I suppose this is politically incorrect these days, like the Bugs Bunny cartoon when he's an ice cream man and an Asian comes by and Bugs says "here you are, slant eyes."

It is definitely incorrect, although not particularly malicious. That's the best I can say about it. I know you don't care about it, but for me it contains on of the most stupid lines I have heard in this game yet: "I went to Chinatown/ Way back in old Hong Kong." A Chinatown in Hong Kong, really?

I get that the whole song isn't meant to be taken serious, but there is a line between appealing silliness and embarassing silliness, but this song, through its lyrics crosses over in the bad side. The rhythm and vocals aren't bad at all, but I can't shut out the words.

What about something like this, where she says "I'd rather my man would hit me, then for him to jump up and quit me." "I swear I won't call no copper, if I'm beat up by my papa."

Would that make you drop the rating of this record?

Damn, I love this man's voice. The song itself is not even all that special, but I can't deny it is pleasant to bask in the warmth of Lanegan's tones for a few minutes.

The lyrics make me uneasy, yes. It's very weird too, as the 'Ain't nobody's business if I do' is of course of an expression of individual freedom and inthe first half the lyrics reflect this. Then all of a sudden she uses it to declare that she doesn't mind having an abuse partner and father, as well as that she apparently gets strength out of giving all her money to the man of the house. It's odd and that the song is written by men for women to sing makes it creepy. It makes you wonder how performers like Billie Holiday and Bessie Smith felt about these lines.

Unfortunately in these eras some women thought that they deserved to be hit if they did something wrong.

795. Mark Lanegan - One Hundred Days: 6/10

Regarding the discussion above: In my search for 1962 songs I happened upon The Crystals' "He Hit Me (And It Felt Like a Kiss)", written by Carole King. The title already states pretty well what the entire song is about; my face when I saw it looked a bit like this:

Oh I know and I sadly also know that some still do. And it's fine that music tries to deal with these themes, but I don't think Ain't Nobody's Business does a good job of it.

When she says "Papa" she's not talking about her father, she's talking about her man. In those days black women referred to their man as "Daddy" or "Papa."

James Brown's "Papa Don't Take No Mess." In it he sings:

But when we did wrong
Papa beat the hell out of us

The record was a big hit, by the way. Top 30 on the Billboard pop chart at a time before R&B records were making that chart much, and it peaked at #5 on the Billboard R&B chart.

Some big, clean riffs and Ozzy Osbourne wailing: the type of Black Sabbath I like the most. Too bad about the abrupt ending, but I guess this was never meant as a standalone song.

As much as I don't want to be into Godfearing Biblical songs, I can't deny the dark delight of Johnny Cash announcing the end of time. Even though the effect of his age on his voice is more than clear, it still sounds awesome.

The Fratellis - Lupe Brown 7
2Pac - So Many Tears 5

The Five Keys - Ling Tong Song 5 Not to stir the pot but is there really any difference between this and Hong Kong Garden from a time when Siouxsie Sioux really should have known better, regardless of intended shock value? Yes, there is- The Five Keys song would never trouble my all-time songs list :D
Hymie wrote: Mon Mar 15, 2021 6:23 pm In those days black women referred to their man as "Daddy"
Many still do in current rap/R&B- having not listened to the song you linked, I'd imagine that's its least jarring aspect for a modern audience!

Mark Lanegan - One Hundred Days 6
Black Sabbath - Hole in the Sky 6 Symptom of the Universe and The Writ from the same album are cast-iron 8s
Johnny Cash - The Man Comes around 10 A song as beautiful as you was never meant for this thread, oh AT#215 as of my last full update (albeit likely to drop somewhat when I submit my ballot this year).
The Blue Nile - Let's Go out Tonight 3
All I got inside is vacancy!
