Biggest Fan Songs - March 2021

Post by Rob »

Welcome to the March 2021 edition of Biggest Fan. Let me explain for those who only join now. It's about those songs that only got one vote in our recent All-Time Best Song Poll. There were over 13.000 of them! That's too much to get collectively into, but through this series we are going to introduce you to one of them every day. A randomly selected song, so you never know what you're gonna get.

There is also a game element, to make things more interactive. You can give a grade to each song, from 1 (for the worst of them) to 10 (the masterpieces). A 0 will be counted as a 1. Every 100 days I will calculate the average grades and post the current top 100. At the end of each year I'll post the whole list as is.

Some points of note:
- A topic for each song would be a little much, but all songs in one topic too. That's why I make monthly new topics for the entries of that month.
- There will be links to old topics in each new one, so you can easily go back. Once we have collected a decent amount of songs, I will also post a topic with all the songs listed and a link to their initial appearance.
- There is gonna be a Spotify playlist (see below). Each new song will be put atop of the playlist! If songs aren't on Spotify there will be a link to YouTube or any platform it's available on. I will contact the biggest fan through a message if I can't find the song anywhere.
- You can always still vote for each song, even months later. Just go to the right topic.
- You can always change your grade. Again, place it in the right topic.
- You don't have to vote for each song if you don't want to.
- I think this goes without saying but still: always name the artist and title of the song you vote for. I'm not going to guess for which song you vote.
- Comments on the song are more than welcome. Nobody is probably going to review them all, but if you have something to say, please do.
- I know some wanted to go faster. Two songs a day, 10 songs a week, something like that. I'm decided against this, because I wanted to keep it small. We can't deal with over 13.000 songs, so I'm not trying. I just want to give you all one small discovery (or re-discovery) for the day. We'll never get all these songs done before the next All Time Song poll rolls along, but we can have fun getting there.
- I'll try to get each new song up soon after awakening, so in most cases it should be here relatively early.
- Feel free to ask questions or make general comments about this poll if you think it could be better.

You can still vote for the songs of earlier months, but please so do that in it's own topic.

Fazerdaze – Lucky Girl: 7

Bright and warm indie pop. Like yesterday's lovestruck protagonist from Bubbly is getting energetic.

Miley Cyrus – The Floyd Song (Sunrise): 5

This song's parent album was so badly received I almost dreaded this. The Floyd Song isn't all that bad turns out, just not very engaging and too drawn-out. For some reason I expected some failed experimental stuff. Everything about this album and its promotion screamed try-hard to me at the time, but at least this song isn't that.

Confirms once again why I have such a deep dislike of anything Janet Jackson. This sounds more like inertia than music to me.

I don't think this will make the songs list I'm making right now. It's a song I have great fondness for, especially in connection with the Footrot Flats movie, but it's a bit too much.

Here's the song in the movie's context

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJOWpEBz ... icalCortex

Dave Dobbin, featuring Ardijah - You Ought Be in Love: 4

The song is too much eighties schmaltz for me to be enjoyed on its own. Seeing it in context makes clear that this is at least partially on purpose as the song is used in contrast to the characters scruffy appearance and location. Sadly, I have no familiarity with Footrot Flats in anyway, so any nostalgia does not apply and it is hard to like this song enough by itself.

785. Lou Reed – Metal Machine Music, Pt. 2 - 4 - it's not THAT bad. I've actually heard far worse as far as noise improv is concerned. That said, it's more an atmosphere than a song...and to be fair, this grates on me far less than Dave Dobbyn...

Finally ending the bad streak that's been going on for longer than a week. This is not bad at all, it's actually pretty nice and doesn't deserve its bad reputation.

The country has been in lockdown for months now and it is starting to grate on everyone, including myself. Today, however, I felt inspired to reach out to my fellow humans. I opened the window. It was a bit chilly, but sunny. I turned up the volume and let Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music, Part 2 chime over the streets of Nijmegen. The neighbors in my street quickly opened their windows to see what was happening. People on the streets looked up to my window. Then the magic happened. It seemed like everybody could tap into the vibe of the music from the metal machine. Everybody swayed to the tune and for about 15 minutes everyone felt like they were together for the first time in forever; forgetting all about the lockdown.

Alright that never happened, though now I wished I tried.

Lou Reed - Metal Machine Music, Pt. 2: 3

This is not as extreme as I remembered. Around 2010 or so I read an article about it and intrigued I started the parent album, but didn't get far into the first track, which I remember as some of the most insufferable sounds in the world. By now I heard worse, although that isn't much of an endorsement for the "song" at hand. Having heard some noise music since it is a little easier to appreciate it as influential, but the problem is that never for a second I believe Reed is doing something other than creating random sounds. Nothing develops or is revealed in the process. I get Spiritualized's comment that it is more about atmosphere, but I don't really get that all that much from this either. It never becomes more than a rather ugly collage of metallic sounds. I agree with Schüttelbirne that the last few days of this game haven't been exactly great, but for me this doesn't break the lull.

For people who like this, you will be happy to learn that the other three parts are also still candidates for this game. If the Random Gods are willing we might get them all before the end of the next all-time poll.

Also I really enjoy the tonal whiplash of this very lovely song, then MMM, then the complete schmoozefest of the song after. Only on Biggest Fan...

Speaking of which, I feel less cruel to MMM despite the fact that listening to it still gives me radiation sickness:

787. Christine and the Queens - Tilted
Year: 2015*
Album: Chaleur humaine/ Christine and the Queens (US title)
Biggest Fan: StevieFan13 (#292)

*I am aware that this song was already released in 2014 in French and across much as Europe as a French language song named Christine, but since StevieFan13 mentioned specifically the English version I go with that one’s release date, 2015. AM ranks both versions at #3231.
