Loud City Song' isn't higher up in other EoY lists, or that out of all the music critics so far it is the Wire that has ranked it up the top.
