Ineligible as this U2 & this Taylor Swift album (last one was great) in top 10? :-o

Ooh, Liam and Noel would NOT like being tied (and fucking Jann Wenner is out of RS, so I guess they actually liked the new U2 album. Reputation, however, I can't explain).

Ha ha. Doesn't work that way (unfortunate as the results sometimes are), but nice try!

Putting the latest Bob Dylan cover album lower than the top 20 is restraint on their part.

Second Swift appearance. And in a top 10 :( I hope it'll stop here.

Hadn't spotted that. Wonder who'll be most upset:

- Noel;
- Liam; or
- Harold?

No worries - for ties like this, I just give both albums the assigned rank. Believe me, this kind of thing is the least of my worries.

Alright, fuck me. Apparently U2's high spot is Wenner's doing after all:
https://consequenceofsound.net/2017/11/ ... nn-wenner/
I'm just annoyed. Maybe I'll like it, maybe I won't, but just like with Songs of Innocence it makes me feel like my opinion is invalidated because magazines like RS are just going to place it high out of favoritism. What annoys me even more is that I'm pretty sure, no matter what the rumors about Bono's cocky behavior are, he wouldn't force a magazine to make his album one of the best-ranked of the year.

In this case it was to be expected, as Swift is part of a group of artists that Rolling Stone defends no matter what.
I say this without having heard the Swift album myself (and I don't really care to do so at the moment).

For Future's "Mask Off" they have it titled as just

Future, "Mask Off"

But when you read the description, they mention "The Kendrick remix brings "Mask Off" to a new level as he declares himself the incarnation of Prince and yells, "Get your ass up and be inspired!""

Does that mean they included the original Mask Off version or the remix?

The good songs are very good, the bad songs are very bad, and no matter how you slice it, Sign of the Times isn’t even close to being song of the year and I guarantee they’ll forget about it when they make their decade list.

This is the first time I closely followed the album releases of a whole year, having heard quite a bit of the better acclaimed ones; with a great deal of satisfaction I should say. I've also noticed that this hardly gives me any knowledge of the songs that do well on these lists. Most of these Rolling Stone choices were hits, but surprisingly few of them appear on the great albums. Is the gap between single and album getting bigger and bigger? Anyway, the pop hits I know of these are hardly among the best songs of the year for me, but that is nothing new. Still not a pop guy.

No. Rolling Stone is just fascinatingly bad at this.

Also re: this, there's no reason it can't be both. This website will likely include both anyway.

Among the many head scratchers here, Kesha's Rainbow at #4 but Praying nowhere to be seen... and Lorde's Homemade Dynamite at #2 but no Green Light. I'm not a fan of having one song represent each artist, which results in things like the Neighborhood #1 controversy we're having in the Overlooked game.

Jann Wenner has struck me as the ultimate spoiled brat who will declare crappy albums the stuff of greatness, or will throw his own staff under the bus so he can buddy up more with rock stars. I once passed along an RYM article (links below) that, in part, chronicles some of Wenner's sins throughout the decades, as they played out in his magazine.

Haven't heard the new U2 yet; didn't think their last album was bad (album of the year, though, that's a different discussion). My relation with Rolling Stone is love-hate or complicated, though -- I didn't really know what anyone else thought of "Sign of the Times," and it turns out I'm on the same page with them. I don't follow current metal but I assume that list operates independently of Wenner's input (otherwise it would look pretty hilarious).

U2 probably would have been #1 on that list, too.

I hope no one tells him or the Grammys that Jethro Tull is dropping a new album next year...
