LCD Soundsystem off to a strong start with #1 in both Mojo and Uncut

Source: me, sitting here with a copy of the magazine in my hand, typing it all in - as will probably be evident from the number of typos.

Look for Kendrick to blast to top of the list as soon as US rags and websites start chiming in... as I said today on Coachella message board, okay with either finishing number 1, like both albums, but only because it was a year without a single bona-fide classic album (nothing that I see landing close to top 200 on this site when all is said and done, if even top 300). Still kinda sucks in a way that it's going to come down to a two horse race between what is arguably the weakest major release in each artists discography.

Personally, I lot of my choices for best of this year I don't see landing anywhere near the top off these lists - Valerie June's latest, Wolf Parade's Cry Cry Cry which of all the 2017 indie comeback albums surprised me the most in a positive way.

Surprised Aldous Harding has broken ahead of the pack in what was an absolutely loaded year for this new wave of Spotify angled super intimate female folksters/singer-songwriters - Jessca Hopp, Julie Byrne, BIg Thief, Nadine Shah,Nicole Atkins,Aimee Mann (not so new admittedly), Laura Marling,Vagabon,Waxahatchee, Susanne Sunfor,Feist,The Weather Station, Rhianna Giddeons,Valerie June,Bedouine,Pheobe Bridgers, Julien Baker, Jay Som,Kelly Lee Owens, and so on that are all similarly worthwhile.

Not one US publication has chimed in yet - as soon as they do your hip-hop favs will quickly ascend to near the top of the concensus lists.

To be honest - I actually like the UK takes, they respect hip hop, but they at least make hip hop artists earn their ranking...that's completely gone out the window in the US where Hip Hop is so much bigger now than rock n roll and most of the publications/websites are more worried about staying in favor with the top artists in the genre and their managers/agents and maintaining access to said artists than giving honest appraisals of their work.

Just look at metacritic - this was a fun year, a good year, with a lot of interesting stuff, but a very subpar year for elite albums - nothing in the ballpark of MBDTF, Let England Shake, The Seer, TPAB,The Epic, Lost In A Dream, Singles, Benji, etc, etc,- yet if you go over to metacritic's scores for this year, there's more above 80 aggregate scores than I remember ever seeing in year's past.

What is this? There's a QOTSA album named Villains, and a Grizzly Bear album named Painted Ruins that doesn't appear elsewhere in the list...

Eddie said he made a lot of typos. Obviously it's Villains.

The album came out in the U.K. too late to be included in their 2016 list, so they're making up for it here. Don't worry, any 2016 albums will be ID'd as such on my spreadsheet. (I am expecting Run the Jewels 3 to be a major presence - I hope I'm not wrong.)

Was expecting for it to turn up as well, slightly surprised and disappointed it hasn't so far.

So far we've only seen lists from the UK (well, and a prog only US list), where rap just isn't all that popular compared to the US. Once the US lists come in I expect to see a lot of RTJ3.

I agree, sure. But even on the UK lists Kendrick Lamar and some other hip-hop acts have shown up quite high on most lists.
