Song List Special #4: Listyguy

Post by Listyguy »

Here’s my unoriginal, overly-rock-oriented, joke of a list. I will admit it was a bit of a rush job because I wanted to make sure I submitted my list before a certain Hurricane Sandy hit and knocked out my power (which it did…for a week).

1. Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine
2. The Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever
3. Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
4. Otis Redding - (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay
5. Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
6. Jimi Hendrix - Little Wing
7. Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
8. U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday
9. Bob Dylan - Mr. Tambourine Man
10. Aerosmith - Walk This Way
11. The Notorious B.I.G. - Juicy

12. Queen - Don't Stop Me Now
One of the band’s lesser known songs, I only heard myself for the first time about two years ago (and I’m a pretty big Queen fan). As per usual, Freddie Mercury’s vocals are excellent (especially in the beginning of the song when it’s just him and a piano), and Brian May’s solo, though not his best, is still pretty good.

13. Bob Dylan - A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall
14. The Smiths - This Charming Man
15. Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
16. Sly and the Family Stone - Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)
17. Van Halen - Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love
18. The Rolling Stones - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
19. Tom Petty - Free Fallin'
20. Nirvana - All Apologies
21. R.E.M. - Nightswimming
22. Sly and the Family Stone - Everyday People
23. Jackson 5 - I Want You Back
24. The Who - Baba O'Riley
25. Nirvana - Heart-Shaped Box
26. The Beatles - Tomorrow Never Knows
27. Four Tops - Reach Out (I'll Be There)
28. The Cars - Just What I Needed
29. Foo Fighters - Everlong
30. The Beatles - Here Comes the Sun
31. Elton John - Rocket Man
32. Johnny Cash - Hurt
33. The Kinks - Waterloo Sunset
34. Aretha Franklin - Chain of Fools
35. The Cure - Lovesong
36. Oasis - Wonderwall
37. Free - All Right Now
38. The Doors - Riders on the Storm
39. Bruce Springsteen - Prove It All Night
40. Tom Waits - Downtown Train

41. The Notorious B.I.G. - Suicidal Thoughts
If you know the greatest rap album of all time (“Ready to Die”), you know this song. One of the reasons I love this song so much is because of the intense emotions Biggie gets across. How can you not get chills when you hear lines like “I know my mother wishes she got a f***ing abortion”?

42. Green Day - When I Come Around
43. Michael Jackson - Beat It
44. Prince - When Doves Cry
45. Bob Dylan - Shelter From the Storm
46. Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
47. Neil Young - The Needle and the Damage Done
48. The Rolling Stones - Happy
49. David Bowie – Starman

50. Johnny Cash - God's Gonna Cut You Down
Released on Cash’s posthumous album “American V”, it’s an old folk song that Rick Rubin turned into a masterpiece with song claps and electric guitar. There’s also a music video for the song that’s pretty cool too.

51. Stevie Wonder - Superstition
52. David Bowie - Changes
53. The Doors - Break On Through (To the Other Side)
54. Led Zeppelin - When the Levee Breaks
55. Green Day - Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)
56. Elvis Costello - (I Don't Want To Go To) Chelsea
57. R.E.M. - Drive
58. Bob Dylan - It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)
59. Pixies - Debaser
60. The Strokes - Last Nite
61. The Cure - Just Like Heaven
62. Bruce Springsteen - Jungleland
63. Love - A House is Not a Motel
64. Outkast - B.O.B.

65. Def Leppard – Animal
If you’re even a small fan of Def Leppard, chances are you’ve heard this song. For those that haven’t it’s much better than some of the group’s well-known songs. I particularly love the chorus, and the guitar fills are great as well.
(Not on Spotify, so Youtube it is)
66. Bob Dylan - Tangled Up in Blue
67. The Beatles - Across the Universe
68. Simon and Garfunkel - The Boxer
69. Bruce Springsteen - Darkness on the Edge of Town
70. Bob Dylan - Love Minus Zero/No Limit
71. John Lennon - Working Class Hero
72. The Rolling Stones - Jigsaw Puzzle
73. Radiohead - Everything In It's Right Place
74. Stevie Wonder - Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing
75. Led Zeppelin - Bron-Yr-Aur
76. Jimi Hendrix - If 6 Was 9
77. Led Zeppelin - Gallows Pole
78. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication
79. Marvin Gaye - Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)
80. The Beatles - Eleanor Rigby
81. Metallica - Welcome Home (Sanitarium)

82. Jimi Hendrix - Stone Free
Depending on what version of “Are You Experienced” you listen to, you’re probably familiar with this song. Although it wasn’t on either original release, I consider it part of the album because it was recorded at the same time as many of the songs on the album, and it was the B-side to “Hey Joe”. It’s a damn good song, and (surprise!) it’s got some killer guitar work.

83. Kiss - Black Diamond
Before you crucify me for having a Kiss song in my top 100, listen to the song. It’s not your “Rock and Roll All Nite” Kiss. It’s a better, more rock and roll oriented Kiss.

84. Nirvana - Lithium
85. The Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm
86. Sufjan Stevens – Chicago

87. Queen - Stone Cold Crazy
I remember using this song in the AM World Cup a few years ago, and not many AMers were familiar with it, but many liked it because it wasn’t the same “melodramatic, annoying” Queen they were familiar with. I personally don’t mind the melodrama, but there’s none of that in “Stone Cold Crazy”.

88. James Brown - Papa's Got a Brand New Bag
89. Pink Floyd - Welcome to the Machine
90. Radiohead - Paranoid Andriod
91. Jackie Wilson - (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher
92. Neil Young - Southern Man
93. The Rolling Stones - Can't You Hear Me Knocking
94. Don Henley - The Boys of Summer
95. Talking Heads - The Great Curve

96. Jimi Hendrix - May This Be Love
Unlike “Stone Free”, “May This Be Love” was actually on both the US and UK versions of Jimi’s debut, and got lost in the shuffle of a lot of the “bigger” tracks that were on that album. But this might be the most beautiful song (aside from “Little Wing”) that Jimi made during his too-short career.

97. Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)

98. Black Sabbath - The Wizard
A classic cut from Sabbath’s debut album, probably has the creepiest harmonica part on the planet.
(Back to Youtube…)
99. Eminem - Lose Yourself
100. David Bowie - Suffragette City
101. The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army
102. Radiohead - Karma Police

103. Queen - Keep Yourself Alive
Another early, unknown Queen track. This one, much like “Stone Cold Crazy”, is more of the straight-up rock type that the band apparently neglected later in their career.
[spotyifytrack]http://open.spotify.com/track/1m7WXN6V99NabqaKvPzSXV[/spotifytrack]

104. Public Enemy - Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos

105. The Cars - Moving in Stereo
One of the forgotten songs on the Cars’ exceptional debut album, it’s a pretty good song. It’s got an element of mystery to it that most of the album lacks. If you can’t place this song from it’s album, you may remember it from the movie Fast Times At Ridgemont High.

106. The Zombies - Time of the Season
107. Simon and Garfunkel - America
108. Pearl Jam - Alive
109. The Rolling Stones - Midnight Rambler
110. David Bowie - Rock 'N' Roll Suicide
111. U2 - Mysterious Ways
112. Led Zeppelin - Ramble On
113. Nirvana - About a Girl
114. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five - The Message
115. The Who - My Generation
116. Ray Charles - Hit the Road Jack
117. Bob Marley - One Love
118. Nirvana - Dumb
119. The Smiths - There Is a Light That Never Goes Out

128. Wilco - Jesus, Etc.
129. David Bowie - Sound and Vision
130. Eagles - New Kid in Town

135. Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
136. The Beatles - Come Together
137. Steely Dan - Reelin' in the Years
138. U2 - Desire
139. The Who - Love Reign O'er Me

140. The Stooges - Gimme Danger
I love the use of the acoustic and electric guitars in this song. The intensity the combination brings reminds me a lot of Metallica’s “Battery”.

141. Stevie Wonder - Visions
142. The Rolling Stones - Gimme Shelter
143. Bob Dylan - Buckets of Rain
144. Metallica - Battery
145. Beastie Boys – Sabatoge

146. Foo Fighters - These Days
Dave Grohl considers this the best song he ever wrote. That may be a bit extreme, but this is a damn good song. The chorus is incredibly powerful; you can hear Grohl’s emotions come out when he growls “Easy for you to say!”.

147. Bob Dylan - Ballad of a Thin Man
148. The Beatles - Let it Be
149. Van Morrison - Brown Eyed Girl
150. Led Zeppelin - Going to California
151. Tom Waits - Clap Hands
152. Nick Drake - Three Hours

154. The Lovin' Spoonful - Summer in the City
155. AC/DC - You Shook Me All Night Long
156. Jimi Hendrix - Fire
157. Elvis Presley - Suspicious Minds
158. Led Zeppelin - The Battle of Evermore
159. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Fortunate Son
160. Bob Dylan - Gates of Eden

161. Tom Petty - Mary Jane's Last Dance
Being that it was released after Tom’s prime as a single, it’s not very well known, but easily one of his best songs, and probably his best “rocker”.

162. The Ronettes - Be My Baby

163. Tom Petty - Louisianna Rain
The closing track of “Damn the Torpedoes”, it’s another Petty song that gets overlooked because (a) nobody wants to listen to Tom Petty albums and (b) songs like “Refugee” and “Don’t Do Me Like That” get more publicity than this gem.

164. Bob Marley - Three Little Birds
165. Blondie - Hanging on the Telephone
166. The Lovin' Spoonful - Do You Believe in Magic?
167. Duran Duran - Hungry Like the Wolf
168. Led Zeppelin - In My Time of Dying

175. Queen - Killer Queen
176. The Velvet Underground - Heroin
177. The Doors - The Crystal Ship
178. The Beatles - For No One
179. Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing
180. Bob Marley - Redemption Song
181. Otis Redding - Satisfaction
182. Bob Dylan - Masters of War

201. The Stooges - I Wanna Be You Dog

206. Stevie Wonder - Sir Duke
207. Bruce Springsteen - Atlantic City
208. Tom Petty - Refugee
209. Soft Cell - Tainted Love
210. Nirvana - Pennyroyal Tea
211. Elvis Costello - Pump It Up
212. John Lennon - Happy X-Mas (War is Over)

213. Aerosmith - Home Tonight
The closing track on the masterful “Rocks”. Another song with a chorus that I really love.

214. The Beatles - I Want You (She's So Heavy)
215. Nirvana - Lake of Fire
216. Sly and the Family Stone - Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey

222. Fleetwood Mac - Go Your Own Way
223. Pixies - Hey
224. Kiss - Shout it Out Loud
225. Joy Division - She's Lost Control
226. Jimi Hendrix - Bold as Love
227. Queen - Under Pressure
228. Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe

229. Grand Funk Railroad - Bad Time
This song is kind of sappy, so if that’s not your style, you probably won’t like this song. I’m not a big fan of Grand Funk, but this song is damn good.

230. Bob Dylan - Simple Twist of Fate
231. Bruce Springsteen - Cover Me
232. Nick Drake - From the Morning
233. R.E.M. - The One I Love
234. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Have You Ever Seen the Rain?

241. Prince - The Cross
242. The Rolling Stones - Bitch
243. Pearl Jam - Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town
244. Heart - Crazy on You

245. Bruce Springsteen - Because the Night
Bruce played this song live a lot after giving it to Patti Smith, and although those versions are good, the version from 2010’s “The Promise” is exceptional, especially because it’s basically a demo tape.

246. Jimi Hendrix - 1983…(A Merman I Should Turn to Be)
247. Buffalo Springfield - For What It's Worth
248. Prince - Let's Pretend We're Married
249. The Notorious B.I.G. - Things Done Changed
250. Santana - Smooth
251. U2 - Bullet the Blue Sky
252. Def Leppard - Bringin' On the Heartbreak

286. Green Day - Welcome to Paradise
287. Led Zeppelin - Rock and Roll
288. Pearl Jam - Even Flow
289. The Velvet Underground - Venus in Furs

290. Deep Purple - Hush
Deep Purple in the 60’s were a different band than the one that gave us “Smoke on the Water” (which by the way, doesn’t hold a candle to this song). “Hush” has no overlong guitar solos, nor obnoxious organ solos (the organs in this song work very well).

291. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Green River
292. R.E.M. - The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite
293. Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out
294. Bruce Springsteen - Downbound Train

302. Michael Jackson - Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough
303. Bruce Springsteen - Badlands
304. Jimi Hendrix - Little Miss Strange

305. Grand Funk Railroad - I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home)
This is the last Grand Funk song, I promise. I warn you, this one is 10 minutes long (but a quality 10 minutes). The “I’m You Captain” half is much better than the “Closer to Home” half, which ultimately brought down the song’s position on my list.

306. Jimi Hendrix - Long Hot Summer Night
307. Stevie Wonder - As
308. Nirvana - Polly
309. Billy Joel - The Stranger
310. Elton John - Bennie and the Jets

397. Cream - White Room
398. The White Stripes - Icky Thump

399. Johnny Cash - Thirteen
On Cash’s original “American” album from 1994, one of the darker songs of the set.

This song’s presence on my list gives 100% credit to Moonbeam.

430. Neil Young - Cinnamon Girl
431. AC/DC - Let Me Put My Love Into You
432. The Rolling Stones - Parachute Woman
433. Michael Jackson - Man in the Mirror
434. Jeff Buckley - Dream Brother
435. The Beatles - Blackbird

436. Rise Against - Prayer of the Refugee
Rise Against are one of the few bands that my friends listen to that I can tolerate. And even them I can barely tolerate, because they have a number of screamo songs. However, they also have pretty good songs, such as this one.

482. The Beatles - Love You To
483. Van Halen - I'm the One
484. The Rolling Stones - Start Me Up
485. Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit
486. Yes - Roundabout
487. The Strokes - New York City Cops
488. Blue Oyster Cult - Burnin' For You
489. The Clash - Rock the Casbah
490. John Mellencamp - Crumblin' Down
491. Tom Petty - Don't Do Me Like That
492. Metallica - Sad But True
493. Fleetwood Mac - Landslide
494. The Beatles - The End
495. Bad Company - Can't Get Enough
496. Radiohead - Airbag
497. Johnny Cash - I See a Darkness
498. The Police - Every Breath You Take
499. Steve Miller Band - Fly Like an Eagle
500. Bruce Springsteen - She's the One

Other Songs I’d Like to Highlight
I’ve been listening to a lot of albums from 1980 lately to prepare for the start of the decade poll, and I’ve discovered some great songs that would have cracked my top 500 had I known about them when I submitted my list. Here are a few that you may not know that are great:

Dire Straits – Expresso Love
I actually knew this song before the poll, yet I somehow neglected to place it in my top 500. The guitar-piano combination is amazing, especially during the intro.

U2 – Twilight
Dwarfed by “I Will Follow”, “Twilight” is my pick for the best song on U2’s debut. Anybody agree?

Nic Jones – “Canadee-I-O”, “The Humpback Whale” and “Farewell to the Gold”
Nic Jones is a British folk artist whose lack of publicity and respect is disturbing to me. His 1980 album “Penguin Eggs” (which I highly recommend listening to for the 1980 poll) is a work of brilliance. The best of the three songs above is “Canadee-I-O”, an Irish folk song that Jones made into one of the greatest acoustic guitar performances I’ve ever heard.

Thanks for joining the fray Listguy I enjoyed your list.

I am not surprised that I found a few songs on your list that I had not heard before and found enjoyable:

So far the highlights in terms of discoveries include:

Kiss - Black Diamond,
Tom Petty - Mary Jane's Last Dance

Some of the songs you pointed out that are already in my favorites list include:
Queen - Don't Stop Me Now (1706)
Jimi Hendrix - Stone Free (4097)
Def Leppard - Animal (2624)
Grand Funk Railroad - Bad Time (621)
Deep Purple - Hush (1951)
Grand Funk Railroad - I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home) (2533)
Chicago - Saturday in the Park (751)
Eurythmics - Here Comes the Rain Again (4098)
Dire Straits - Expresso Love (2848)

I can see why you like the Nic Jones songs, but their relatively simple structure weighs against the nice clean acoustic guitar and sincere vocals. I look forward to reading the comments of other AMers regarding this artist.

I love his guitar playing, especially on "Canadee-I-O". It's truly exception (although not on the Nick Drake level of acoustic masters).
His "Penguin Eggs" album is actually ranked on AM (it's #2966 overall, #64 from 1980. To be completely honest, the only reason I gave it a chance is because I like it's name).

:music-guitarred: Now would be a great time! I believe I have 15 or 16 of Jimi's songs on my list, and they're all worth checking out. You've probably already heard most of them (like "All Along the Watchtower" and the beautiful "Little Wing"), but if your Hendrix-phobia has prevented you from listening to his albums, definitely listen to "Stone Free", "May This Be Love", "If 6 Was 9" and "1983...(A Merman I Should Turn To Be)".

I finally properly listened to Electric Ladyland (I reckon I'd like that one more), and it was far more interesting than I thought it would be. I'd heard it before, and the only things that would stick out are Little Miss Strange, Crosstown Traffic, and the last two songs. But there's so much in the middle there to stick your teeth into. 1983 and Moon, Turn the Tides are lovely and the finale is set up really well.

One thing I like about this list is that there are some really idiosyncratic picks in there. For example, it makes me so happy to see Thank You Falletinme Be Mice Elf Agin there, even though I'd never heard it before (I have now, and it's so funky!) and Queen and Juicy etc.

It's obviously a leeeeetle bit too rock-orientated for my liking, but I've still discovered some great songs. (Incidentally I first heard Free Bird for the first time in its entirety about a month ago. Crazy huh? More crazy is that I really liked it!). Sunday Bloody Sunday and the Tom Petty song will definitely be in my head over the next week.

Fourth list. And last so far, no other volunteers? sonofsamiam? nicolas? Any other? Maybe I could post mine but it remains unedited from 2007 and I don't have time rigth now to think about an in-depth update. Moreover probably most of you know every song on it (except the Spanish ones).
Great list, Listyguy, no need to be shy about it, you can be absolutely proud and not qualifying as a "joke of a list." Your list is filled by undisputed classics, by widely acclaimed songs (just like many of our lists, there is a reason for the consensus). And there's nothing wrong with that, of course. I know I'm going to sound paternalistic (not that strange, I could be your father, in fact my daughter is sixteen-years old too) but the music canon is the right place to start a music collection. Of course there are other options (see Zorg or HRS) but an intimate knowledge of the canonical names is an optimal filter for all the music to come. Because the classics are the right place to start but no the place to end. Time is on your side, you will discover a lot of great music on the years to come. And you came to the right place, the Acclaimed Music Forum!!

On every new list less unknown songs to me (with Moonbeam's I got to the Unknown Top 10 on #47, on Henry's on #76, on Zorg's on #93 and now on #161):
17. Van Halen | Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love: how was that? WGWG? White Guys With Guitars? Is there a better example of it than Van Halen? Never been a fan (in fact I only listened intentionally to "Jump" and I didn't liked it). And I usually despise the macho attitude of many late 70s and early 80s heavy metal practitioner. But, wtf, the lack of pretension in this one is quite refreshing. It's only rock and roll. And I (kinda) like it.
41. The Notorious B.I.G. | Suicidal Thoughts: well, I'm one of those who don't know this (in your opinion) greatest rap album ever, except for some singles like "Juicy." So I read the lyrics and I can't help but agree to a certain extent. Even if I think it's maybe too theatrical I aknowledge its emotional power, acting as an excellent album closer.
50. Johnny Cash | God's Gonna Cut You Down: I admit I never listened to American II and V. Now I know that it's something I need to correct. Wonderful take on a traditional tune with those hanclaps and percussion, those slides and, of course, this voice. So deep and intense sounding one foot from the grave.
55. Green Day | Good Riddance (Time of Your Life): I'm not too keen on Green Day, in fact my admiration began and ended with "Basket Case" and didn't like much "American Idiot." Anyway I found quite pleasant this 1997 ballad with acoustic guitars and strings but (sorry) not too special to my ears.
65. Def Leppard | Animal: mmm, sorry again, Listyguy, but 80s pop-metal is one of my bêtes noires. I tried to listen to it without prejudice but I'm afraid I couldn't, I didn't like the songwriting (pop at its core but with this stadium-rock singalong chorus) but even less the sound, I got problems with many productions of those days, this compressed equalization of guitars with the reverb-laden equalization of the drums. Prejudices, I know, I know.
82. The Jimi Hendrix Experience | Stone Free: I though that already knew this song (I was familiar with the title and I own the first three albums by the Experience) but I was wrong. Great Hendrix number with his usual mastery on guitar and a fabulous use of the cowbell on the drum set that gives some unexpected Latin flavours.
83. Kiss | Black Diamond: I admit I never bothered to listen to Kiss purposely (I remember only "I Was Made for Loving You Baby" because it was a huge hit when I was a teenager). "Black Diamond" encapsulates the stadium rock sound, an epic song building from an acoustic intro that includes all the gimmicks of the style and it could be used as a lesson on this kind of school. No offense intended, Listyguy, I was only joking (in fact I found the last minute of the song quite original).
98. Black Sabbath | The Wizard: the only Sabbath album I own (and the only one I listened to) is "Paranoid." I enjoyed a lot this song from their debut album, heavy metal when it was a brand new style, when it was innovative and fresh, rooted in blues-rock and psychedelia but with a menacing and (as you mention) creepy edge unseen till then. A band I should dedicate some time from now on (after Janet Jackson, Blind Faith and Modest Mouse, lol).
146. Foo Fighters | These Days: I probably listened to it during the Paz & Jop poll last year but I'm not sure. The song is very good, Dave Grohl going from alternative to classic without losing power. Great chord sequence on the chorus and good (but not too original) use of the guitars, these good-old loud-quite-loud 90s guitars.
161. Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers | Mary Jane's Last Dance: from Rick Rubin's period of Petty's career, unknown to me until last year Moderately Acclaimed Game where I could (moderately) enjoy Petty's "Wildflowers" album. Classic rock that retains a timeless charme, especially on the vocal harmonies during the chorus.

And the next 15:
213. Aerosmith | Home Tonight
218. Def Leppard | Foolin'
220. Def Leppard | Photograph
224. Kiss | Shout It Out Loud
229. Grand Funk Railroad | Bad Time
243. Pearl Jam | Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town
244. Heart | Crazy on You
245. Bruce Springsteen | Because the Night ("The Promise" version)
249. The Notorious B.I.G. | Things Done Changed
252. Def Leppard | Bringin' on the Heartbreak
263. Aerosmith | Uncle Salty
269. Def Leppard | Hysteria
271. Foreigner | Juke Box Hero
278. Boston | Peace of Mind
290. Deep Purple | Hush

Mmm, maybe too many WGWG in those last 15 (except with "Crazy on You" in which the first G is for Girls) but some scattered gems on it. I loved especially "Bad Time" by Grand Funk Railroad. I already knew a (great) cover by The Jayhawks (in fact I covered it many times with my band) but it's the first time I listen to the original that it's arguably better. "Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town," "Hush"and "Uncle Salty" were very good too. But too much Def Leppard....
So (again) another pleasant Sunday. Maybe from the comments about the unknown songs you may think I didn't like your list. But it's not true, I loved a lot of your choices, for instance you chose excellent songs by Hendrix or Dylan. It's not strange that we have a quite high correlation (12%, 30/250 songs) allthough slightly lower than Zorg's.
Sorry for talking again about your age but I'm sure that few people of your age got such a wide knowledge of rock music. It's amazing to think that you were only 13 o 14 years old when you began writing here in the Forum. Many thanks, Listyguy, and keep on rocking!

Actually, Honorio, Moonbeam has made a list in the original Song Side Project link regarding who posts their lists on which dates (1 list every 2 weeks), and I think I'm due next (beginning Tuesday). I asked to be moved down the list because I've been really busy with my final semester of school, but I know Moonbeam's been really busy lately, too (for the same reason), and probably missed the request. Therefore, I'm going to try to throw something together by Tuesday. Hopefully, though, you can post your list somewhere in the proceedings (even now, if you'd like), because I've really enjoyed your taste in music in the World Cup, and look forward to a chance to hear more of the songs on your list.

Oops, so sorry, I missed almost completely the thread about this game, I didn't know that it includes an schedule. I'm looking forward to the other lists remaining, I will try to listen to it just like I did for the first four. I wouldn't mind to participate also but probably at the end.

Honorio: Since I won't have time to post my list this week, Moonbeam has bumped up the song list thread to see if anybody would like to take my place. If you're interested, and have enough free time right now, this would be a great time to post your list.

Listyguy: I'm also still looking forward to exploring your list more over the next couple of weeks. Since I really like your entire top 10 (including 3 that made my Top 500), I'm sure that there are a lot of gems to discover. (I also noticed that you highlighted the Cars "Moving in Stereo," which is one of my all time Top 100. I was beginning to think that I was the only person in the world who loved this song!)

For me, this list has been about rediscovery of some songs I hadn't heard in a long time. A lot of them sounded brand new because of this:

The Cars - "Moving in Stereo": I agree with the mysterious tone you note, and it has now put the debut on the shortlist of albums for me to buy! Love that synth.

Deep Purple - "Hush": For some reason, I never feel compelled to check out Deep Purple, but this was a very pleasant surprise! Those organs are indeed spot on and I like the harmonies in the chorus.

Aerosmith - "Home Tonight": I don't think I've listened to Rocks in about 12 years, but this reminded me how melodic some of those tracks are. I should get back into 70s Aerosmith!

Love - "A House Is Not a Motel": Love the guitar work after the first verse and the whole song just has a great vibe. I really should revisit Forever Changes.

Jimi Hendrix - "1983...(A Merman I Should Turn to Be)": The biggest (re?)discovery for me. My CD of Electric Ladyland has always skipped after a certain point, rendering it pretty much unusable. I'm not sure whether it skipped before or after this song or not, but I will now be trying to replace my CD with haste! The whole feeling of this song is just incredible. The guitars are wonderful of course, but amazing guitar work is never enough to make me a fan of a song like this. That mournful, mysterious melody is superb and the tripped-out lyrics and awesome changes make this a standout in his career. Expect this in my list next time!
