Songs and Albums of 1980 Poll

Post by Moonbeam »

Image

In 2013, we shall peruse the depths of the greatest decade of all, the 1980s!

This month, we will start with my birth year, 1980.

So go on and post a list of your favorite songs and/or albums of 1980. Only 15 will be given points, but the more, the merrier!

Feel free to check out the recommendation thread to find out some hidden gems or share some of your own! It's a great spot for preliminary lists.

The deadline is midnight (UMT) on March 1st.

To advance to the final list, songs/albums must have a minimum of 2 votes. In case of a tie, a tie-breaker will be set up.

Please use the following format when posting your list:

Rank. Artist - Album/Song

EPs and compilations are not allowed. Quibbles about release dates will be settled by RateYourMusic.

Now get to listening and voting!

So excited to see you back! I need to listen to that Residents album ASAP.
Thanks, Jackson. To be honest I'm still very, very busy so I'm not sure if I can keep up with the pace. But I couldn't resist an 80s poll :)
About the Commercial Album, yes, that's one of my favorite records by the Residents and in a way it's also one of their most accessible. But being the Residents, be still prepared for a bumpy ride when listening to it. There are no less than 40 tracks on the album, all of 'em exactly one minute long (hence the 'commercial' tag).
Another one which might be of interest is A-Z, the solo debut by Wire-frontman Colin Newman. It's on par with the first 3 classic Wire albums.

Songs list coming soon...

Moonbeam, a couple of questions:
1- Are you going to set up the main thread, or do you want me to do it?
2- In the past, haven't we had a minimum of five albums and songs on lists? I feel like that's fair.
3- Have we officially nayed the non-Anglo quota?

1. Did we discuss this earlier? I thought you said you were doing it, but I could be wrong! Go ahead with it - I am CRAZY busy with finishing my thesis - yesterday I spent 18 straight hours on it.
2. Yeah, I guess a minimum of 5 is fair enough.
3. I left the non-Anglo bit out for now because it shouldn't be pertinent to the lists people make. I still say no, since both you and I have quibbles with it. But if there is more of a call to do it, we can still implement it.

1- Alright, I'll probably post that some time tomorrow.
3- Works for me. Hopefully if people are calling for the rule, they will be voting for the music anyway, which will negate the purpose of it.

Good luck on that thesis!

Question for previous poll hosts re: "Brass in Pocket" by Pretenders.

The album was released in 1980, but the single seems to have been released in 1979. Ineligible?

I just took a look at the excel sheet from the poll and "Brass in Pocket" wasn't on there, so I would assume it was. On RYM the single is listed as 1979, so it should be ineligible.
We should add to the recommendation thread a list of songs that were released a before their albums, so good songs that were released earlier than the album will get proper recognition in the poll.

I won't be able to vote a lot in the 80s, but I hope to find some gems because of this poll.

I agree. "The Great Curve" is currently my #1 song from this year, it's a shame it gets overlooked because of "Once in a Lifetime" and the other great songs on that album.

"The Great Curve" easily trounces "Once in a Lifetime". I have no idea why "Once in a Lifetime" is so beloved - it's easily my least favorite on Remain in Light.

I love both songs, but "The Great Curve" is on a different planet from anything else the Heads ever put out (in my opinion). The guitars, the bongos, the cool background vocals. It all works perfectly.

Looks like "The Great Curve" will make it--it's definitely my #1 for the year too. To me it's the background vocals that make the song, especially when the various parts all come together at the end. But that's no shot at "Once in a Lifetime", which is a glorious single that's also in my all-time top 100.

Interesting that nj not only offered up a list, but even posted a songs list. How times have changed around here. I also miss Tremolo, he always offered up good lists.

On another note, I haven't seen this many people post long lists since we went through the 60s. Wow! I am very ignorant about the 80s but hoping to change that.

I've mapped out '80s lists for the rest of the decade, but I noticed one snag, for next year (or this year). I’m not sure how this issue plays out in a year-by-year poll like this, so I thought I’d bring up 2 songs that are either 1980 or 1981 songs depending on one’s philosophy, I suppose.

Oingo Boingo’s “Only a Lad” was originally released in 1980 on the Oingo Boingo EP, which maybe hasn’t been in print since 1980. The song was then re-recorded for the 1981 Only a Lad album, and would also certainly be the most-known version.

Generation X’s “Dancing with Myself” was originally released in 1980, and then Billy Idol re-mixed a 3:19 dance version that he released solo ("with Generation X") in 1981 – this is the hit version, and the only version of the song that the general public even believes exists.

http://www.discogs.com/viewimages?release=1113147

http://www.discogs.com/Billy-Idol-And-G ... se/4197454

I would be voting for the 1981 versions, but I'm wondering if re-recordings and remixes are considered immaterial.

Seriously no love for More Specials?
It's a great album very funny and original, starting with great reggae/ska songs and then going into unknown territories after "Stereotypes". Great influence on Blur. The last song "International Jet Set" is unlike anything I've ever heard. Pop? disco? reggae? funk?

I think we usually consider remixes as a different song for the yearly poll (but as the same song for the all time polls I'd say).
Re-recordings I'm pretty sure we never take into account, the first release date is the right one.

I don't agree on the re-recordings part. In the 1950-60 poll, re-recordings were allowed. I don't see why they wouldn't be eligible. They are new recordings.
Sometimes re-recordings are a completely different version of the original. I only have blues and country examples that won't be very meaningful here (like the 1954 rerecording of "Blue Moon of Kentucky" by Bill Monroe that is far superior to the original) but I'm sure there are other examples in rock and more contemporary records.
That's even the case of some live recordings.
I think we should be flexible on recordings...

I was under the impression that the polls used the same system the acclaimedmusic.net uses; all versions of a song are considered to be one under the first year they were released. For example, "Radio Free Europe" was first released in 1981, and then re-recorded for "Murmur" and released again in 1983. The song is only eligible for 1981, however.

Well, in fact it depends on the person who rules the poll. Those secondary rules are up to the poll manager.

7. U2 - Boy
8. Bruce Springsteen - The River
9. X - Los Angeles
10. Motorhead - Ace of Spades
11. David Bowie - Scary Monsters
12. AC/DC - Back In Black
13. Elvis Costello - Get Happy!!
14. The Jam - Sound Affects
15. The Police - Zenyatta Mondatta
Good list, but a lot of these albums aren't from 1980. "London Calling" is 1979, "Deceit" is 1981, "Appetite for Destruction" is 1987, and "So" is 1986.

What Nick said. We have a separate poll for each year of the decade and then a combined poll with the top songs and albums from each year.
Just as a general request, could you guys make sure your top 15 albums and songs are from the proper year on RYM? It would make Moonbeam's (and my) job much easier, and then we wouldn't have to chase you down and ask for a revised list.
