A final Christmas gift and this time a personal one, because today we get another one of my picks. I know that on first glance it might be more something Krurze might pick, but I assure you it is from my list and it is great! It even ranks on AM, at #7404. May this last day of Christmas be a dance party!

716. The Sabres of Paradise - Wilmot
Year: 1994
Album: Haunted Dancehall
Biggest Fan: Rob (#437)

Don’t forget you can always vote for earlier songs or change your vote!

It's decent, but I don't know if I could stand 7 and half minutes of that.

I indeed voted for a Sabres Of Paradise track, the glorious opener Still Fighting from their debut album! Wilmot is a nice dub workout, but I never quite got the acclaim. It's a solid 6/10 for me.

I don't rate many songs here, but my 1-10 looks something like:

10: Classic
9: Near-Classic
8: Very Good
7: Good
6: Pretty Good
5: Not Especially Good or Bad
4: Dull (generally speaking)
3: Fairly Annoying
2: Nearly Worthless (with something very mildly redeemable)
1: Worthless or Offensive

6-10 is positive territory, although a 5 is a very bare minimum positive rating, in a way.
A pretty strong album track might be an 8, and a hot radio hit might be a 10.

Examples (the very bottom ones are not from Biggest Fan)
10: Nirvana – Stay Away
9: Dead or Alive – You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)
8: Prince – U Got the Look
7: The Beatles – I Need You
6: R.E.M. - Belong
5: The Velvet Underground – New Age (not to mention a fair amount of Mike Oldfield albums)
4: Yes - White Car
3: Bryan Adams - Straight from the Heart
2: Mariah Carey – Hero
1: Liz Phair – Why Can’t I?

I think I’m nicer than most with my ratings:

10 - Excellent
09 - Great
08 - Very Good
07 - Good
06 - Fine
05 - Neutral
04 - Poor
03 - Bad
02 - Very Bad
01 - Horrible

I put 10s and high 9s on my All-Time Spreadsheet, and 8-10 on EOY spreadsheet lists. It’s very hard to get below a four in my mind.

Too bottom heavy. You have 4 out of 10 numbers that are poor or worse. BTW, I'd say that poor should be lower than bad.

Here's mine, they are much more generous than yours.

8 - Excellent

Catching up on the Christmas days:

Johann Sebastian Bach - Concerto for Two Violins in D minor, BWV 1043: I. Vivace: 7
A real rich interplay for the violins here. Not his most spiritually moving work, but more than worth a listen.

The Sabres of Paradise - Wilmot: 9
Dub, meets modern dance and some oddly middle-eastern influences. It sounds mechanical, steamy and somehow irresistible to me. There is a sense of movement here that alternates with relaxation in a way that I find appealing.

Ann Peebles – A Good Day for Lovin’: 6
Solid, but nothing too special.

What is this? I want the music from that french cartoon tv-series that discovered different time eras instead. Sure it was the same dude responsible for the music. Simply too much violins here. And a few notes too many. Also nerdy. They had to use whatever instruments they could come up with in 1043. No rhythm, no verse, bridge or chorus. I'm lost! Do you really think Jim Morrison would listen to this?

One of those songs that I recognize, but has never really registered with me. I certainly didn't recognize the title or band name. I guess I must have heard it a lot when it was a hit, but it never stood out. Listening to it now I like it a lot more. It's not a song that exerts itself too much, feeling like a grunge song played with restraint, but it becomes rather likeable after a few spins.

Atheist - Mother Man 5
Johann Sebastian Bach - Concerto for Two Violins in D minor, BWV 1043: I. Vivace 6
The Sabres of Paradise - Wilmot 7

Ann Peebles - A Good Day for Lovin' 8.5 Peebles goes funky, where has this been hiding all my life?

The Band - Across the Great Divide 4
Bagarre - Dirty Love 6
Collective Soul - Shine 3

I've not explained why I only use half-marks between 8 and 9, rather than for any other number, at least for songs (the only exceptions being album-long songs like Kashiwa Daisuke's Program Music III/'sons', which I'll give a 7.5 in the Rate the Album thread) but since we're discussing scoring systems, now seems the time.

With 10 indicating a song will be in or around my all-time top 500, 9 a guaranteed placement on my all-time longlist (if not necessarily shortlist) and 8 a qualifier for my year-end ballot, I wanted a distinction for tracks that I would feel comfortable declaring one of the best of its respective decade but not one of my favourite ever at that time. And because I didn't want to mess with my settled grades elsewhere, I plumped for an 8.5 to represent EOD contenders.

Carla Bley & Paul Haines - Why: 5

Recently I heard the opening track of the album, the 13 minute Hotel Overture and was impressed. I haven't heard te album yet and I think that is detrimental for Why. It feels like a short song that belongs in a bigger whole. I don't know if that is a correct assumption, but it feels like this song on it's own has no build-up.

I probably used to think that relatively weak radio fare like this helped dilute and kill grunge. But now I think that minor genre songs popping up everywhere don't especially hurt -- that some genres stick around for so long because the audience and performers have to barely want to move on (plus it helps if the bands aren't imploding). As one example, AC/DC has been making the same album for like 50 years, and their fans don't seem to mind.
