To clarify, the contents of the list are the top 100 songs specfically released by the Motown Record Label (and its sublabels), not songs in the genre nicknamed "Motown Sound" (although there's going to be overlap, of course).

To clarify, the contents of the list are the top 100 songs specfically released by the Motown Record Label (and its sublabels), not songs in the genre nicknamed "Motown Sound" (although there's going to be overlap, of course).
As always with this kind of lists from Rolling Stone
I agree with like 60% of the list but another part is just a complete mystery for me

I'm not well versed enough in Motown to form a solid opinion on this list, but comparing this with the current AM rankings and Rolling Stone's previous 500 greatest songs list, there are some interesting things here.

What surprises me the most is probably that "What's Going On" isn't #1, especially considering its themes and it generally being ranked as one of the best songs ever made (#4 in RS's 2010 song list, and #8 on AM). I also find "Heat Wave" over "Dancing in the Street" a little weird.
