Hey, jamieW, I feel exactly the same way!! Out of curiosity I looked to my 1991 list to find the album as #5 of the year. I still like some of the songs (the first half on the ranking above) and the influences of Gospel and Dub are extremely welcomed but now I find this album vastly overrated. And I use "overrated" in the sense that I don't feel that the album fully deserves the acclaim it receives from the critics. It's usually described as a milestone on the mix of Dance and Rock but: a) Primal Scream were not the first ones doing this, being preceded by New Order in almost a decade and by the Madchester bands, in fact at this stage of their career Primal Scream were more or less trend-hopping and b) mixing the two styles should not be doing a song in Stones style followed by a House song, in my opinion it should be to achieve a satisfactory and personal way of integrating both (something only achieved here IMHO in "Loaded" and "Slip Inside This House").
I also used purposely the adjective "personal" because the thing that I liked less when I revisited the album was the lack of personality of the band. Here Primal Scream sounded like their producers. Produced by Jimmy Miller they sound like the Stones, produced by the Orb they sound like a Trip-Hop act, produced by Hypnotone they sound like a Psychedelic band and produced by Andrew Weatherall they sound like, well, Andrew Weatherall. In fact I put at the bottom of my rankings all the tracks produced by Weatherall (except "Loaded"). Maybe I'm wrong but to me these tracks seem like being recorded with little involvement of the band. Take for instance a track like "Don't Fight It, Feel It." It's an excellent House track but it seems like if the band was out partying when it was recorded, it sounds like played completely by the producer with guest musicians (as Denise Johnson on vocals). The band seem absent on most of the tracks. Even Bobby Gillespie is rarely featured as lead singer on the Weatherall-produced tracks (he only sings in 2 of 7 tracks).
Well, that's only my opinion. And moreover I understand the reasons of the ones that like it (I was one of them!).

Great review, Honorio. I couldn't put my finger on the reason I liked it less than before (besides the fact there was a redundancy to many tracks that must have seemed fresh to me years ago), but it certainly does sound more like a "producer" entity than a "band" entity. (In fact, it feels a little overproduced in spots.) There are definitely highlights, but there were also times I found the album tedious.

Surprisingly, I just re-listened to "XTRMNTR" again recently and had the exact opposite reaction - I liked it better than I remembered. Maybe that also factored into my reaction, since I thought I'd feel the same about "Screamadelica," as it's been quite a while since I'd heard it. Perhaps my expectations were just a little too high for this one...

6.Come Together (the REMIXED AMERICAN version)
1. Movin' On Up
8. Damaged
11. Shine Like Stars
3. Don't Fight It, Feel It
4. Higher Than The Sun
9. I'm Coming Down
10. Higher Than The Sun (A Dub Symphony in Two Parts)
2. Slip Inside This House
7. Loaded
5. Inner Fight

While I no longer think Loaded is a load of crap I think it's ridiculously overrated and by far near the very bottom when it comes to my favorite Primal Scream singles. I just don't get it. Lots of dubbing....AND?????? What else does this have to offer? And I love me some Scream. I'm also incredibly grateful the overdubbed British version of Come Together was scrapped from the American release & in its place the remarkably superior remix of the song.

Hello,

Another incredible album whose geniality and forward vision must be credited to the band itself, but also to the work of producer Andrew Weatherall. They pushed the mix of pop-rock-techno to a different level. A few years later they tried to equal this masterpiece on the interesting Vanishing Point but could not get higher than the sun.

1- 06 | Come Together
2- 02 | Slip Inside This House
3- 03 | Don't Fight It, Feel It
4- 01 | Movin' On Up
5- 04 | Higher Than the Sun
6- 07 | Loaded
7- 08 | Damaged
8- 11 | Shine Like Stars
9- 09 | I'm Comin' Down
10- 10 | Higher Than the Sun (A Dub Symphony in Two Parts)
11- 05 | Inner Flight
