8 albums updated. And ordinaryperson as the new #3 voter surpassing whuntva! Come on, ordinaryperson, let's rank, jamieW and me are waiting for you…
Some unusual results on the album of the week. It has been the first case so far of negative correlation, we chose the same Top 3 but with the order completely reversed. We also had the first case of a tie with the new rules, with "Lost in the Dream" and "In Reverse" tied on the eighth position with exactly the same votes on the same positions (one 6, two 8s and two 9s).

7 albums updated and 10 voters for "The Doors." You will have two weeks for voting for the next album ("Ramones") because I will be on a holiday trip to Scotland.

These two weeks we have seen 7 updated albums (with a change on a #1 on "Modern Vampires of the City") and ordinaryperson joining jamieW and me as the only ones who have ranked all the albums (69 so far). Again you will have two weeks to vote for the next album ("Daydream Nation") because I'm leaving for the second part of my holidays, this time to Ibiza.

Maybe we had an all-time low for this third edition of the Rank the Tracks game. During two weeks only two albums updated apart of the album of the week. August holidays or interest beginning to vanish (now that we're past two thirds of the game with 70 of 100 albums ranked)? Only time will tell…

Nice turnout for Oasis, with 14 voters. I don't expect a nowhere near participation for Burial's "Untrue" despite the perfect timing, just on the first week of our 2007 Poll.

In a couple of weeks we will have 75 albums ranked so maybe it's time to introduce some changes on the following albums looking for (possibly) more participation. Since now two albums have 4 people willing to participate (these were the rules I stated on this thread) I will include them on the next round, replacing the albums of its particular decades. The proposal of Henry to include a Steely Dan album as a tribute to Walter Becker got little following so far. So the next 4 weeks we will have:
74. The Who's Who's Next (1971)
75. R.E.M.'s Murmur (1983)
(closing with that the original plan)

76. A Tribe Called Quest's The Low End Theory (1991) replacing Radiohead's The Bends (1995)
77. Kanye West's The College Dropout (2004) replacing Arctic Monkeys' Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (2006)
(even if these changes are done to encourage participation I got my doubts about A Tribe Called Quest obtaining more participation than Radiohead but you never know…)

After this I will stop temporarily the game waiting for the main update to include the new incorporations on the first 7 positions of 1950s and 2010s and on the first 13 positions of the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2000s.

And after that I could include (as suggested by prosecutorgodot) the albums with a a higher position on our all-time list replacing the original ones that were:
78. Arcade Fire's The Suburbs (2010)
79. Ornette Coleman's The Shape of Jazz to Come (1959)
80. The Rolling Stones' Beggars Banquet (1968)
81. The Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers (1971)
82. Paul Simon's Graceland (1986)
83. Pavement's Slanted and Enchanted (1992)
84. The White Stripes' White Blood Cells (2001)
85. The Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed (1969)
86. Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life (1976)
87. De La Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising (1989)
88. Eminem's The Marshal Mathers LP (2000)
89. St. Vincent's St. Vincent (2014)
90. The Crickets' The "Chirping" Crickets (1957)
91. James Brown's Live at the Apollo (1963)
92. Stevie Wonder's Innervisions (1973)
93. The Jesus and Mary Chain's Psychocandy (1985)
94. Oasis' Definitely Maybe (1994)
95. Animal Collective's Merryeweather Post Pavillion (2009)
96. Love's Forever Changes (1967)
97. Joni Mitchell's Blue (1971)
98. Pixies' Surfer Rosa (1988)
99. Wu-Tang Clan's Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (1993)
100. Franz Ferdinand's Franz Ferdinand (2005)

My point is people will respond to ATCQ's The Low End Theory too. Look I love Radiohead as much as the next person but The Low End Theory deserves a Rank The Tracks thread. Whether it gets more participation than The Bends who knows but people will participate in that album.

6 albums updated and 5 voters for the album of the week (the lowest participation so far, tied with The War on Drugs).
Next week we will have the 2010s highest ranked album on our own all-time Poll (not already ranked on Rank the Tracks). Blackstar? To Pimp a Butterfly?

After the second album included by popular demand (and last, of the four people stating beforehand that will participate only one —Nassim— finally did) I've created a poll to know your pereferences about the possible remaining albums. I'll copy in this thread the options on this poll.

Since the update is not still available I decided to give the option to introduce albums on the last quarter part of the game that could be more "popular" among the Forum members using our last all-time poll (as suggested previously by prosecutorgodot) but following more or less the actual distribution by decades. I would like to know your opinion about three different options:

Option 1:

It would include the original planning (based on the official AM list) with some changes due to the inclusion of three albums by popular demand ("The Low End Theory," "The College Dropout" and "To Pimp a Butterfly"):

79. Ornette Coleman's The Shape of Jazz to Come (1959)
80. The Rolling Stones' Beggars Banquet (1968)
81. The Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers (1971)
82. Paul Simon's Graceland (1986)
83. Radiohead's The Bends (1995)
84. Arctic Monkeys' Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (2006)
85. The Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed (1969)
86. Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life (1976)
87. De La Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising (1989)
88. Pavement's Slanted and Enchanted (1992)
89. The White Stripes' White Blood Cells (2001)
90. Arcade Fire's The Suburbs (2010)
91. The Crickets' The "Chirping" Crickets (1957)
92. James Brown's Live at the Apollo (1963)
93. Stevie Wonder's Innervisions (1973)
94. The Jesus and Mary Chain's Psychocandy (1985)
95. Oasis' Definitely Maybe (1994)
96. Eminem's The Marshal Mathers LP (2000)
97. Love's Forever Changes (1967)
98. Joni Mitchell's Blue (1971)
99. Pixies' Surfer Rosa (1988)
100. Wu-Tang Clan's Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (1993)

The three albums out of the original planning (being displaced by the three albums I mentioned before) were:
90. St. Vincent's St. Vincent (2014) (#465 in our all-time list)
96. Animal Collective's Merryeweather Post Pavillion (2009) (#127)
100. The Flaming Lips' The Soft Bulletin (1999) (#146)

Option 2:

It would follow the same distribution by decades used so far but replacing the albums on the official main list for the ones ranked higher on our poll. The list would be:

79. Charles Mingus' Mingus Ah Um (1959)
80. The Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed (1969)
81. Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life (1976)
82. Tom Waits' Rain Dogs (1985)
83. Radiohead's The Bends (1995)
84. Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002)
85. Love's Forever Changes (1967)
86. Stevie Wonder's Innervisions (1973)
87. Paul Simon's Graceland (1986)
88. Pearl Jam's Ten (1991)
89. The White Stripes' White Blood Cells (2001)
90. David Bowie's ★ (2016)
91. Ornette Coleman's The Shape of Jazz to Come (1959)
92. The Rolling Stones' Beggars Banquet (1968)
93. Fleetwood Mac's Rumours (1977)
94. Bruce Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A. (1984)
95. Nirvana's In Utero (1993)
96. Arctic Monkeys' Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (2006)
97. The Zombies' Odessey & Oracle (1968)
98. David Bowie's Hunky Dory (1971)
99. The Cure's Disintegration (1989)
100. Björk's Post (1995)

The albums left out of the Option 1 list would be:
81. The Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers (1971) (#43 in our all-time list)
87. De La Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising (1989) (#126)
88. Pavement's Slanted and Enchanted (1992) (#166)
90. Arcade Fire's The Suburbs (2010) (#88)
91. The Crickets' The "Chirping" Crickets (1957) (#569)
92. James Brown's Live at the Apollo (1963) (#328)
94. The Jesus and Mary Chain's Psychocandy (1985) (#287)
95. Oasis' Definitely Maybe (1994) (#115)
96. Eminem's The Marshal Mathers LP (2000) (#211)
98. Joni Mitchell's Blue (1971) (#63)
99. Pixies' Surfer Rosa (1988) (#177)
100. Wu-Tang Clan's Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (1993) (#112)

Option 3:

Since the 1950s albums usually have lower participation (we have ranked 6 1950s albums so far and only "Kind of Blue" had more than 10 voters) we can replace the two remaining 1950s album by the two albums not included on the option 2 that end higher on our all-time poll. This list would look like:

79. The Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed (1969)
80. Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life (1976)
81. Tom Waits' Rain Dogs (1985)
82. Radiohead's The Bends (1995)
83. Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002)
84. Love's Forever Changes (1967)
85. Stevie Wonder's Innervisions (1973)
86. Paul Simon's Graceland (1986)
87. Pearl Jam's Ten (1991)
88. The White Stripes' White Blood Cells (2001)
89. David Bowie's ★ (2016)
90. The Rolling Stones' Beggars Banquet (1968)
91. Fleetwood Mac's Rumours (1977)
92. Bruce Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A. (1984)
93. Nirvana's In Utero (1993)
94. Arctic Monkeys' Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (2006)
95. The Zombies' Odessey & Oracle (1968)
96. David Bowie's Hunky Dory (1971)
97. The Cure's Disintegration (1989)
98. Björk's Post (1995)
99. The Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers (1971)
100. Simon & Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water (1970)

The albums left out of the Option 2 list would be:
79. Charles Mingus' Mingus Ah Um (1959) (#475 in our all-time list)
91. Ornette Coleman's The Shape of Jazz to Come (1959) (#477)

Note (and minor spoiler): the only positions that could change later are the two Stevie Wonder albums on options 2 and 3, it depends on the final positions they achieve on our all-time poll. I'll edit those positions later if needed.

To my surprise "To Pimp a Butterfly" has been the album with less participation so far (only four people voting during the first week) despite being perceived as a forum favourite. Hopefully some of the album fans will vote during the next weeks. Hey, people, 32 of you voted for the album for the all-time poll, 20 of you even have it on your all time Top 100. Wouldn't you mind to participate on Rank the Tracks?

About the result of the poll we are going to continue finally with Option 2 using the positions of the albums on our all-time poll instead the official AM list. The next albums will be:
79. Charles Mingus' Mingus Ah Um (1959)
80. The Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed (1969)
81. Stevie Wonder's Innervisions (1973)
82. Tom Waits' Rain Dogs (1985)
83. Radiohead's The Bends (1995)
84. Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002)
85. Love's Forever Changes (1967)
86. Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life (1976)
87. Paul Simon's Graceland (1986)
88. Pearl Jam's Ten (1991)
89. The White Stripes' White Blood Cells (2001)
90. David Bowie's ★ (2016)
91. Ornette Coleman's The Shape of Jazz to Come (1959)
92. The Rolling Stones' Beggars Banquet (1968)
93. Fleetwood Mac's Rumours (1977)
94. Bruce Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A. (1984)
95. Nirvana's In Utero (1993)
96. Arctic Monkeys' Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (2006)
97. The Zombies' Odessey & Oracle (1968)
98. David Bowie's Hunky Dory (1971)
99. The Cure's Disintegration (1989)
100. Björk's Post (1995)

Again a low participation for the album of the week (although it was expectable). On the other hand we had 4 albums updated thanks to Listyguy, two of them with significant changes, "Fools Gold" is now the critics' #1 with a lower rating by us (tied with "Fables of Faubus" from this week's album) and "King Kunta" is now the new #1 for us. "King Kunta" replaced "How Much a Dollar Cost" as the lowest ranked #1 so far and the first one without any #1 vote. On the other hand "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" entered directly on the Top 10.

6 updated albums and two new #1s, "Better Git in Your Soul" replaced "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" at the top of "Mingus Ah Um" and "Where It's At" regained the top position on "Odelay."
And, as expected, "Gimme Shelter" entered directly the Top 5.

This week I've made a massive update on the results of Rank the Tracks (especially on the correlation with the critics list) because of the main AM update.

First of all the changes on the positions of the albums on the main AM list would have changed some of the albums to rank in the future if the Option 1 on the last poll would have been elected. If we we have chosen to follow the albums from the update instead the albums of our all time poll the list would be:
83. Radiohead's The Bends (1995)
84. Arctic Monkeys' Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (2006)
85. The Rolling Stones' Beggars Banquet (1968)
86. Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life (1976)
87. Paul Simon's Graceland (1986)
88. Oasis' Definitely Maybe (1994)
89. The White Stripes' White Blood Cells (2001)
90. Arcade Fire's The Suburbs (2010)
91. Ornette Coleman's The Shape of Jazz to Come (1959)
92. James Brown's Live at the Apollo (1963)
93. The Rolling Stones' Sticky Fingers (1971)
94. De La Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising (1989)
95. Nirvana's In Utero (1993)
96. Eminem's The Marshal Mathers LP (2000)
97. Love's Forever Changes (1967)
98. Joni Mitchell's Blue (1971)
99. The Jesus and Mary Chain's Psychocandy (1985)
100. Wu-Tang Clan's Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (1993)

The albums displaced from the Option 1 that lose the poll would have been:
88. Pavement's Slanted and Enchanted (1992)
91. The Crickets' The "Chirping" Crickets (1957)
99. Pixies' Surfer Rosa (1988)

The albums displaced from the Option 2 that got more votes would have been:
84. Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002)
88. Pearl Jam's Ten (1991)
90. David Bowie's ★ (2016)
93. Fleetwood Mac's Rumours (1977)
94. Bruce Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A. (1984)
97. The Zombies' Odessey & Oracle (1968)
98. David Bowie's Hunky Dory (1971)
99. The Cure's Disintegration (1989)
100. Björk's Post (1995)

Having said that I got no plans of going back to the official AM order or doing another poll, so I think I'll stick to the albums of the Option 2. You only need to scroll up on this same thread to see which albums will be next.

And about the changes on this week:

1. We have a new #1 for "To Pimp a Butterfly," "The Blacker the Berry." Every week brings a new number one for this album.

2. Almost every album ranked so far changed the correlation with the critics list with the new update. The only albums without any change on the critics' ranking were:
- What's Going On
- Is This It
- Remain in Light (yes, "The Great Curve" is still absent on the AM list).
- In the Wee Small Hours
- Endtroducing.....
- Stankonia
- Screamadelica
- Untrue
- Murmur
- The College Dropout
- Innervisions
So the other 71 albums had changes on the critics rankings and on our correlations with them. You can check the new correlations on the results thread.

3. On the other side 5 albums got now all their songs ranked by the critics:
- Kind of Blue
- The Velvet Underground & Nico
- Grace
- Led Zeppelin IV
- Let It Bleed

4. Oddly this huge change on the rankings only rendered a new number 1 for the critics, on Vampire Weekend's "Modern Vampires of the City" where "Hannah Hunt" replaced "Step." Another change came at the top of "Rain Dogs" ("Downtown Rain" overtaking "Jockey Full of Bourbon") but it didn't affect the correlation being our album of the week.

5. The new rankings reduced significantly the correlations with our lists. For instance, previously we had 14 albums with an exact correlation between the acclaimed songs and our rankings but now we only have 7, which are:
- What's Going On
- Illinois
- Songs for Swingin' Lovers!
- Time Out
- Untrue
- Murmur
- The Low End Theory

A quite disappointing participation for the album of the week with only 6 voters, especially when "Innervisions" was ranked by 16 voters on the first week. Too many songs? Too difficult to rank?

A really weak week without any update and only 4 voters for the album of the week. Next week I won't post the results of the album of the week ("Ten") on Sunday as usual (I will be in Newcastle to visit Dan and then in Edinburgh for the New Year's Eve) but I'll include the next album of the week ("White Blood Cells") and then I will post the results of "Ten" on Tuesday.

Merry Christmas to everyone in the forum...

Updated with the results for "Ten" (with an excellent participation even during Christmas week) and two other albums after I came back from my trip to Britain. I enjoyed a lot the New Year's Eve in Edinburgh with events as impressive as the Torchlight Procession and as fun as the Street Party. But I especially enjoyed the visit to Dan and Thorben in Newcastle, their hospitality (and Dan's excellent cooking), the magical walk through Durham under the snow, the pub tour on Newscatle and the Folk Christmas music concert at the wonderful Sage Gateshead. Sadly this time there was no "official" picture, after the second beer we though of reproducing the cover art of Prefab Sprout' "Steve McQueen" (a band of Newcastle featuring three guys and a girl, just like us) but the next day we had a lot of snow and we couldn't find a motorcycle on the street to reproduce the cover art. Next time…
Thank you very much, Dan! And a happy new year to everyone in the forum...

Honorio, sorry for the late reply! After a busy couple of weeks of not having the opportunity to check out every forum post, I only noticed your post about your visit to Newcastle today. Just like when I visited you in Spain, it was lovely to spend time with you and your wife Ana. The weather was cold, but the company and conversation was warm.

About reproducing the cover art of Prefab Sprout's Steve McQueen: as Honorio knows, my partner happens to work very closely with Wendy Smith from Prefab Sprout at the moment, and she found the idea of reproducing the cover art very amusing. So yes, Honorio... next time.

A hard day (apart from the good/bad news about Henrik that I will comment later). Rateyourmusic changed (again) the urls for the cover arts so every cover art (not only for this thread but for every thread I posted on during the last few years) has gone. I asked them and they're not going to use the old urls again (for legal reasons) so I replaced every cover art taken from RYM for the Wkipedia ones on the Rank the Tracks threads. One by one.
Apart from that we had a good participation on the album of the week ("Rumours") and a change on the #1 of "Loveless" with "Only Shallow" replacing "Soon."

A (quite) disappointing participation on the album of the week, only 9 voters for "Born in the U.S.A.", an album I perceived as popular inside the forum.

Four albums updated (with a change of #1 on "Odelay") mainly thanks to bootsy (hey, thank you for keeping the game alive amidst the maelstrom of polls).

A quite disapponinting participation on the album of the week ("Hunky Dory") giving the fact that the two previous Bowie albums got massive participations (33 voters for "Ziggy" and 16 for "Blackstar"). But anyway "Life on Mars?" almost got the top spot of all the albums #1s.
Only two weeks left for the end of Rank the Tracks…

And we are entering the last week of Rank the Tracks…

So that was all, with "Post" we have ranked 100 albums and the game came to an end. Many thanks to everyone who voted here (a total of 117 voters!). A special thanks to jamieW and ordinaryperson who ranked the 100 albums!! And a very special thanks to babydoll and BleuPanda who preceded me as hosts, especially to BleuPanda, the one who invited the game!

But, even if there are not going to be new albums, the doors are not closed, we are still open 24/7. You can vote for any album, I'll be counting your votes and updating the rankings every Sunday. At least during 2018. The results and comments threads will remain on the general forum this week but next week they'll pass to the Rank the Tracks subforum where they'll remain indefinitely. Every Sunday I will point out to the albums updated. The stats that appear at the beginning of this thread will also appear from now on at the end of the results thread.

Thank you for participating!

Thanks for organizing this, Honorio. One question I have is to which extent the order of the tracks influences the results. Do the first tracks tend to do better than the last? And if they do, is it because the best songs are often early on the album, or would the results slightly change if the track order was different?

I've noticed this as well. I feel like it's more of an issue with albums that aren't cold hard classics though. It seems like every album outside of the top 400 or so has the first track as the top rated track. I personally think that it's because the critics want an album represented on their song lists, but they don't like an track a lot, so they start listening to the album, here the first track, think "this is great, I'll go with that one!" and that's that. Maybe a little bit of an extreme view, but there are a decent number of albums in the middle tiers of the AM list that I think fall into this trap.

Good observations, bonnielaurel and Listyguy. I did some (minor) research on our lists (only taking into account the highest ranked song from every album) and it's true, usually the price goes to the first song on the album (on 28/100). Next positions are:
- 4: 12/100
- 2: 9/100
- 7: 8/100
- 5, 9 and 11: 7/100
You can check it on the following graphic.
On 12/100 cases the highest ranked song was the first song on the second side of the original vinyl.
And on 6/100 the highest ranked song was the album closer ("A Day in the Life," "Decades," "Glory Box," "The End," "Scenario" and "Time of the Season").

This is such a cool project! Really wish I had actually noticed this before it was, you know, the final album.

If you're actually going to be accepting votes from Johnny come latelys like myself, I might start at the beginning and work my way through :D

Where would you want the late-rankings posted? On the albums themselves or here?

Honorio, I will be getting back to ranking some of the albums I haven't had a chance to rank yet at some point.I just haven't had time to go back and give each of those albums a proper listen but I will at some point.

That's great, Mulholland and bootsy! I definitely prefer you vote on the albums threads, on the results thread (http://www.acclaimedmusic.net/forums/vi ... f=2&t=4709) you can find all the links.
