Not around here it isn't. All the lists are organized by year, and decade, etc...and the standard is when it was released anywhere in the world. If Henrik is gonna incorporate your listings into AM it'll be a lot of work for him to check up on the correct years of anything you have listed that is not already listed here.

Goodnight Irene (July 8, 1950) - The Weavers with Gordon Jenkins’ Orchestra
Is the Leadbelly version also included, or do you think that this version is better?
I Want to Hold Your Hand (Jan. 18, 1964) - The Beatles
Why do you consider the date when Americans started hearing the record to take precedence over when the rest of the world started hearing the song (in 1963)?

Steve, why does the date that the reissue single made the American charts take precedent over the date (12-27-67) that the original single entered the UK charts on the way to the top 20 over there? Not only was the song a big hit single in the UK in late 67/early 68, but the song was the lead track on an album that got to #3 on the Billboard album chart in 1968.

Aww... Bruce wants his tastes/info to be used as source for Steve's book. Well, nobody can say you're not ambitious. But, you know... let the author decides how to write his book, Bruce. If not, write your own book. In that case there will be some internet troll to criticize what you write. And who knows, maybe you will make a friend.

Moving on, the lists are great, Steve! It is evident that there is much work behind your book. I look forward to the rest.

Where did this chart?

It's not in the "Pop Memories" book that you worked on.

Steve, I hope you haven't forgotten to post playlists 5-10. I am definitely eager to see (and add to AM) the rest of the playlists, if you had any doubts about that.

Thanks in advance!

I'd like to let the Acclaimed Music folks know that I will be going to New York to appear on legendary rock critic Dave Marsh's Sirius-XM program "Kick Out the Jams" in May. Dave is a huge fan of my book, which is a thrill for me, since I regard him as the foremost rock critic/author of the past 40 years (alongside Greil Marcus and Peter Guralnick). Of course, his book "The Heart of Rock and Soul" was a big inspiration for me. When my book was nearing completion, I sent him some sample entries, and requested permission to quote from his work (with careful attributions, of course). He not only graciously granted permission, but, based on the samples, asked me if I'd like to be on his show. A few days ago, we finalized arrangements.

"The Encyclopedia of Great Popular Song Recordings" has received glowing reviews in several academic journals, but certainly appearing on Dave's show will expose the book to a much larger audience. Dave is now in the process of making some changes in his show--up to now it's been broadcast live, but will henceforth be pre-recorded, although all interviews will air unedited. Once the revised setup is sorted out over the next few weeks, we'll set the specific date, and I will pass that information along to Acclaimed Music.

To answer Bruce's question: The "Singin' In the Rain' chart debut date refers not to the song, but to the soundtrack album, which spent a staggering (and no doubt frustrating) 11 weeks at #2 in Billboard.

Bruce, I really love your Digital Dream Door list, which was indeed one of the many sources I used. I particularly appreciate the fact that it gives proper representation to classics of the pre-rock era.

91 of your top 100 selections are featured in my book. The exceptions are #15 (My Way), #28 (Celebration), #45 (Caruso), #54 (Rock-a-Bye Your Baby), #64 (Unforgettable), #68 (Swinging on a Star), #85 (Where Did Our Love Go), #88 (Please, Please, Please), and #92 (You Always Hurt the One You Love). Roughly seven or eight of these songs are already set to be in the next volume of the encyclopedia. Under normal circumstances, the Caruso selection would be outside my boundaries, but I had already decided to make an exception for him; even though it's an operatic aria, it had such a huge impact on the popular recording industry at the time that it's worthy of inclusion.

The new book should be completed by the fall of next year. It'll be the same format as the current book--slightly over 1,000 great song recordings from 1890 to today, from all pop song genres, divided into 10 chapters (Playlists 11 through 20)--but this time they'll be squeezed into one book. As before, both Acclaimed Music and Digital Dream Door are among the many sources that I'm taking into consideration, although all filtered through my own perspective. It will be published by Rowman & Littlefield in 2016.

No "My Way?"

The Caruso record pretty much MADE the record industry. There was no radio or any other way to hear Caruso back then unless you saw him live, which most people could not do. Reportedly millions of people around the world bought record players just so they could hear the Great Caruso.

Steve, do you have any idea of when you will be able to add the rest of your lists? I really would like to use them all for the next update in June.

Falling Slowly (May 22, 2007) - Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova

Just in case there is any confusion, this song is already on AM under the artist name "The Swell Season", though it is the same artist.

Thanks again, Kingoftonga!

"I Heard It Through the Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye is listed both in playlist 1 and playlist 8. Should the second entry be Gladys Knight & The Pips' version?

I think there was another duplicate, but I have forgotten what it was. :(

"Bridge Over Troubled Water", by Simon & Garfunkel, listed both in playlist 1 and 7.

Looking through the index on Amazon, I can tell that Henrik is correct about the version of "Grapevine" in playlist 8. Meanwhile, in playlist 7, the version of "Bridge" is by Aretha Franklin.

Thanks very much to Kingoftonga for posting the remaining Playlists in my book. And thanks to Henrik for noting that the Playlist 7 version of "Bridge" is by Aretha, and the Playlist 8 version of "Grapevine" is by Gladys and the Pips. My apologies for not checking back in here until now. I've been busy working on the next edition of the encyclopedia, and also in making preparations for the New York trip on which I'll be interviewed by Dave Marsh. The hour-long interview will be on June 3, and will be aired on his Sirius-XM program shortly thereafter. We'll talk about what led up to the book, and play and discuss several songs that are featured. I've suggested that we do one song from each of several different genres (jazz, blues, country, world music, gospel) and several different decades, with a particular focus on some songs that are a little off the beaten path and which have interesting backstories. I'm looking forward to it.

I had a blast earlier this week in New York taping rock critic Dave Marsh's Sirius-XM show "Kick Out the Jams." Dave loves my book "The Encyclopedia of Great Popular Song Recordings," and that enthusiasm comes across in the interview. The initial airing is Sunday morning on Channel 28 (the Spectrum) from 10 AM to 12 noon; it will also air again later in the week. My segment takes up the entire second hour. After the show we went out for dinner; he is just as cool a guy as any rock fan who's read his work the past 40 years would have imagined. Dave has agreed to write the introduction to my next volume of the encyclopedia, and will also provide me with some editorial feedback on song essays in the pop/rock/soul areas. He also extended an open invitation to return to the show, which I'm looking forward to doing. A terrific experience.

The second encyclopedia is set to be released April 15. If the update isn't ready by then, I'd suggest using this as a cutoff date.

This is so cool! The exhaustive research is overwhelming. Can't wait to give this a look! (though, forgive me, I'm really hoping a Smiths song shows up in the next volume).

So it looks like it's out. Amazon still lists it as unreleased, so I'm hoping they'll give us a "Look Inside" soon.
