Rank the Tracks: Miles Davis' Kind of Blue

Post by BleuPanda »

The basic idea is to rank the tracks off the album each week to see how each track compares to each other. It's an excuse to go back to classic albums and a way to gauge the best and worst tracks of the most acclaimed albums. Simply rank all the tracks from your favorite to your least.

I plan to go in cycles of decades with the 1950s and 2010s once every other cycle. I will go with the top album of each respective decade, but I might skip questionable albums (I doubt anyone wants to rank the tracks of 69 Love Songs, no matter how great the album is). Next week will be The Beach Boys' Pet Sounds.

Also, if you missed an album that you want to rank, you can do so in this thread. Please keep it to 1 old album per week. I will update the results. Please don't bump previous threads. I'd like to keep everything in the current topic and the result topic.

1. So What
3. Blue in Green
4. All Blues
5. Flamenco Sketches
2. Freddie Freeloader

It hurts to put "Freddie Freeloader" last (I like it a lot, it showcases the blues connection of Davis' music) but if I had put any other track on the last position the feeling would have been similar. The differences of quality between the tracks is minimal, a consistent album if there's one.

This was a hard one because...

Well, it's all instrumental! It kinda blends together. They're good instrumentals, but still hard to distinguish.

Flamenco Sketches
Freddie Freeloader
So What
All Blues
Blue in Green

And belatedly, What's Going On:

What's Going On
Right On
Inner City Blues
Mercy Mercy Me
God is Love
What's Happening Brother
Save the Children
Flying High
Wholly Holy

I had not previously owned the latter album, but did very much enjoy it.

So What
Flamenco Sketches
All Blues
Blue in Green
Freddie Freeloader

"Freddie" is last because it doesn't have Bill Evans. No knock on Kelly, but he isn't Evans.

It's a bit odd to do this for an album that contains only five tracks. Are the next two going to be Free Jazz and Ascension?

Here's a belated ranking for MBDTF. It's the first album of the game with a song in my top 100 (top 50, in fact).

1. Power
2. All of the Lights
3. Dark Fantasy
4. Runaway
5. Lost In the World
6. Monster
7. Hell of a Life
8. Who Will Survive In America?
9. Gorgeous
10. So Appalled
11. Blame Game
12. Devil In a New Dress
13. All of the Lights (Interlude)
Splish splash, I was raking in the cash

Well, it's been nearly a month since I came here last. Very busy with the 500 albums poll and real life, so I couldn't participate in this. Well I'm back in the loop, so:

1. So What
4. All Blues
2. Freddie Freeloader
5. Flamenco Sketches
3. Blue in Green

An interesting case: I love this album when I'm really in the mood to listen to it, and at other times when I just happen to put it and realize I don't feel like listening to this kind of music, I just find it boring. Whatever, I feel like listening to it often enough to consider it a favourite.

And some useless catch-up:

Nirvana - Nevermind
3. Come As You Are
1. Smells Like Teen Spirit
12. Something in the Way
5. Lithium
8. Drain You
11. On a Plain
[13. Endless, Nameless]
9. Lounge Act
4. Breed
2. In Bloom
6. Polly
10. Stay Away
7. Territorial Pissings

I guess I'll never really like this album. I find it awesome but it just doesn't connect with me at all. I think I'll soon reach the point when I'll simply never listen to it again.

Arcade Fire - Funeral
9. Rebellion (Lies)
1. Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)
7. Wake Up
4. Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)
8. Haiti
3. Une année sans lumière
2. Neighborhood #2 (Laika)
10. In the Backseat
6. Crown of Love
5. Neighborhood #4 (7 Kettles)

By the results I've seen for this album, it's interesting to see that the songs with French lyrics just don't connect at all with forumers. I believe that the Haitian influences of Régine Chassagne are integral to Arcade Fire's musical universe. Otherwise, I've always felt this album worked better has a whole, not track-by-track (except "Rebellion (Lies)" which is a fantastic song).

Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
9. Runaway
11. Blame Game
5. All of the Lights
7. So Appalled
12. Lost in the World
3. Power
6. Monster
8. Devil in a New Dress
2. Gorgeous
13. Who Will Survive in America
10. Hell of a Life
4. All of the Lights (Interlude)
1. Dark Fantasy

I've been impressed several times by the forumers' response to this album (I do myself love it). After relistening to it, I still believe it's an amazing work of production, but Kanye's lyricism is really, really shaky. Given the results of the album in the current critics lists of greatest albums ever, I would not be surprised if one day MBDTF overtook "It Takes a Nation" as the most acclaimed hip-hop album, but I believe it would be undeserved: Public Enemy combine both a fantastic production and absurdly good lyrics, and deserve their spot. In fact, if I thought it over seriously, I believe there would be half a dozen hip-hop albums I would put ahead of MBDTF as the greatest ever.

2. Freddie Freeloader
3. Blue in Green

All of the songs on this album are very enjoyable. The middle three are very close to my ears.

To be honest, the five tracks are incredibles :
4. All Blues
1. So What
3. Blue in Green
2. Freddie Freeloader
5. Flamenco Sketches

If I culd, I would put All Blues and So What in the first place and the other three in the second place.

Hi, jamieW, you already voted for this album in another thread (viewtopic.php?f=20&t=2104). Anyway I've edited your vote since the ranking is slightly different.

Sorry about that, Honorio! I've been going through each thread to see which albums I've already voted for, but it never occurred to me that I might've voted for one of these in a thread for another album. What's funny about "All Blues" and "Flamenco Sketches" (the two I had switched around) is that, when I listened to "Kind of Blue" again last night, I could not decide which I liked better, so I just went with the album order. I'm not sure what criteria I used to break the tie the first time!

Thanks for catching that. Today, I will go through all of the threads individually to make a list of the albums I haven't voted for yet so that it doesn't happen again.

I have only listened to two Miles Davis albums. This was the first one and I was impressed by its quality and consistency.

Later on I heard Bitches Brew and I didn’t like it, so I didn’t give him another try. When I came back to Kind of Blue today I thought that maybe I had not been fair to Davis and I have to retry with other of his albums.

First four are in a very similar level, Freddy is great, but it suffers from being a bit different.

1. So What
4. All Blues
5. Flamenco Sketches
3. Blue in Green
2. Freddie Freeloader
