This was a really great year for music and the albums below are the ones that resonated with me the most. It hurts a bit to put a lot of them this low, but I decided not to keep working on the list because ultimately it's just a list. I definitely need to compile a list during the year in 2021, because making this list and the song list (especially that one), required two months. And then when I thought I had finished, Luise Volkmann comes along and begs to be considered, so I put her on #5, pushing Matmos out of the Top 10. Did I mention how much ranking hurts?

Regarding classical music: I only put in albums that contain compositions not previously recorded. For example, the Eckart Runge album includes the Cello Concerto by Schnittke (which was previously recorded) and the Cello Concerto by Kapustin which was released first on this album. I hope this is okay.

I struggled with myself because I always complain about critics' lists not being diverse enough and my list probably wouldn't hold up to my high standards. But I'm not a critic, so I'll just let it stand as it is.

Anyways, here's the album list. The songs list should be up a bit later today:

Here's the song list. I've been working on it every day for the past two months and I am not satisfied with it at all. It could look completely different if I redid it because I change my opinions on songs all the time. But I won't work further on it to prevent destruction of my nerves.

At the end you'll find the 2020 playlist I used (most of the stuff on here is on there too), but the order is a complete mess. There's also my 2020s playlist where everything should be in the order of this list (hopefully).

I only added classical works that weren't recorded before this year (to my knowledge). I considered the individual movements as songs; there just happened to be Rouse's Fifth Symphony which only has one movement and stands as a block of 30 minutes at #98. If this is not eligible, please tell me and I will remove it. Same with Dragged Into Sunlight's "Terminal Aggressor II" (#14) which is 29 minutes long (that's not classical, though).

My number 500 is "Phallus and Chalice" which is better and way funnier than "WAP" ever could be (I feel the need to defend that song because it is really, really weird).

Some stellar write-ups, getting your point across succinctly and entertainingly. Your view of FTBC won't be the most popular round here (or anywhere) but it corresponds closely with my own in that it's a fantastic album whose repetition stops me from granting it classic status.

Yeah, going off of the rules I used last time, "It Might Be Time" would be eligible, but "Borderline" and "Patience" are not, because the top 100 of last year's is the cut-off.

Thanks! I'm glad you like them.
I discovered Starebaby rather recently, and was blown away by their incredibly powerful jazz/metal hybrid, so I felt obliged to put them at number 1. "A Taste of a Memory" features the best guitar work of the year, imo.

Apparently they're already planning a third album, this time not based on Twin Peaks.

Did you ever say what formula you were using, acroamor?

Also, I'm up to 93 albums with 100+ points, so almost to a full list! There are actually 7 unique number ones at one hundred points, which is a lot more than last year, if they don't get any more votes (though I suspect several will).

I'm using =IF(N2>0,100*((1+20)/(N2+20)), " "), which is slightly different than the albums one but it worked well for the EOD albums poll and seems to be working well for this.

I don't feel all those stylistic experiments thrown together gel the same way as they did on the 1st Program Music but it's still one of the listening experiences of the year, one that shouldn't have gone under the radar. I'm grateful for you posting as well, otherwise I'd be editing my list like mad! I'll leave it at that though, the songs list is proving enough of a headscratcher.

I'll need to acquaint myself with more KS, including Program Music II- I only became aware of PM1 after raiding your AT list last year and it quickly became a key album for me. I can't say I'm stunned at all that you've got a laudable 2020 list from your #1 onwards!

I'm terrible at keeping up with new music. I watch TheNeedleDrop, but barely ever listen to new releases since I more just enjoy catching up to older stuff I've missed. It also doesn't help that whenever I listen to something new (for me) that I tend to keep listening to it for at least a week or two to develop my thoughts. That said, I did listen to the new Strokes album and LOVED it which surprised me because I didn't think I would ever love another Strokes album ever again. Seriously, that thing is a 10/10 for me, so I guess that makes it my AOTY by default. Ode to the Mets would probably be my SOTY.
