How come the needle drop isn’t included? I’m not a Fantano fanatic but it seems like he definitely is a respected voice in music criticism.

It's not eligible according the rules. But I think in this case Henrik should be more flexible because a list of such a consistent and influential critic source along the decade should not be set aside.

I really didn't think 2016 was all that special of a year, but apparently the critics disagree. 4 of the top 10 albums on the spreadsheet are from that year.

Also, it's quite funny how the 2017 albums are faring. Many of the top 10 albums of 2017 on AM are doing quite poor on the EOD lists. It's probably not due to an anti-recency bias (which is what's most likely dragging the 2019 albums down), as 2007 albums did great on the 2000s EOD lists. Instead, it's probably due to the fact that many of the artists in the top 10 had released even higher acclaimed albums this decade, and critics are just defaulting to the more acclaimed album.

Anyway, here's the top 10 albums of 2017 on AM, and their position on the EOD spreadsheet in parentheses. Some real interesting stuff here...

1. Kendrick Lamar- DAMN (#19)
2. LCD Soundsystem- American Dream (#776)
3. Lorde- Melodrama (#14)
4. St. Vincent- MASSEDUCTION (#273)
5. The War on Drugs- A Deeper Understanding (#596)
6. Vince Staples- Big Fish Theory (#177)
7. The National- Sleep Well Beast (#938)
8. SZA- Ctrl (#28)
9. King Krule- The Ooz (#119)
10. Slowdive- Slowdive (#154)

On the other hand...

11. Mount Eerie- A Crow Looked at Me (#45)
13. Arca- Arca (#63)
21. Tyler, The Creator- Flower Boy (#87)
17. Fever Ray- Plunge (#96)

For me, 2016 was the top year for albums. The worst might be 2015, just because it's the only year of the decade where I don't have a solid top 10...

Pretty funny you say that, as 2015 was a great year in music for me. If I had to take a rough stab at ranking the years in music, it’d probably go something like...

1. 2010
2. 2013
3. 2015
4. 2012
5. 2018
6. 2011
7. 2014
8. 2016
9. 2017
10. 2019

We were all talking about ranking years, so I used the current spreadsheets in order to rank them based on current albums and songs. I took the Top 100 from each category, and used the formula for the AM Artists Ranking List and treated each year as an artist. Here are the results:
Song Rankings (Points)
01 | 2010 (4.33)
02 | 2012 (4.20)
03 | 2016 (3.94)
04 | 2015 (3.70)
05 | 2011 (3.63)
06 | 2013 (2.51)
07 | 2018 (1.89)
08 | 2014 (1.88)
09 | 2017 (1.47)
10 | 2019 (0.81)

Album Rankings (Points)
01 | 2016 (4.99)
02 | 2015 (4.34)
03 | 2010 (4.31)
04 | 2013 (3.48)
05 | 2012 (3.27)
06 | 2014 (2.23)
07 | 2011 (2.20)
08 | 2017 (1.88)
09 | 2018 (1.32)
10 | 2019 (0.36)

Overall Rankings (Points)
01 | 2016 (8.93)
02 | 2010 (8.64)
03 | 2015 (8.04)
04 | 2012 (7.47)
05 | 2013 (5.99)
06 | 2011 (5.83)
07 | 2014 (4.10)
08 | 2017 (3.35)
09 | 2018 (3.21)
10 | 2019 (1.18)

This is pretty striking. Henrik, I'm curious what your plans are to counteract 2019 getting obviously shortchanged on these lists. Did a similar thing happen with 2009?

More looks like a bias against the list three years of the decade together, not just 2019, though that does get a much more severe treatment.

This is a good reason for publications to wait until after the decade has officially ended before releasing an EOD list. Think of how many EOD lists came out before albums like Ghosteen, Magdalene, and All Mirrors were even released.

Sorry - I didn't think about the need to forward anything. When I have a chance, I'll reply to your message and send you Henrik's master spreadsheet; I'll copy Henrik as well.

Thanks for offering to take this on. I just got a little burned out, and even though I am now home for the foreseeable future I can't quite get back into the mindset to resume working on it.

Looks like some of the more remarkable "drops", if you will, are well-received works by consistent artists, but not necessarily the standout works of any of their discographies. From 2018, it looks like "Honey" by Robyn and "7" by Beach House have had a similar shift.

Another trend is that artists with mainstream popularity did better than artists that are popular in the music community with no mainstream relevance. This isn't universally true across all of the risers and fallers, but I don't think it's a coincidence that Rihanna, Drake, Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Beyonce were big risers while some of the above albums fell.

Looking at your list of risers, Lana Del Rey really stands out as someone who is both beloved by the music community and with mainstream relevance, though it feels as though her music community love is a result of re-evaluations of her past music following NFR!

Del Rey's pre-NFR! albums always had these kinds of re-evaluations, though - if you go back and look, her albums tended to be met with critical indifference at best upon their initial release (especially Born to Die) and then ended up scoring high on EOY lists (again, especially the debut). By the time Norman Fucking Rockwell! was released, Del Rey had finally achieved the kind of status where the album's quality simply couldn't be denied or dismissed - no re-evaluation necessary. (Although you're undoubtedly right that a lot of people who only really began seriously listening to her with NFR! have been going back into her catalog and realizing, "Hey, she was this good all along!")

Awesome job, Kingoftonga!
Love that IDLES is moving up in the world, and that Carrie & Lowell is now beating A Seat at the Table!

Does MBDTF have a chance of getting close to Funeral - Arcade Fire after the update? (Or TPAB)

Given general reaction I assume that's only my problem, but for me scores and ranks don't show, they show that there is division by 0; I tried MS Office 2007 and latest LibreOffice.

Can anyone please PM me about this?

MeHaceRuido (Intl) was included but MeHaceRudio (Spanish language albums) should be included (like in the EOY lists)

Post by Holden »

Interesting tidbit here, the top ten only represent FOUR of the ten years of the decade:
2010
Kanye West | My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Arcade Fire | The Suburbs
2012
Frank Ocean | Channel Orange
Kendrick Lamar | good kid, m.A.A.d city
2015
Kendrick Lamar | To Pimp a Butterfly
Sufjan Stevens | Carrie & Lowell
2016
David Bowie | Blackstar
Frank Ocean | Blonde
Beyoncé | Lemonade
Solange | A Seat at the Table

Also, while this is obviously not my personal top ten list (I’d probably only keep Sufjan myself), I do understand all of these picks, aside from Blonde and A Seat at the Table, which, while they are great albums, I feel as they are not nearly as good as a lot of the 11-30 range (MVotC, Melodrama, This Is Happening, Black Messiah, DAMN., anyone?)

Those are also easily my least favorite two out of the ten. There are a lot of tracks that are hard for me to get through, although Blonde does have a few great songs. It's a shame they're keeping out two fantastic albums in unrepresented years, MVotC and Let England Shake. I haven't gotten into D'Angelo and The Vanguard yet, but I do prefer all those other albums you named to Blonde and A Seat at the Table.

I actually really do like Let England Shake a lot, don’t know why I didn’t include it in my little list up there. One thing I’ve found about myself is that I prefer DAMN. much more than a lot of people. Personally, I like it more than TPAB, but I do understand that albums appeal and visionary style, and I believe that it’s position on the list is well warrentrd

I downloaded the April 10th update of the spreadsheet. For some reason, all of the Rank and Score values show up as "#DIV/0" with the error message: "Function DIVIDE parameter 2 cannot be zero."

For reference, I'm currently viewing the spreadsheet on Google Sheets.

I wonder if there's some sort of problem using Google Sheets? I'll try uploading the next update directly to Google Sheets and see if that can work. If not, Henrik might need to take a look.

Re: EOD 2010s Albums Spreadsheet Updates

Post by Kingoftonga »

Here's the newest update, with the following lists added:

Musikorner (Spain) - 2010-2019: los 50 mejores discos
Mixmag (UK) - THE 72 BEST ALBUMS OF THE DECADE 2010-2019
MeHaceRuido (Mex) - Best Albums of the 2010s (Spanish language)
Aquarium Drunkard (US) EOD Albums
Exclaim! (CAN) - 50 Best Canadian Albums of the 2010s
MOWNO (France) - 100 disques de la décennie (International)

Something strange is happening with the spreadsheet, as several people noted above. The formulas work fine when I enter the information, but when I save an update, something seems to break in Excel. I'm going to reach out to Henrik for advice.
