Camion Blanc third batch (Jérôme Alberola books + others) (2010-2016)

Well, I did it again... I have to stop roaming the websites for Camion Blanc Editions and Tsunami Edizioni as I always dig some new lists. Here are three from Jérôme Alberola in his "Anthology" series, after the hard rock anthology, here are three others he did for prog rock, girls music and "extremism in modern music". While the hard rock anthology was pretty clearly structured, those have different, more vague structures in my opinion, which made it a bit difficult at first to get them. Aside from the Jérôme Alberola, there are also two other lists, one for Christian Metal and a very short one for Ambient.

Prog rock anthology: Travels in elsewhere (Jérôme Alberola, 2010)
http://www.camionblanc.com/detail-livre ... rs-272.php

The book that followed the hard rock anthology, and the one which structure is closest to the former. However, he ditched the distinction between primary and secondary entries, instead choosing to make a list structured as "proto-prog", "pioneers" - Marillion (as the author was obsessed with Iron Maiden for hard rock, he's obsessed with Marillion for prog) - "heirs" - "prog metal", plus an additional list as "and if we really had to only keep 50" (with a double entry, so 51, and which excludes prog metal because they're supposed to be summed up to the very best already). I'll therefore mark these 51 as primary entries with a note in brackets, while the prog metal entries must be understood as being primary entries already. As a refreshing approach, the author actually thinks that progheads obsession with the 70s classic era is excessive attachment and he seems to like the "heirs" era more (his "heirs" definition being lenient, as he also puts there albums from veteran acts). I guess that's because his musical upbringing was into hard rock and metal initially.

Beauties and beasts: anthology of feminine rock, from soul to heavy metal (Jérôme Alberola, 2012)
http://www.camionblanc.com/detail-livre ... al-379.php

For this one, Alberola took a much more scholar approach and therefore decided to talk extensively of the artists and the evolution of women's contributions to music, while the list part is much, much shorter. He also decided to apply a one-album-per-artist rule (except for the same double entry as in the previous book!), so he included an amount of compilations to make up for it. The book is therefore pretty interesting for the knowledge displayed (although there's a little amount of passive sexism that crept its way in) but frustrating from a list compiling standpoint. Well, that's always some points taken for the girls. There are several oddball choices in there, the Madonna entry for instance. Also, Rihanna, Aaliyah or Kelis are there, but not Beyoncé! At least that makes for a singular approach. And it's very recent music-oriented.

Third book:

Pushin' the limits: anthology of extremism and transgression in modern music (Jérôme Alberola, 2016)
http://www.camionblanc.com/detail-livre ... ne-831.php

Biggest list of the bunch. The concept is a tad dubious as it is supposed to be a list of albums that crossed boundaries and explored uncharted territory (with some singles and songs, mostly at the very beginning). Although a featured chronology at the beginning of some innovations and transgressiveness goes back to 1919, the list of featured recordings only start in the 1950s. In reality, I find that the concept is mostly an excuse to once again go through prog and heavy metal (he recycles a number of entries from his previous books, not a majority, but enough to be noteworthy). In particular, no jazz, virtually no glam rock, not enough gangsta hip-hop (but a weirder and more interesting approach to hip-hop afterwards)... I think Alberola's concept is less accurately defined than it was for his other lists here. Although weird and somewhat unpredictable, it's probably the list with the roughest edges of the three. I don't find it that interesting once heavy metal kicks in, apart from some leftfield stuff.

Important note: I substracted one album from the list because it's an overtly nazi propaganda work that the author only added for the sake of showing a landscape as complete as possible of extreme music. But there are limits to my neutrality.

Fourth book

White Metal, noise for the Man on the Cross (Esychia Pneuma, 2014)
http://www.camionblanc.com/detail-livre ... ix-531.php

Here's one more from another author called Esychia Pneuma, about a comparatively less covered subgenre of heavy metal: Christian Metal (here titled White Metal). As the author claims, having non-Satanistic lyrics in heavy metal is a difficult position to hold. The section "Anthology" in the book covers what he believes are the best Christian Metal albums out there, biased toward recent years, it seems.

http://www.camionblanc.com/detail-livre ... es-497.php

Although the book itself is thorough, the "Selective discography" section is very short and relegated in appendices. Oh well, that'll still be a few precious points.

Re: Camion Blanc third batch (Jérôme Alberola books) (2010-2016)

Interesting lists for sure. My dad would love the first one - big Marillion fan.

As much as I enjoy seeing women in music receive more of a focus, I'm always annoyed that it's about just "music," which is very broad. I'm more interested in specific genres and women's contributions to them (punk, R&B, hip-hop, folk, even country).

And as for the last one, it's an interesting concept, but I have a slight feeling in the pit of my gut that I'd dislike a lot of the albums they list. It's a little like the list I made, except a tad broader in focus (though there's a lot of overlap).
Music is a world within itself, with a language we all understand - Sir Duke (1976)

The lists are interesting but the unusual approaches certainly make for some frustration. Progheads used to the usual 70s love will probably raise eyebrows at being showered with Marillion, IQ and Pendragon albums while some 70s giants only have a few albums (ELP, Gentle Giant and Yes in particular). For the second one, it's true that although the focus is generally more on recent acts, the usual critical darlings are mostly avoided. Sleater-Kinney, but also Beyoncé, Joanna Newsom, St. Vincent... Weird results. And for the third one, it's way too thrash, death and black metal oriented (although there could be endless discussions over why the concept naturally favours such works), and there was even a nazi metal album in there (which I deleted as I mentioned above)! Still glad to see Captain Beefheart, Zappa, krautrock and Company Flow in there, among others, and the bizarre hip-hop choices are interesting.

To sum it up, overall I have mixed feelings about these lists.
