Louder Sound Top 200 (-20) albums of the 1980s (2018)

Postby Pierre » Wed Nov 07, 2018 3:00 pm

The catchy title is just a way of putting it in parallel with the Pitchfork list of the same name from a few months ago to catch the eye of the unsuspecting AMer. Actually, it's just the aggregation of a series of 20 best albums per year Louder Sound (ex-Team Rock, aka Classic Rock, Metal Hammer & Prog) has put out over the course of the last few months. I've been waiting three weeks for the last one for 1989 to come out, and it never did (hence the -20 in the title of this thread). Since I doubt it was cancelled just before the last top 20, and as I doubt even more that Louder Sound gives a shit about whether the initiative was well-received from their readers or not, my best guess is that it's been moved to 2019 as a way to celebrate a decade anniversary of sort. Keep your eyes peeled guys, because that's the last time I post here on the forum; I won't monitor any lists from this day on.

Some personal observations: although they're still sticking to the hyper-classics, I find it interesting how Louder Sound are adding so many college rock outings to their lists. I wonder if they're trying to cater to a crowd that has been disappointed by the increasing focus of Pitchfork on pop music, funk and hip-hop. That might be a glimpse of your future, you college rock fans: you will have to search for your R.E.M. and Smiths reviews alongside those of Ratt and Van Halen.

As long as they remembered the Smiths, I’m satisfied.
Music is a world within itself, with a language we all understand - Sir Duke (1976)
