Re: Song List Special #6: Whuntva

Post by Honorio »

Sixth list. Many songs familiar to me but a lot of unknowns songs to me, most of them from grunge and 90s rock (both mainstream or alternative), a style that I suspect that I respect more than I like. But let listen to the songs and we will see.

Top 10 of unknown songs:
18. Alice in Chains | Nutshell: the only thing I ever listened from Alice in Chains is the album "Dirt." This 1994 song is very good, slowly building from an acoustic intro to an electric crescendo, with a remarkable guitar solo near the end of the song. Not too original though, other 90s alternative bands were approaching classic rock on those times.
30. Powderfinger | These Days: first time ever that I hear a song from this band. The song is not bad, melodic pop-rock with maybe too 90s archetypical quiet-loud-quiet structures alternating clean and distorted guitars.
32. Muse | Knights of Cydonia: sorry, Whuntva, but this band is not my cup of tea. Although I acknowledge that they know how to write a good melody and make it sound really big, I'm afraid that I can't stand their grandiosity. And this song is not only an exception but maybe one of their most overblown songs.
34. Tool | Lateralus: prog-metal is by no means my favourite style so I was not expecting to like what I was going to listen. But I was wrong, I found the song very interesting, especially when I read the comments about the song on Wikipedia. A song that mold the rhythmic patterns and the syllabes on the lyrics on Fibonacci sequence and the Golden Spiral and bases the lyrics on North American aborigins, LSD experiences, alchemy and Hermeticism is at least something that deserves to be listened paying attention.
38. Faith No More | Epic: rap-metal is by no means my favourite style so I was not expecting to like what I was going to listen. But I was wrong, I found the song quite interesting, it sounds still fresh after all these years despite being a style quite dated now. Especially the vocals and the keyboards sounded quite original to me retrospectively. And I loved the piano coda.
48. Eagles | Take It to the Limit: mmm, good old 70s classic rock in the middle of these 90s-00s rock songs. I like it, the trademark vocal harmonies, the guitar licks between verses, the country-rock flavours, the soft drumming. Nothing to object, I like 70s soft-rock. A lot.
49. Dream Theater | Pull Me Under: another interesting sample of prog-metal. And a good one, I liked the sound of the guitar arpeggio on the song intro, the drumming (drumming is usually the thing I like the most on metal music) and the abrupt ending.
54. Muse | Starlight: as I told on my previous comment about Muse, they know how to make a good melody (and this one is really beautiful) but I can't help to see them as the last step down on a declining ladder of the epic-driven alternative rock that begins with Radiohead (The Bends-era), follows with Coldplay (A Rush of Blood to the Head-era) and ends with Muse (Black Holes and Revelations-era). Every follower copies the previous but every time with less freshness and originality.
64. Incubus | Drive: another band I never heard before, with this typically late 90s-early 00s sound in a middle point between mainstream and alternative rock, with these grunge-like vocal melodies but with softer arrangements.
66. Snow Patrol | Chasing Cars: sorry, Whuntva, but I didn't like that one too. Maybe Muse was not the last one on the declining ladder I told before, this band could be another step down.

And the next 15:
69. Linkin Park | In the End
70. Deftones | Change (In the House of Flies)
73. Nine Inch Nails | Head Like a Hole
75. Nirvana | You Know You're Right
82. Cryoshell feat. Niels Brinck | Gravity Hurts
83. Stone Sour | Through Glass
86. Tool | Stinkfist
87. Screaming Trees | Nearly Lost You
88. Gotye | Hearts a Mess
90. Default | Wasting My Time
93. Finger Eleven | Paralyzer
94. Editors | All Sparks
99. Dream Theater | As I Am
100. Stone Temple Pilots | Plush
101. Kasabian | Days Are Forgotten

The next 15 got a lot of WGWG (White Guys With Guitars) mainly from the late 90s-early 00s. As I guessed that's a style I respect more than I actually like, even if I liked quite a lot some of these 15 songs, especially the ones by Deftones, Nine Inch Nails, Screaming Trees and Editors. And I wanted to point to Nirvana's "You Know You're Right," a song I never heard of but I just learned from Wikipedia that it was one of the last songs Cobain recorded with Nirvana that ignited a long legal battle between Coutney Love and former Nirvana members Crist Novoselic and Dave Grohl. An excellent song that gives an indication of what if...
So another pleasant Sunday with another AM list. Even if my comments about the unknown songs could make you think otherwise, I liked your list a lot, Whuntva. Rock is obviously the predominant style on it (just like on many of our lists) and there is nothing wrong with it. Rock is the favourite style of almost everyone here, in fact rock is what took us to Acclaimed Music. Within a few years you realize that there is a lot of non-rock good music out there. At least it was my case, that can explain our not too high correlation (9,6%, 24/250 songs, the same as with Henry).
Many thanks Whuntva for your list!

[quote="Honorio"]Sixth list. Many songs familiar to me but a lot of unknowns songs to me, most of them from grunge and 90s rock (both mainstream or alternative), a style that I suspect that I respect more than I like. But let listen to the songs and we will see.

Top 10 of unknown songs:
18. Alice in Chains | Nutshell: Alice in Chains never completely won me over. This song is one of my favorites from Alice in Chains. The mellow acoustic background works well with the pleasant vocals and the guitar which is quite entertaining without overpowering the song.
32. Muse | Knights of Cydonia: I'm a fan of Muse and expect that in time I will like them even more. After listening again to this song, I am confident that it will be in my favorites of all time list - which will probably grow to 5000 songs at this rate :-)
34. Tool | Lateralus: Tool has some moments where they captivate me, but generally I am not a fan of heavy metal unless the vocals have some melodic qualities and the guitar is particularly impressive. I did not find enough of either of these qualities in this Tool song. But, this song was worth listening to and there were some nice portions where the drums and guitars kicked in to a very nice energetic groove.
48. Eagles | Take It to the Limit: My 267th all-time favorite.
49. Dream Theater | Pull Me Under: On my favorite list at 4025 in large measure because it was on your list. Thanks!
54. Muse | Starlight: Another Muse song that will likely make my all-time favorites list next time. This song has some nice catchy parts and I would guess it will place higher than the Knights song on my next list, but we'll see.
64. Incubus | Drive: This song is a grower for me. I'm not as taken in by Incubus as a I am by Muse, but this song could also move into my fave list.
66. Snow Patrol | Chasing Cars: Makes my faves list at 2544.
Hopefully, I'll have time to provide comments on the next 15 before the end of the day

I thought that Moonbeam's Song List idea was great. But, it seems to have zero momentum lately.

Almost a month later than I thought I have now started to listen to the a few of the next 15 "unknown" songs in Whuntva's list:

69. Linkin Park | In the End - Glad to see this on your list. The song was my 1181st favorite of all time. Linkin Park has some great hooks and energy. LP was also one of the first bands that my son introduced to me. Not much love for LP in the forum as far as I can tell.

70. Deftones | Change (In the House of Flies) - Nice rough edge to the song. It could be a grower for me.

73. Nine Inch Nails | Head Like a Hole - This is one of the songs that I appreciate more than enjoy.

75. Nirvana | You Know You're Right - this song works for me and is likely to enter into my all time list. I wonder if Grohl had much input into the composition and/or performance of this song. The bass and drums appear vaguely similar to some of the riffs in some Foo Fighter songs.

82. Cryoshell feat. Niels Brinck | Gravity Hurts - Another good message song. Could be a grower.

83. Stone Sour | Through Glass - Has potential, but I do not see a great chance for this to make my faves list yet. Interesting messages, music is pleasant enough.

86. Tool | Stinkfist - Not in my faves list yet, but appears to be a grower.

87. Screaming Trees | Nearly Lost You - This song rocks and is likely to be moved into my all-time faves list after a few more listens. Thanks for pointing it out.

88. Gotye | Hearts a Mess - Nice discovery for me. Has potential to make my faves list.

90. Default | Wasting My Time - Nice discovery for me. Has potential to make my faves list.

93. Finger Eleven | Paralyzer - Works for me. Could make it to my faves list.

94. Editors | All Sparks - Not my cup of tea yet. But, worth another listen or two.

99. Dream Theater | As I Am - Pretty good song. I've listened to it a few times and it has potential to grow on me.

100. Stone Temple Pilots | Plush - I enjoy this song, but not very likely that it will make my faves list.

101. Kasabian | Days Are Forgotten

I had a good time going through this list. It seems our tastes are quite different, but I've made some cool discoveries:

Muse - "Knights of Cydonia": A lot of people bash Muse to no end, but I've never really understood why. I haven't heard anything aside from one or two songs, so I went in with an open mind, and I'm glad I did! Their sound here is interesting. Do you have any particular album you'd recommend?

Dream Theater - "Pull Me Under": Another artist that I see bashed mercilessly, but I rather enjoyed this! This guitars were really good and the ambition of it was appealing rather than off-putting.

Mastodon - "Oblivion": I've been intrigued by them since they appeared on lots of AMer lists recently, but I never gave them a spin until now. Like "Pull Me Under", this seems to be a good ambassador of prog metal.

The Temper Trap - "Fader": Being in Australia, I had heard this before, but I totally forgot about it. Nice re-discovery!

Swans - "New Mind": Another band that had long intrigued me but I had yet to check out. It's got interesting shades of goth and post-punk going on, and the "scary" vibe is just a hoot!

34) Tool-Lateralus --- Always been a big Tool fan and this is one of my top 3 songs from them. They are a band that does not get a whole lot of recognition on AM but put out 3 outstanding albums that still sound great today.

110) Breaking Benjamin-I will not Bow --- Call it a guilty pleasure but I always liked BB and after listening to this again I added a bunch of Breaking Benjamin songs to a couple of my playlists at work. Mainstream hard rock has been on life support for a long time, but every once and a while there is a hidden gem.

276) You am I-Berlin Chair --- I remember playing this song on college radio and had completely forgotten about it. Downloaded it right away. Thanks for rejuvenating this one.

352) Train-Drops of Jupiter --- 1st major disappointment in this list. Not bad when you get to 352 and get your get the first song that makes you cringe.

388) Kasabian-Empire --- Lots of Kasabian, always make me happy. It's between this song & "Club Foot" for my favorite.

418) OAR-Love and Memories --- Cringe moment #2.... 440) Green Day-21 Guns #3.... 460) Don McLean-American Pie #4.... 468) The Fray-You Found Me... 464) Daughtry-Crashed #6 . Still not bad to have only 6 out of 500 of these moments.

Overall, It's a great list that is probably a little too mainstream hard rock oriented for a majority of this forum, but that is kind of a sweet spot for me. I enjoyed it. Honestly not many new discoveries, I have heard almost all of these songs before. I do have a list of 7 songs unfamiliar to me, I am planning on checking these out sometime in the next couple of weeks.

I guess Absolution. My personal favorite is Black Holes and Revelations, but really anything before that is okay, too. They start getting an electro vibe in around that time. However, they seem to have "sold out" with their most recent album. After Resistance, the magic simply goes away.

I would rank Muse albums like this :
1 - Showbiz (though it should be noted it probably is their least original one, without most of what would make what people would later consider their trademark sound)
2 - Absolution (I'd say this is the trademark Muse album : very few bad songs here, some killer riffs and basslines, and perfect drums but that's pretty much true for any Muse album, however it has several hints at how bloated their sound come become... They seem to think that putting string sections in your songs make them epic and classy but actually if you do it the wrong way it just makes them dull and pretentious. They ain't no Sufjan)
3 - Origin of Symetry (this one has some of the best Muse songs, nothing in Absolution can touch New Born or Citizen Erased, but it also has the first very bloated and pretentious songs by the band)
4 - The 2nd Law (this one has been bashed a bit too lazily by critics, it is actually quite interesting at moments, the band seem to have partially realize that their true strength was their rhythm section and that putting Matthew Bellamy pompous vocals and catastrophic string arrangements could lead to some pretty good dance tracks. The dubstep part is not interesting at all though)
5 - Black Holes & Revelations (a pretty bad album with a couple OK songs)
6 - The Resistance (terrible album, only Undiscloser Desire with its tense Depeche Mode-like mood is worth listening... it actually reminded me of Queen worst albums, United States of Eurasia giving me the same feeling of embarassment as Mustapha did for Mercury & Co)

It should be noted though that Black Holes is a lot of Muse fans favorite album (which still is a mystery to me)

I hope I will have time to browse through your list further, I am familiar with most of it and it actually feels a bit like an all time list I would have made 6 or 7 years ago (with a massive amount of "same band, different songs" of which Muse and Kings of Leon are really representative) so I'm curious to hear the songs I don't know.

It was Origin of Symetry which got me hooked on Muse, but Absolution is their crowning achievement. Time Is Running Out is my favourite song of theirs. I do also enjoy Black Holes & Revelations, but The Resistance was a huge step into mediocrity.

I still have to look closely at these all time lists, but it is great to see a list which features Muse and The Decemberists.
