Rank the Tracks: The Clash's London Calling

Post by BleuPanda »

The basic idea is to rank the tracks off the album each week to see how each track compares to each other. It's an excuse to go back to classic albums and a way to gauge the best and worst tracks of the most acclaimed albums. Simply rank all the tracks from your favorite to your least.

I plan to go in cycles of decades with the 1950s and 2010s once every other cycle. I will go with the top album of each respective decade, but I might skip questionable albums (I doubt anyone wants to rank the tracks of 69 Love Songs, no matter how great the album is). Next week will be Michael Jackson's Thriller.

Also, if you missed an album that you want to rank, you can do so in this thread. Please keep it to 1 old album per week. I will update the results. Please don't bump previous threads. I'd like to keep everything in the current topic and the result topic.

I enjoyed that much listening again to "London Calling" that I needed to make some comments about that album:
a) Some albums like "London Calling" (or "The Queen Is Dead") are sitting so confortably at the top of my all-time list for so many years that in fact I rarely listen to them. It's refreshing (thanks to this wonderful "Rank the Tracks" game) to revisit these albums and find out that those traits that made you fall in love with them are still in place and intact. "London Calling" was for me a real eye-opener, it came out when I was fifteen and I was literally blown away by the album. I decided not to listen to music from the past anymore and become a punkie, something that obviously (and fortunately) did not last. But the impact on me was tremendous, it was one of those albums that made me an addict.
b) Oddly now I see the album as quite "balanced." To me it represents now the perfect balance between authentic and creative (the purity usually relies on endless repetition of a formula but The Clash managed to expand their sound without losing their genuineness), between rehearsed and spontaneous (the arrangements were surprisingly meticulous and rich but they retained freshness and spontaneity, a balance completely lost on "Sandinista"), between modern and classic (they were part of the punk hordes that took the rock scene by storm but the songs on "London Calling" got classic rock and other classic styles like soul or reggae on its DNA).
c) In fact they were so classics that they included some "middle-eights" in the Tin Pan Alley tradition (something widely absent on the music of today). Many songs on "London Calling" included middle-eights parts (or "bridges" if you want it), songs like "Death or Glory," "Koka Kola," "Clampdown" or "Four Horsemen." But the most glorious of it all is the one on "I'm Not Down," an outstanding bridge that should go to the pantheon of the best middle-eights ever. By the way I compiled some of my favourite middle-eights (although I admit having borrowed some inspiration from web-pages and forums).

25 gorgeous middle eights in chronological order:
1. The Everly Brothers - So Sad (Is it any wonder that I feel so blue…)
2. The Righteous Brothers - You've Lost That Loving Feeling (Baby, baby, I get down on my knees…)
3. Smokey Robinson & the Miracles - The Tracks of My Tears (Outside I'm masquerading…)
4. The Beach Boys - Wouldn't It Be Nice (Maybe if we think and wish…)
5. Bob Dylan - Just Like a Woman (It was raining from the first…)
6. Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell - Ain't No Mountain High Enough (No wind, no rain, no winter's cold…)
7. The Beatles - A Day in the Life (Woke up, fell out of bed…)
8. Simon & Garfunkel - America (Laughing on the bus…)
9. Elvis Presley - Suspicious Minds (Oh let our love survive…)
10. Carole King - You Got a Friend (Ain't it good to know that you've got a friend…)
11. David Bowie - Changes (Strange fascination fascinating me…)
12. Gram Parsons - Love Hurts (Some fools think of happiness…)
13. Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run (Beyond the Palace hemi-powered drones…)
14. Elvis Costello & the Attractions - Oliver's Army (Hong Kong is up for grabs…)
15. The Clash - I'm Not Down (And I have lived that kind of day…)
16. The Police - Every Breath You Take (Since you've gone I've been lost…)
17. Madonna - Into the Groove (Live out your fantasy here with me…)
18. XTC - Dear God (Did you make disease…)
19. Pixies - Monkey Gone to Heaven (If man is 5…)
20. The Cure - Friday I'm in Love (Dressed up to the eyes…)
21. R.E.M. - Everybody Hurts (Don't throw your hand…)
22. Pulp - Common People (Rent a flat above a shop…)
23. Elliott Smith - Waltz #2 (I'm here today, expect it to stay on and on and on…). Beautiful!!!
24. Kanye West - Power (Now this'll be a beautiful death, I'm jumping out the window…)
25. CeeLo Green - Fuck You (Now baby, baby, baby, why you wanna, wanna treat me so bad…)

Mmm, kinda like the idea. What do you think? Should I create a new thread about the subject?

The middle-eight isn't totally absent. I think in modern pop, this is where the wild rapper appears! Just saying.

This was my #122, but I actually think I was blowing smoke there. I haven't heard this album in its entirety. If I have, it was when I was much younger. But here are my rankings:

London Calling (#46 song)
Train in Vain
Clampdown
Four Horsemen
Lover's Rock
Guns of Brixton
I'm not Down
Spanish Bombs
Rudie Can't Fall
Lost in the Supermarket
The Right Profile
Wrong 'em Boyo
Death or Glory
Brand New Cadillac
Koka Kola
The Card Cheat
Jimmy Jazz
Revolution Rock
Hateful

I Spotify or Youtube the albums as I do these rankings. I highly encourage others to do the same.

The only one I didn't do that for was Nevermind, mostly because I know it pretty much by heart.

I would look forward to this, Honorio. The middle-eight of a song (which I often do think of as the bridge, as you mentioned) is often my favorite part. I am absolutely drawing a blank as to my favorites (besides a few of those you already listed), but while I'm stuck in my office this week listening to my I-Pod, I'll be taking notes so that I can participate in the new thread if you do have time to create it.

Thanks to this format I've realised that I overrate a lot of the classics, and I have dropped them on my personal list, making room for my personal favorites. This has happened with MBDTF, OK Computer and London Calling so far. It's not like they aren't classics, but just because they're ranked really high on this site, doesn't mean I should rank them about in the same place. So I think that's a positive realisation by me.

Edit: But being a Kanye fan, MBDTF dropped only from #5 to #9 of my all-time albums  :D
I feel like that

Well, you're right in fact. There are still quite a lot midlle-eights in modern music. I listened to the Top 25 of the 2010s and I found:
4. Arcade Fire - Reflektor (It’s just a reflection of a reflection…)
6. Robyn - Dancing on My Own (So far away but still so near…)
9. CeeLo Green - Fuck You! (Now baby, baby, baby…)
10. Kanye West feat. Pusha T - Runaway (Run away from me, baby…)
11. Lorde - Royals (We're bigger than we ever dreamed…)
13. Janelle Monáe feat. Big Boi - Tightrope (You gotta keep your balance…)
19. Usher - Climax (You see it's better if we…)
21. Big Boi feat. Cutty - Shutterbugg (Now this goes out to all my playas…)

8/25, not a bad proportion...

I like London Calling, but it's really hard to rank for me. Maybe some time in the future, but I've never aimed to listen to it like that.

Now it's time for me to revisit Exile on Main St. One of my favourite albums, but also another good example of an album that I never bothered to analyse like this. It's just so cohesive in it's own way and of course there are quite a bit of tracks to rank.

1. Let it Loose
2. Rocks Off
3. Shine a Light
4. Turd on the Run
5. Tumbling Dice
6. Loving Cup
7. All Down the Line
8. Ventilator Blues
9. Rip This Joint
10. Soul Survivor
11. Stop Breaking Down
12. Shake Your Hips
13. Happy
14. Casino Boogie
15. Torn and Frayed
16. Sweet Virginia
17. Sweet Black Angel
18. I Just Want to See His Face

This album is very hard to rank. The songs are consistently well-written, so consistent, that I have a hard time saying one song is better than another.
Personally, while I do enjoy the songs, none of the songs deeply resonate with me. I think it's because I didn't grow up with this album, so I don't have that nostalgia factor.

Mmm, kinda like the idea. What do you think? Should I create a new thread about the subject?
I'm years late to the debate but did you have a middle-eights poll in the end? Got to love me a good middle 8, they can make a song into something more (I find The Byrds' cover of All I Really Wanna Do plods by their standards until "I don't want to fake you out", which sets the stall for a gloriously melodic last minute). Or they can completely take over a track like Common People, which you've quite rightly chosen and where the song properly starts for me.

They're still alive as well and not only in guitar-based music. I can probably think of a more recent example but, just off the top of my head, the middle-eight in Shy FX's We Just Don't Care on the poppier end of drum and bass is just dreamy ("The chemistry is killing me between me and you...")

Anyway, task at hand- I went to see a tribute band play London Calling in sequence a couple months back, not that it's made it any easier to put these classics in order!

12| Death or Glory
09| Clampdown (again, a quality middle-8!)
14| The Card Cheat
06| Spanish Bombs
10| The Guns of Brixton
19| Train In Vain

No, in fact I even didn't make a new thread on the subject.

Do you think there'd be clamour for a thread/poll? I'd conduct the poll but I don't have Excel or the like to help with sorting all the data

I honestly think there'd be clamour enough but you can ask on the main (Music. Music. Music) thread...
I can help with the Excel.

Sweet, thanks Honorio, I'll check with the troops back at base, hopefully we can get the idea off the ground (please excuse the mixed metaphors there)!
