Help wanted!

Post by Henrik »

March was supposed to be my working month but I have mostly been in bed with the flu so far. My whole family has been ill, and I have still not recovered actually, but at least the kids are well enough to be at kindergarten today, which makes the work a bit easier...

Anyway, I have created a spreadsheet of songs from 2010-2012 that will be included in the coming update. I would be grateful if you could help me fill in the missing information. Thanks!

Hi JWFORD and welcome to the forum!

I need someone to fill in the empty cells in column B-J, in the attached spreadsheet above.

Exceptions:
Column H is not needed for countried other than UK and US.
Column I is not needed if if the song is sung in English or it's an intrumental track.

P.S. I was a little unsure of which bands were female fronted. For example, The xx.

This might seem unimportant, but "The High Road" by Broken Bells is technically a 2009 song, and so it should have [2009] next to it. I wouldn't want to see it added in the wrong year during the AM update.

Here is a similar spreadsheet for albums. And similarly, I'd be very grateful if someone fills in the missing info!

I'm in for this one. So, if I'm reading right, you need:

Column B for 2011 and 2012 albums.
Column D for 2010 albums.
Column G.
Column H for US artists.
Columns I and J where applicable (Henrik, just a "Y" in column J?)

Also, you have Song instead of Album as the heading for Column D. I can change that.

Thanks Harold! If you can do column H for UK artists as well (England/Wales/Scotland/Northern Ireland) that would be great.

Sure thing. Quick question: how do you want the lists for each year sorted once both artist columns are completed - by column D (which would be my guess) or column B? Thanks!

"Pyramids" is most definitely on the songs spreadsheet, which is higher up in this thread. You may be looking at the albums spreadsheet (the albums column was mislabeled as songs when Henrik initially uploaded it).

The missing information has been added to the 2010-2012 albums spreadsheet. A couple of notes:

*The only album here, I believe, whose vocals are non-English (give or take a couple of tracks on the M83 album) is Ali & Toumani, and I cannot for the life of me remember what language(s) they are in (French? Bambara?). I don't feel like digging out my copy, and trying to look it up was no help at all (thanks, Internet!). I put a question mark in the column, and anyone is welcome to fill it in.

*Several acts - Kylesa, Salem, Low, The xx, and of course David Byrne & St. Vincent - are co-fronted by men and women. I put "Yes" in the Female-Fronted column to reflect that.

*I think most people consider Scott Walker to be both a USA and a UK artist, but I'm happy to give Ohio sole claim to him if you'd like to keep it that way.

*Please feel free to suggest any corrections you may see fit. I used Wikipedia to fill out the State column, for the most part.

Several 2010-2012 albums that had 30 or more points on their respective EOY spreadsheets do not appear on Henrik's list for the update, undoubtedly owing to their relatively poor ratings from other sources (Metacritic, AMG) - which aligns quite well with my own spectacularly unscientific predictions posted in another thread. You'd need to go all the way down to #176 on my list - World, You Need a Change of Mind - to find the first album that won't be included in the update.

Here are the albums in question:

2010:
Broken Bells - Broken Bells (36)
Mumford & Sons - Sigh No More (31) [2009 album]

2011:
Peaking Lights - 936 (33)
Beyoncé - 4 (33)
Panda Bear - Tomboy (30)
Katy B - On a Mission (30)

2012:
Kindness - World, You Need a Change of Mind (36)
Mark Lanegan Band - Blues Funeral (32)

How is "Kill for Love" by Chromatics a 2011 song? I can't find any information supporting that, but that's what it's listed as on the spreadsheet.

I actually have another question in regards to the spreadsheet-

Why is it that a song like "Love the Way You Lie" by Eminem, which is ranked number 38 on the 2010 EOY songs spreadsheet with a total of 41 points not going to be added in the next update, but a song like "Rill Rill" by Sleigh Bells, which is ranked number 67 on the 2010 EOY songs spreadsheet with a total of 28 points is going to be added?

Not that I have a particular problem with this- I've never really cared for "Love the Way You Lie", while I think "Rill Rill" is a fantastic song. But I'm just curious. Have there been enough new EOY song lists for 2010 taken into account on the recent "songs to be added spreadsheet" that were never taken into account on the original 2010 EOY songs spreadsheet?

Nick, good question. The reason is that the spreadsheet on the website has unfortunately not been updated after I added another eligibility criterion - to have at least 10 album reviews per month. "Love the Way You Lie" was included on no less than four lists that are now ineligible; MTV, New York Post, Rhapsody and The Sun.

I have a spreadsheet with the ineligible lists removed. It's cluttered with some other information so I need to clean it up before I can upload it. Anyway, in this spreadsheet "Love the Way You Lie" is #60 and "Rill Rill" is #66. Furthermore, "Rill Rill" was released as a music video but not as a single so it made its way to #66 even though some EOY lists only included singles.

Hi Harold, I tried -unsuccessfully I must admit- to find out what languages were used for the album "Ali & Toumani"...I just found this very detailed article about Ali Farka Touré on a site called www.afrisson.com (a site I recommend that I recommend for any lovers of African Music...) It's written in french, but I'm sure you would decipher most of it...Or use a translating device on internet like "reverso"...At the beginning of the third paragraph, the author claims that A.F.Touré came from an "agricultural region in Niafounké, 250 km south west of Tombouctou, Mali...that is rich with different languages/dialects called songhaï, peule, tamachek, bambara, zarma, malinké…Later on, A.F.Touré included several traditional songs on his grammy winning albums that could be sung in several of these different languages...
I know, it's a bit of a headache trying to know which language is used on any specific song, but well, luckily the beauty of his guitar licks are universal, aren't they? Hope this not too confusing...
