Re: 10 Song Gaps
Since I listened to the full top 10,000 from the previous update, doubtful I have a streak unless ten new songs somehow entered all in a row.
Re: 10 Song Gaps
Almost, the longest streak of new entries is 8 songs :
9878) Rosemary Clooney - Tenderly
9879) The Main Ingredient - Everybody Plays the Fool
9880) Roy Acuff and The Smoky Mountain Boys - Wreck on the Highway
9881) Nelly Furtado - Say It Right
9882) The Embassy - It Never Entered My Mind
9883) The Byrds - You Ain't Goin' Nowhere
9884) Rudy Vallée - Stein Song (University of Maine Fighting Song)
9885) Steve Winwood - Roll With It
Re: 10 Song Gaps
And of those, I've at least heard You Ain't Goin' Nowhere due to it featuring on Sweetheart of the Rodeo - I have an odd habit of listening to the higher albums I don't click with multiple times to see if there's something I'm not getting. Through doing so, I've discovered a love for Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen...The Byrds remain an enigma alongside most of the major hard rock acts...Nassim wrote: ↑Tue Dec 01, 2020 2:31 pmAlmost, the longest streak of new entries is 8 songs :

Re: 10 Song Gaps
I'm surprised that there are multiple people on the forum that have done this! I'm no completionist, but I feel like I listen to a lot of AM-ranked music, and I've still only heard about 40% of the top 10,000. While there are plenty of songs I love in the lower parts of the list, there are also many songs I know I won't like, and there are certainly many more efficient ways I can think of to discover new music.
So I'm curious, did you think it was worth it to complete the top 10,000?
Re: 10 Song Gaps
I think it was, but I viewed it more as a historical journey. Instead of going straight through the list, I tackled it by year, starting with the most recent and working backwards. But I'm also the type of person who generally likes experiencing music; it's rare for me to view listening to stuff I don't know as wasted time. Even if I don't particularly enjoy the song, I enjoy getting to know more about the specific eras they represent.Jackson wrote: ↑Tue Dec 01, 2020 9:46 pmI'm surprised that there are multiple people on the forum that have done this! That's been my approach with most art; it's not as much for my enjoyment as it about getting a better understanding of culture. If I enjoy it purely for itself, that's a bonus, but I simply enjoy the act of engaging with unfamiliar material.
Re: 10 Song Gaps
It's been worthwhile for me. I actually even went back this year through the 10,000 a second time, although this time I allowed myself to skip songs partway through. The process widened my appreciation for genres I would have dismissed in the past, and I now like a lot of songs whose appeal I could not understand at all when I first discovered this site. Yes, there are diminishing returns toward the end, but I have still found quite a few gems I wouldn't have otherwise discovered. It helped me fill out my own personal top 10,000 this year, and I think it's a lot more diverse than it would have been if I had just listened to songs by my established favorite artists.Jackson wrote: ↑Tue Dec 01, 2020 9:46 pmI'm surprised that there are multiple people on the forum that have done this! Re: 10 Song Gaps
"Say It Right" is one of those songs that I thought I hadn't heard until I heard it. That song was everywhere in the mid-2000s (at least in the USA). They should've called it "Oh You Don't Need Nothing at All From Me" or something.Nassim wrote: ↑Tue Dec 01, 2020 2:31 pmAlmost, the longest streak of new entries is 8 songs :

My first six song gap could be the following:
6410. Royal Blood - Figure It Out 2014
6411. New Orleans Rhythm Kings - Tin Roof Blues 1923
6412. Orchestra Baobab - Coumba 1982
6413. Falco - Rock Me Amadeus 1985
6414. Kurt Vile - Baby's Arms 2011
6415. Kanye West - Father Stretch My Hands 2016
But, I suspect that I likely have heard the Falco song and was not impressed.

Re: 10 Song Gaps
Interesting, as Save a Prayer and It's Raining Men are both songs that I feel are impossible to miss even if I wanted to. These two are everywhere. Maybe it's one of those cultural things were one song gets overplayed in one country and not at all in another, but I thought these two were universal.FrankLotion wrote: ↑Tue Dec 01, 2020 10:50 pm It took a while to find but I think this is the first 10 in a row that I hadn’t heard before:

Once you pass around 1982 or so I don't like too much of anything from after that.
Re: 10 Song Gaps
Love these lists and the fact that I've heard of at least one from each of them, but not many more. Since all of them I like* I should check out the rest.
* Except for "Tempted" by Squeeze. All the rest of their hits are great, tho.

Following up... There were 246 songs I didn't have in my library, and I added 30 of them to my top 10,000. I added 32 more to my top 10,000 that I had in my library but had never heard or hadn't heard in years. I'd say 30/246 is a lower hit rate than for a usual update because this update tilted so heavily to very old songs, but I did add two pre-1950 songs: Someday (You'll Want Me to Want You) by The Mills Brothers and Don't Get Around Much Anymore by The Ink Spots.andyd1010 wrote: ↑ It's been worthwhile for me.
