Songs of 2013

Post by Chambord »

Topic for tracks with great chances to end up in our next personal EOY Songs Top (as well as the critics lists)

2 that got my attention so far:

Unknown Mortal Orchestra - So Good At Being In Trouble

The Cribs - Leather Jacket Love Song (this one has a strong strokes-y feel to it, i tend to like it more than the real Strokes' track that surfaced recently)

Primal Scream just dropped their new single "2013." Given that it features Kevin Shields, I was expecting it to sound a little crazier (like XTRMNTR, one of my favorite albums). But I bet the full 9-minute version's better, and it sounds like the upcoming album could be worthwhile.

I love albums, but usually I take more interest in separate songs. And recently I have started a blog (written in portuguese, since I'm from Brazil, but still people can listen to the songs) with the songs I think were the highlights of given period. I started with a January post, and my friends told me it was nice, so I will start doing it weekly! I Started with the first half of February and now I'll release a post weekly.
So, if someone takes an interest, here it goes: http://muchitmatters.wordpress.com

Zedd got together with Foxes for the emotional dance/ballad "Clarity". This song really rocks, i love it, such a breath of fresh air.

The Knife - A Tooth for an Eye is easily the best I have heard so far this year. Fantastic tune, her voice, the asian rhythms and textures, i believe it's in 12/8!, giving it a really interesting feel. What an incredible return to form.

I like Full of Fire a bit more but yeah, if it's any indication, their album is gonna be fantastic.

Vampire Weekend - Step
"Vampire Weekend feel, uncannily, unstuck in time. If they were a movie they'd be the kind where it doesn't occur to you until an hour in to ask yourself whether it's set in the present day or the past; if they were four feet tall you could probably have an entire conversation without being sure if you were talking to a precocious child or an unusually small adult." 4 months in and I have to say- my favorite song of 2013 by a LONG shot is "Only Tomorrow" by My Bloody Valentine. That guitar riff for the last 3 minutes of the song is heavenly. In fact, "Only Tomorrow" might even be my favorite song by My Bloody Valentine. Runners up for song of the year so far would be "Retrograde"- James Blake and "Song for Zula"- Phosphorescent.

Frigthened Rabbit - Backyard Skulls
Tegan & Sara - Not Your Hero
Allah-las - Photograph

I'm not saying that things could have worked out fine
I'm just thinking about the things we left behind
And now that what we have is gone, I want it back
When I see that photograph

This chorus with a Pavement-like off-melody and strummy echoey Animals-like guitar.
