FACT Magazine: 100 Best Albums of the 1980s

Postby Jeff » Sun Jul 14, 2013 3:22 am

Fact Magazine did a top 100 albums list covering the '80s back in June. I liked their '90s list and this one is similar in that it is great for discovering new or overlooked albums from the decade. Manuel Göttsching and Kate Bush in the top 5 of the decade? Kraftwerk in the top 10? Mr. Fingers makes the top 20? I love it!

FACT isn't very big on pop-oriented music, I gather? Thriller doesn't even appear. :D Closest there is are Eurythmics and Prince.

COCTEAU TWINS' HEAD OVER HEELS :) I knew that album was more influencial than people gave it credit for. This just proves my point. First album to ever fully incorporate DREAMPOP into their sound which has become a blueprint for numerous bands not just of the dreampop or shoegaze genre. Like I said I honestly feel if Robin Guthrie had all the kind of control Kevin Shields has in MBV they would have gotten all the credit they DESERVED but because it is equal parts Liz as it is Robin they're not gonna name a woman as an influencial figure in such a groundbreaking genre. Patti Smith is called the QUEEN OF PUNK NOT PROTO PUNK but actual punk rock. She predated the Ramones but they're not gonna call her full on punk rock. NOT a female songwriter. She'd be considered the first punk rock artist of all time. That somehow doesn't make punk look as edgy and rebellious as they want it to look so they clump her with all the PROTO punk bands.
