Albums and Songs of the 1970s: Final Round

Post by Listyguy »

Now that we've voted on the best albums and songs for each year of the 70s, the time has come to put all of them in order!

The formula that I'm planning to use is:
100*(1+40)/(position+40)
Though I'm open to tinkering with it. The excel file to cast your vote with is attached to this post. To vote, put your rank (1, 2, 3, etc.) in the "rank" column of the excel sheet. If you haven’t heard a song or album, leave its rank blank. Those that you do not rank will be given the same number of points as the median of your list. Because of this, don't just rank what you like. Rank everything you've heard.

I'm setting the deadline for this at January 10, 2021. If there is a desire to push the deadline back, that can be discussed as it gets closer. To submit your list, send me a PM with your filled out excel sheet attached. There's also an optional "comment" column, if you want to add any comments they will be included in the final rollout. Also, if you didn't vote in any of the yearly polls, you are still encouraged to vote in the final round! The more the merrier!

I've made a Spotify playlist for the songs, but keep in mind that you should vote for your favorite version of a song, not the version that's part of the playlist (for example, if you prefer the live version of "No Woman, No Cry" you should vote for that version). The only song I wasn't able to find on Spotify was Band of Gold, and I also could only find the English version of Das Modell.

I will follow this up with a separate post with some stats and facts about our selections. Until then, here are the albums and songs we've determined to be the top 150/151 of their decade:

Ok, time for some stats and facts about our selections. Let's start with counts. For songs, David Bowie has the most selections, with 9, but Pink Floyd isn't far behind at 7. Here are all of the artists with multiple songs on the final list:

9: David Bowie
7: Pink Floyd
5: Stevie Wonder, Elvis Costello (& The Attractions)
4: Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young
3: ABBA, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Led Zeppelin, Queen, The Clash
2: Al Green, Big Star, Blondie, Bob Dylan, Dolly Parton, Iggy Pop, John Lennon, Kraftwerk, Lou Reed, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marvin Gaye, Patti Smith (Group), Ramones, Sex Pistols, Simon and Garfunkel, The Police, The Rolling Stones, The Wailers, The Who

David Bowie also leads the pack for albums with 7, and Neil Young is in second place with 6. Here's the full group of multi-album artists on the list:

7: David Bowie
6: Neil Young (& Crazy Horse)
5: Pink Floyd
4: Black Sabbath, Bob Marley & the Wailers, Brian Eno, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Wonder
3: Big Star, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello (& The Attractions), Joni Mitchell, Roxy Music, Steely Dan, The Rolling Stones, Wire
2: Bob Dylan, Can, Curtis Mayfield, Fleetwood Mac, Funkadelic, John Lennon, Jorge Ben, Kraftwerk, Lou Reed, Nick Drake, Talking Heads, The Clash, The Police, The Stooges, The Who

This only looks at the artist, of course. If you wanted to look at contributions, artists such as Iggy Pop or Lou Reed should really be higher because of their solo work and work with The Stooges and Velvet Underground respectively. Similarly, you could argue that Gary Numan/Tubeway Army could be combined here as well.

Here's how many songs and albums from each year made the cut:

Songs
1970: 16
1971: 15
1972: 17
1973: 15
1974: 14
1975: 12
1976: 14
1977: 15
1978: 17
1979: 15

Albums
1970: 17
1971: 17
1972: 14
1973: 16
1974: 15
1975: 13
1976: 13
1977: 17
1978: 17
1979: 11

I also decided to see if there was any correlation between a year's "strength" and how many entries into the final poll it had (because that was the basis behind using the wild card system). For the songs, there was a correlation of ~.14, and for the albums the correlation was ~.45. I determined the "strength" of a year using a modified version of Henrik's artists ranking formula: ln(ln(4+10000))-ln(ln(4+place)) for songs and ln(ln(4+3000))-ln(ln(4+place)) for albums, summing the top 25 from each year.

Here are the top 10 albums and songs from the main site that didn't make out list:

Rod Stewart | Every Picture Tells a Story | 206 | 64
Marvin Gaye | Let's Get It On | 215 | 70
Public Image Ltd. | Metal Box/Second Edition | 244 | 73
Parliament | Mothership Connection | 282 | 85
AC/DC | Highway to Hell | 286 | 87
The Who | Live at Leeds | 311 | 91

Song | Artist | AM Rank | Decade Rank
Rod Stewart | Maggie May | 140 | 27
Black Sabbath | Paranoid | 145 | 28
Sly and the Family Stone | Family Affair | 180 | 35
Chic | Le Freak | 192 | 38

That's too much for me with these songs.

You can also download an Excel Sheet and open it with Google Drive as a Google Sheet. Afterwards you can download that Google Sheet as an Excel File.

You don't have to rank every song - you can rank as many as you want. But it's worthwhile to rank as many songs as you've heard, including those that you dislike, because otherwise your least favorite songs will be treated as neutral.

Important update: the 50th wildcard spot for albums was actually a tie between All Mod Cons and Head Hunters, as both received 258 points in their respective year and both years had 37 votes. I didn't notice this yesterday, so only Head Hunters was listed on the original excel sheet. Instead of going through a tiebreaker, I decided to add All Mod Cons to the final round and make it a top 151 albums instead of 150.

So if you downloaded the excel sheet yesterday, please re-download and make sure All Mod Cons is there!

I appreciate you making the deadline a few days into the new year. When it's an end of year deadline it's always difficult for me to participate or I just forget. I have 20 albums to go to listen to all 151 so I'll work on that over this month

Well one other definite theme is the critics sleeping on Pink Floyd, which has always seemed odd to me given how revered they are on all other corners of the musical internet. I know they're still ranked 22nd, but a lot of their songs and albums are surprisingly low (including each of the four above, but those aren't even the most surprising examples for me).

This is true. Animals ranking in particular has always been shockingly low to me.

Albums
NEU! - NEU! '75 (1234)
Neil Young with Crazy Horse - Zuma (1304)
Milton Nascimento & Lô Borges - Clube da Esquina (1348)
Pink Floyd - Meddle (1351)
Eno - Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) (1362)
Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygène (1368)
Pink Floyd - Animals (1659)
Jorge Ben - África Brasil (2121)
Tom Zé - Estudando o samba (2322)
Jorge Ben - A Tábua de Esmeralda (2510)
Wow it is crazy that all of these albums are ranked outside of the top 1,000. Hopefully the lack of respect to Brazilian artists in particular will change as the years go on, as all of those albums are pretty accessible to an English language audience.

Here's another nugget: the top 10 songs and albums from the previous 70s poll (in 2014) to not make our list. I listed out all of the songs and albums that we lost in an earlier post, but I figured the highest rankers would be worth highlighting separately:

Songs
Sly and the Family Stone - Family Affair (25)
Marvin Gaye - Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler) (30)
Neil Young And Crazy Horse - Like A Hurricane (45)
David Bowie - Sound and Vision (49)
The Doors - Riders on the Storm (51)
The Who - Behind Blue Eyes (58)
Robert Wyatt - Sea Song (59)
Bobby Womack - Across 110th Street (63)
Van Morrison - Moondance (70)
Bruce Springsteen - Jungleland (73)

Albums
Jimmy Cliff and Various Artists - The Harder They Come (64)
Le Mystère Des Voix Bulgares - Le Mystère Des Voix Bulgares (87)
Todd Rundgren - Something/Anything? (99)
Van Morrison - Veedon Fleece (100)
The Beach Boys - Surf’s Up (101)
The B-52's - The B-52's (110)
Todd Rundgren - A Wizard, A True Star (111)
Steely Dan - The Royal Scam (112)
Kraftwerk - Radioaktivität (113)
New York Dolls - New York Dolls (115)

So far we have 6 song lists and 7 album lists. I expect most of the lists will come in over the last few days before the deadline. Here's who I've gotten a list from so far:

Akhenaten (songs)
Bang Jan (songs, albums)
Brad (songs, albums)
Carlos74 (albums)
Gillingham (albums)
Holden (songs, albums)
LIstyguy (songs, albums)
Schüttelbirne (songs, albums)

Hey we can submit an Excel sheet with the songs sorted by rank order correct? Or would that make it difficult for calculating the results.

I might as well ask, is there an app or function in a spreadsheet that allows for the easy ranking of items? I'm thinking something where you can just easily move an item up or down a large list as you compare different albums/songs, with the result at the end that you can just have a numbered column from top to bottom.

I would think I would be able to figure this out doing spreadsheets of different kinds at work, but nope! Thanks.

Yeah you can send me the excel sheet in rank order, as long as the artist/song columns aren't altered I can easily sort it.

I'm not all that familiar with excel myself, so I'm not sure if there's anything like that available.

It’s pretty easy to move columns/rows around in google sheets.

To clarify, I'm wondering if there is something like a custom version the website flickchart.com (warning, very addictive for movie fans) where you can load up a large list (like the 70s album one) and rank a list by having to choose one album or the other. I'm sure there's some kind of program out there that could do that?

Regardless, I'm pretty much done with my list ranked the old fashioned manual way. Trying to squeeze in a first listen to a few more 70s classics while I still have the time.

Is this maybe what you’re thinking of? Somebody posted it a few years back and I think it does what you’re asking, you just have to put in the list of albums first that you want to rank!

That used to work, at least. Didn’t work for me the last time I used it.

I plan on submitting a list of both songs and albums. The turnout is disappointing compared to how many voted in the monthly polls. I wonder if people need more time or if everyone (like me) is waiting until the deadline.

Hey Listyguy, just submitted my lists to you.

Looking forward to the results and thank you very much for organizing this poll!
It was a nice journey and was able to learn a lot of "new" 70's stuff in 2020.
