Great albums after an extended hiatus

Post by Jackson »

The positive reception to m b v got me thinking...what other artists have come up with an acclaimed album after more than a decade break between releases?

A few examples I can think of are:

Portishead - Third (11 years after their s/t)
Swans - My Father Will Guide Me Up a Rope to the Sky (14 years)
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Allelujah! Don't Bend! Ascend! (10 years)
Bill Fay - Life is People (41 years - this has to be the winner)

Vashti Bunyan - 35 years (previous record holder before Bill Fay, probably - them British folkie types do like to take their time)

Scott Walker - The Drift

Tilt would also apply, but I haven't listened to it so can't speak to whether it's great.

This is a list of albums that I like (not necessarily "acclaimed" by critics or public) and without considering compilations, bootlegs and live albums:

Booker T. Jones - Potato Hole - 2009 - (That's the Way It Should Be, 1994): 15 years
George Harrison - Brainwashed - 2002 - (Cloud Nine, 1987): 15 years
Joe Walsh - Analog Man - 2012 (Songs for a Dying Planet, 1992): 20 years
Madness - Wonderful - 1999 - (Mad Not Mad, 1985): 14 years
The Beach Boys - That's why God Makes the Radio - 2012 (Stars and Stripes, Vol 1, 1996): 16 years
The Db's - Falling off the Sky - 2012 (Paris Avenue, 1994): 18 years
The Primitives - Never Kill a Secret (EP) - 2011 - (Galore, 1992): 19 years
The Vaselines - Sex with an X - 2010 - (Dum Dum, 1989): 21 years
Willie Wright - This is Not a Dream - 2012 (Telling the Truth, 1977): 35 years

Portishead's Third was the greatest comeback I experienced in music so far.

Steely Dan - 20 years between Gaucho and Two Against Nature.
I hope that Avalanches will give as an opportunity to mention them here soon...
