I plan to go in cycles of decades with the 1950s and 2010s once every other cycle. I will go with the top album of each respective decade, but I might skip questionable albums (I doubt anyone wants to rank the tracks of 69 Love Songs, no matter how great the album is).

Also, if you missed an album that you want to rank, you can do so in this thread. Please keep it to 1 old album per week. I will update the results. Please don't bump previous threads. I'd like to keep everything in the current topic and the result topic.

I suppose I’ve underrated this one over the years, because in my opinion it gets stronger as it goes along, instead of right away, and it veers a bit. In some other threads, we’ve been talking about all-time TV shows, and about comparing different mediums, and I’ve noticed even a lot of the better TV shows have issues that I have to just shrug off. There’s nothing about this album that I can’t shrug off, too; placed #131 on my all-time album submission, it could probably crack my top 100 next time out.

I rated it #190, but I have much the same feelings as Ordinaryperson in that it gets better with different approaches and in different places. It could experience a jump when we do the poll maybe next year.

I remember thinking R.E.M. were so boring when I was a kid and these albums were coming out. My dad would always play them and I didn’t really get why until I hit my 20’s and then it all sort of clicked. Honestly I can’t even imagine not loving this album now, and I think it has at least half a dozen classic tracks. I have to say in contrast to what I said about Achtung Baby (which I also love), Automatic has aged extremely well, and I think it’s genuine and earnest moments have made it endure in a way that some of R.E.M.’s contemporaries couldn’t match because R.E.M. never tried to be too cool/edgy for their fans, all while being just weird enough that people are still interested almost 30 years out. I think people are always going to love this.

Hi,

According to RYM this would be my second favourite album. It was first once.

When I decided to rate its tracks and before I played it, I though that maybe I had overrated it and it was not that good, but as soon as it started I remembered how good it was.

Almost 30 years after it appeared I still don’t understand New Orleans instrumental, the only weak track, but it doesn’t affect the quality of the album as a whole.

What a pleasure to listen again to all these great albums.
