The "woohoo" vocalisations really annoy me in the original, in this they are less prominent and so it does better. I don't know if I'd put the song that high even without them though.

When playing this today I immediately recognized it, but not from this version. I haven't been able to pinpoint just which rendition I do know - it has been performed a lot -, but it might be the one by Erykah Badu with Robert Glasper.
Regardless, it is a very good song, with an appealing melody and lyrics that help create a humid atmosphere. Abbey Lincoln's vocals are great. I knew her from her fierce performance on Max Roach' We Insist album, but this is something else.

Although I remember this being on the radio a lot in 2007, if you would have asked me to date the song I would probably have went with the early nineties. For some reason Lenny Kravitz in 2007 must have thought the time was right for a revival of the sound of Bryan Adams. It could have been worse. The song is rather sappy, but I like the string parts.

Many of the songs on the album are very cheesy and sentimental, but not this one. It's makes the best of N'Dour's voice and it has great rhythm.

Huh, always when this song title appeared somewhere I thought it was another song, namely Don't Cha by The Pussycat Dolls. This because of the line "Don't cha wish your girlfriend was a freak like me?" I very well remember that one being a hit. Apparently I must have been aware of the Sugababes song too, but although I recall their other hits quite well, this one doesn't sound all that familiar. Probably because it isn't all that catchy, despite the Gary Numan hook. I think the Numan link is also why critics seem to like this much more than their other songs. It's not by any stretch, but it also doesn't seem to do all that much.

Freak Like Me is an easy 10 for me!

I know this song from the Gloria Gaynor version, which of course came later. Her disco take is very different to Isaac Hayes. Apparently the Jackson 5 did it first. The contrast in voice between young Michael Jackson and Isaac Hayes is as night and day, but I definitely prefer Hayes and I do like how he turns it into a very slow, smoldering song.
