Biography from Allmusic

With their origins in Orange County, California, and their current incarnation based out of Nashville, Tennessee, atmospheric alt-rock outfit the Choir have undergone their fair share of changes throughout their long career. Formed in 1984 under the moniker Youth Choir, and built around the distinctive playing of guitarist and vocalist Derri Daugherty, the evocative lyrics of drummer Steve Hindalong, and the inventive, ambient post-rock flourishes of guitar player Marc Byrd, rounded out by saxophone and Lyricon player Dan Michael and bass player Tim Chandler, the band spent its early days infusing its signature blend of shoegaze, soaring alt-rock, and melodic psych-pop with a spiritual core. Prolific and critically lauded, but unable to bridge the gap (financially) between CCM and the mainstream -- successful faith-based alt-rockers such as Jars of Clay, Switchfoot, and Sixpence None the Richer cite the Choir as a significant influence -- the band considered closing up shop in 1996, shortly after relocating to Nashville and releasing its ninth studio album, Free Flying Soul. Wisely, they chose to stick it out and landed a Grammy Award nomination for 2000s independently released Flap Your Wings, which led to successful subsequent recordings like O How the Mighty Have Fallen (2005), Burning Like the Midnight Sun (2010), The Loudest Sound Ever Heard (2012), and Shadow Weaver (2014), the latter of which saw the group moving in a more secular direction.

One of the Most Underrated Classics of the Late 80s
This is definitely the best album The Choir has ever recorded. Sadly, it was overlooked and under-appreciated at the time of it's release. Fortunately more and more are discovering it now a days, but it remains very sadly underrated. Even here at RYM. This is an album that should be in bold print here.

Remaining true to the Post-Punk of The Choir's early career, they add a strong measure of Alternative Rock which was in keeping with the times of course. U2 was riding high in the charts when this album came out and there is no doubt that U2, The Church and other contemporaries played a part with the influence here. However, the band seemed to hit a place where the stars were perfectly aligned for them. The chemistry is magical.

From the opening track, "Consider" (with it's all-encompassing drum rolls and jangly, dreamy substance) to the closing masterpiece that is "Kangaroo" (with it's jarring and out of control, the sky is the limit crescendo build up - that makes the listener want to soar into unlimited heavenly places), the album is just about a masterpiece of epic proportion. I say just about, because there are a couple songs that don't quite stand out like the majority of the songs do.

The music is basically a very original hybrid of Alternative Rock and Post-Punk (think The Cure meets U2 with The Church thrown in, only original and not a rip-off whatsoever), some of the songs are Jangle Pop and there is even some Dream Pop placed here and there - ensuring the extra goodness needed to sing with the angels. The vibe is spiritual, but not religious at all. Overall - there is an almost 'cleansing' feel to this that just washes over the listener and lets them know that everything will be okay. God is real and you can feel God in almost each of these songs. This album should have been up in the charts with U2's "The Joshua Tree", which came out about the same time. Both albums are very similar and spiritual.

Recommended for all fans of Alternative Rock and Post-Punk. You NEED this album!

Chase The Kangaroo - 7/10

This album covers a few genres that I usually love: post-punk and jangle pop. It's not the pinnacle of either, but the overall sound is still something I can enjoy plenty.

Tocotronic - K.O.O.K. 6.2 (my #27 for 1999)

Strong in parts but their debut and Blumfeld's first strike more gold with similar material.

My highlights: Der gute Rat, Rock Pop in Concert, Um die Ecke (gedacht)

This month's highlights ranked:
I'm Tired, I'm Tired, I'm Tired
At the End of the Rainbow
Someone out There
Get out My Life
Things Got to Get Better
Der gute Rat
No Birds Today
Rock Pop in Concert
Unwind Yourself
Miles from Our Home
Um die Ecke (gedacht)
In the Middle

51. The Choir - Chase The Kangaroo: 4.5
Can't sugarcoat it - I just don't care for this much. The guitarist sounds inspired and occasionally hits some cool atmospheric realms, but even these get torn down by the vocalist, who seems not quite up to the task (and those lyrics...). Production is obviously very '80's and I can look past that, but really don't need to hear again.

Thanks!

51. The Choir - Chase The Kangaroo (1988) - 5
I should enjoy this, and I do at points (e.g. Fade Into You, the first few songs). However, the album both drags and feels monotonous to me, an achievement for an album that is only about an hour and does try out a bunch of styles over its runtime.

I think I should come back to this another time and see if I feel the same, because my mixed reaction feels wrong for something that has so many features that should appeal.

51. The Choir - Chase The Kangaroo (1988)

This album is a mixed bag for me. The songwriting is really quite good, as is the general sound, not marred by the horrible 80s production some of these artists used at the time.
It veers between Simple Minds new wave leanings and the Australian pop-rock of Crowded House. Both rather good references and it's a pleasant listen, it just doesn't wow me. Not risky enough, as this was released at the end of the 80s.

I should note that when this was released on CD a few tracks from their earlier incarnation as Youth Choir were included.

These tracks are actually NOT part of CHASE THE KANGAROO in case that alters anyone's feelings about it in either direction:
Fade Into You
15 Doors
More Than Words
Tears Don't Fall
All Night Long
"The laughs come hard in Old Lang Syne....."

The Choir - Chase The Kangaroo: 5
For me this album is just kind of there. I'm not really fond of this type of slick eighties production and the vocals are also typically over-earnest. However, both don't even bother me all that much. It's just that there aren't any songs here that really grabbed me. Like Brad I liked a guitar moment here and there, but this won't be an album I will remember, I'm afraid.

Biography from Allmusic

A distinctive, emotionally candid singer/songwriter, Courtney Marie Andrews rose through the ranks of indie rock in the early 2010s before settling into the Americana milieu in the second half of the decade. Andrews specialized in nakedly intimate songs whose plaintiveness gained depth through her delicate delivery. She unveiled this skill on Honest Life, her third album and first to gain widespread attention. Earning strong reviews on both sides of the Atlantic, May Your Kindness Remain expanded her following further in 2018, as did 2020's Old Flowers.

Allmusic and Amazon use your image as the album cover. This image here is what's on my old iPod, so I assume it passed as the album cover at the time. I used to hang around the local singer-songwriter scene, and Andrews was the one breakout star. She wasn't country at all back then, though. Anyway, since you've got me talking, I'll give this album an 8.

Got to give it to the chap, though, he racked his brains for this one.

Painter's Hands and a Seventh Son - 6/10

Perhaps the most obscure album in this game to date? It's RYM ratings are currently in the single digits. The album itself is fine, but in my opinion it's too long for an album where so many of the songs sound pretty similar.

I listened to last year's Old Flowers and wasn't exactly thrilled, but this early album is really good:

Quite pleasantly taken by Andrews voice - she doesn't fall in the easy category of "alt country" where so many of her peers have got swamped in. It's emotional and musically mature.
Nice discovery, LiveinPhoenix !

Courtney Marie Andrews - Painter's Hands and a Seventh Son: 7
I knew Courtney Marie Andrews from the 2018 album May Your Kindness Remain, which I quite liked. The title track from that album is a sentimental favorite.
This early effort is very different. No lush country soul or soul country, but instead sparse and folksy. Her voice, in the future as well-groomed as the best singers, is here a mix between graceful beauty and a certain roughness. I was alternately reminded of Aly Spaltro of Lady Lamb and the sisters from First Aid Kit (all of whom started making music after this). At the moment there isn't a particular song that has really stuck, but it is a very fine album to listen too. I'm just a sucker for this kind of folk. Also nice to have something of a truly obscure release here, though I think Andrews shouldn't be ashamed to re-release this or just generally make it more widely available.

Thanks to this game I found out the Courtney Marie Andrews is actually holding a concert next Friday in my hometown. Now I have bought tickets.

Biography from Allmusic

Born Ásgeir Trausti Einarsson in the diminutive hamlet of Laugarbakki, Icelandic singer/songwriter Ásgeir specializes in intimate, soulful songs that span indie electronic and atmospheric folk. An overnight success in his native Iceland, where the then 21-year-old released his 2012 debut album, Dýrð í Dauðaþögn, and quickly broke every regional record in the book (it's estimated that almost ten percent of the Icelandic population owns the album), Ásgeir's unique songs are made all the more idiosyncratic by the fact that his 72-year-old father, poet Einar Georg Einarsson, provides the majority of the lyrics. In 2013, with the help of Iceland-based American singer/songwriter John Grant, who helped to translate the lyrics, Asgeir released an English version of Dýrð í Dauðaþögn (In the Silence) on the One Little Indian label. It charted in several other countries, including the U.K. and Australia. While that album featured a mix of acoustic guitar and wistful electronic tracks, the follow-up, 2017's Afterglow, took on bolder, more experimental electronic textures.

A fan's review (This is for the Dýrð í dauðaþögn Icelandic, original version of the album)
Boyofbattle Feb 21 2013

Holy Shit.

Bon Iver move aside! Better voice, better melodies, that wonderful Icelandic language, weird time-signatures, SUBLIME production and about everything else you can imagine.

The album is basically a songwriting showcase of awesomeness. There's obviously a language barrier, but I feel that Icelandic is so mesmerizing that it never bothers me.

If you're a fan of Jonsi/Sigur Ros/Bon Iver, this should be a must have.

Courtney Marie Andrews - Painter's Hands and a Seventh Son 7.5 (my #11 for 2019)

My highlights: Common Ground for a Wallflower, Lullaby Kid, A Seventh Son, Painter's Hands

There's no individual song on here that can touch Guilty from CMA's last album (the way that track ends gives me as-honest-to-God-as-an-atheist-can-get lump in my throat) but I'm fonder of the earlier album's overall sound and songwriting. As Rob says, it's a lot more frayed at the edges and Andrews seems less saintly than nowadays, which is to ...Seventh Son's credit. A real crate dig from Live in Phoenix!

In the Silence - 7/10

I can see why the Bon Iver comps have sprung up around this one, Ásgeir does have a Justin Vernon vocal style (and a bit of a Justin Vernon instrumental style, too). There are some great tracks on the album, including "Torrent" and "Higher," but most of it is good.

Ásgeir - In the Silence: 5
I vaguely remember that a Dutch radio station I listened to at the time actually played some songs from this album. That I don't recognize the songs says basically everything. For this, I actually listened to both the original Icelandic recording as the English version. Both aren't exactly captivating, but this is a recording where understanding the languages actually takes away from the experience. The lyrics aren't interesting enough and Icelandic at least sounds somewhat mysterious.
The album isn't bad per se. I initally even went for a 6. But the whole thing strikes me as holly unmemorable. I hear the Bon Iver connection as well, but whereas Bon Iver's music is richly textured, this sounds more basic and very thin. There doesn't seem much to it.

I'm actually impressed by this album. I had listened to "Unbound" by the same artist in 2017 but never went beyond it. It's vaguely familiar and could easily veer to a brand of synthpop I'm not fond of. But Asgeir's voice is something else. He hits the right note on every song and the music is subtle and gentle enough to keep me interested. The melodies are luscious and quite immediate, no need to listen to "In the Silence" multiple times to get caught.
A very pleasant aural experience.

Biography from Allmusic

Hungarian progressive rock band Solaris got its start in 1980. The group was formed by István Cziglán (guitar), Róbert Erdész (keys), Attila Kollár (flute), Attila Seres (bass), and Vilmos Tóth (drums). They took their name, and the content of all their songs, from classic science fiction. They released their self-titled debut the same year. Other musicians who have made their way into the Solaris camp at varying times include Csaba Bogdán (guitar), Tamás Pócs (bass), László Gömör (drums), Gábor Kisszabó (bass), and Ferenc Raus (drums). During the course of their career, Solaris has released a number of other albums. Those albums are Marsbéli Krónikák -- Martian Chronicles (1984; reissued as Martian Chronicles in Japan in 1989 and also reissued in Hungary under the original title in 1995), Solaris 1990 (1990), Live in Los Angeles (1996), Nostradamus (1999), and Los Angeles 2026 (2000).

A fan's review
ashratom May 28 2018

If you ask a hardcore progressive rock fan what the worst decade of music was, "The 80s" is the automated response. And while I'll stand by that same position, a deep dive into the decade gives us another perspective. 1980 was in reality an extension of the 70s artistically speaking. 1981 to 1983 held plenty of wonderful privately released progressive rock gems primarily from France, Scandinavia, USA, and Germany. Not to mention the promise the original New Wave of British Progressive Rock once projected. And then from 1987 onward, we experienced the renaissance that continues to this day. But the real barren years did exist in the middle - 1984 to 1986 was a graveyard for traditional progressive rock. Fans of fringe areas - like avant prog - will counter that it may have been the golden age as bands like Univers Zero and Present were at their peak. And of course other genres, like heavy metal and various forms of electronic, were also experiencing new high water marks. But if you wanted 70's styled symphonic prog, well it was going to be tough sledding for sure.

I bring this point up in a Solaris review, because Marsbeli Kronikak is the gem in the rough - the very best symphonic prog album in that 3 year time frame. Isolated in still Communist Hungary may have played a role in that - not to mention a relatively more lenient regime in regards to the arts than other Iron Curtain countries at the time.

Recently I had reviewed Tako's second album, and talked about symphonic fusion - a genre that isn't recognized today, but was frequently referred to 25 years ago and beyond. And that's exactly where you'll find the music of Solaris. The primary difference here is the copious use of sequencer based electronics that lay the bedrock for the symphonic progressive music on top. Attila Kollar's flute is magnificent as ever, and he often drives the instantly-recognizable Solaris style melodies. Istvan Cziglan's hard edged guitar, and Robert Erdesz's fine synthesizer work round out the leads.

For us prog fans back in the mid 80's who were desperate for quality 70s styled progressive rock, Solaris was a godsend. In retrospect some 35 years later- they still are.

Marsbéli Krónikák - 7/10

As far as prog albums go, this one isn't on the level with my favorites. The "Marsbéli Krónikák" suite in particular just wasn't my thing, but some of the B-side tracks like "Solaris" were pretty cool.

Solaris - Marsbéli krónikák: 7
Cosmic prog rock that might have sounded like the future in 1984. Did it really? It seems rather quaint and dated even for it's age. Which is not to say it isn't enjoyable. The futuristic synth (or Moog or what is it?) may be cheesy by any standards, but the band gives it their all and as a piece of proggy showmanship it does kind of impress. So this is more Rush than King Crimson, but once if you can get past the silliness, you will get some trippy fun that even manages to overwhelm every now and then.

Solaris - Marsbéli krónikák (1984): 8

I just happened to listen to this straight after ELP's woeful Brain Salad Surgery.
This is much better stuff. I like the only instrumental side to this and the flute is a nice addition but Solaris don't eschew the guitars. It's not a guitar/drums virtuoso mess, with players trying to better their comrade's technical skills. There are tunes here, but the prog rock is never straying too far.

Knowing this was laid out during a Hungarian still communist regime, I think it's a small miracle the album was created at all.
Very enjoyable.

53. Ásgeir - In the Silence (2013) 5/10
54. Solaris - Marsbéli krónikák (1984) 6/10

Every band/act has been influenced by previous bands/acts. But I don't like when the influence is restricted only to a particular act. Bon Iver and Camel in these cases...

Biography from Allmusic

Known for a uniquely fluid and melodic yet mumbling vocal style, rapper Future busted out of the South at the dawn of the 2010s with a flurry of mixtapes, high-charting albums, certified platinum singles, and contributions to several other hits as a featured artist. After he scored his first commercial hit via a guest spot on YC's "Racks" (2011), Future quickly became a key factor in Atlanta's grip on the Billboard charts, often with production support from fellow ATL natives and dwellers such as Metro Boomin, Mike WiLL Made-It, Sonny Digital, and Southside. By the end of 2017, Future had amassed 32 Top Ten R&B/hip-hop hits as a headliner and featured artist. Meanwhile, 11 full-length projects -- including an all-platinum run of DS2 (2015), Evol (2016), and Future (2017) -- debuted within the Top Five of the Billboard 200. Future capped off the 2010s by adding to his Top 20 tally with the Grammy-winning "King's Dead," co-producing a remake of Super Fly, and hitting the top of the Billboard 200 again with The Wizrd (2019). He has since returned to the throne with High Off Life (2020), his eighth proper album..

A fan's review
the_odb_as_you_can_see Dec 12 2017

Still Future's best release. All these beats are just otherworldly and Future's vocals are perfected as they ride along them. Every feature is the perfect choice for their song and they all come with their best. The Snoop and Drake songs are especially great. Straight Up is a top notch lose your mind in amped up ecstasy banger. Same Damn Time needs no introduction. Neva End and Turn on the Lights bring more genuine emotion and beauty than most of the trap about feelings that's come out since. Even the weakest songs on here, Parachute and Astronaut Chick, still sound great. This is one of the pinnacles of pop rap of the decade.

Pluto - 6/10

Better than I was expecting, based on my previous experiences with trap music of the last decade. With that said, it's not without its flaws. The most notable one being that it's too long. There's plenty of songs here that could've been dropped and I wouldn't have missed them at all.

Future - Pluto (2012): 3
A rare case were I chose to listen to the week's album only once. It was very hard for me to get through. This goes doubly for the first half, which contains an overload of auto-tune, which I tend to find unpleasant to listen and makes it hard for me to put this on a second time. Outside of that there is little to enjoy. The lyrics don't do anything for me and I find the trap sound rather staid. Maybe I just don't understand this sub-genre, but this album is simply not for me. The only thing worth saving is Same Damn Time, which feels a lot more lively than anything else. Is it just me or does Future's rapping skills go up a notch there?

I'm 90% with you, Rob
Future - Pluto (2012): 4/10
It's actually quite surprising that trap rap is almost 10 years old now.
The auto-tune which Future is using here is abominable, it shows a lack of talent, passing for novelty.
The featured artists (Snoop Dog, R. Kelly, Trae Tha Truth) do a far better job than their host on this album - as they don't use the awful autotune gizmo.

Agree with you on Same Damn Time, by far the best by Future - although Long Live the Pimp and Parachute lift the rest, but not enough out of the water. And Listyguy is also spot on - far too long an album to be enjoyable.

Future - Pluto 3.3 (my #36 for 2012)

The fact that the king of mumble rap can't have taken enough molly and lean by this stage of his career to sound wholly incomprehensible is this album's main saving grace.

Biography from Allmusic

The daughter of '50s British pop singer Marty Wilde, Kim Wilde had several hits during the '80s. Initially, her synth-driven pop fit in with the new wave movement, but as the decade progressed, it became clear that her strength was mainstream pop. She continued to record into the 21st century, scoring the occasional hit, either in the dance or adult contemporary field.

Select
In 1980, Wilde signed with producer Mickie Most's Rak Records, releasing her first single, "Kids in America," early in 1981. It climbed to number two on the British charts that spring, while her second single, "Chequered Love," made it into the Top Ten; her self-titled debut album performed as well as her singles. The following year, "Kids in America" became a Top 40 hit in America, while Select kept her in the British charts. However, it wasn't until late 1986 that she had another U.S. hit with a dance cover of the Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On," which charted in the Top Ten on both sides of the Atlantic. In the intervening years, and for the rest of the decade, Wilde maintained a strong European chart presence, proving her longevity in the Austrian, German, Belgian and Swiss markets.

A fan's review
Marek34 Feb 28 2007

It is the most popular studio album in Kim Wilde's career. It produced few hit singles and hit TOP 10 on most European charts. In UK it spawned three consecutive TOP 10 singles and two more that hit TOP 40. "Close" is pop record. We won't find here any punk, new wave or other genres that Wilde had explored before in her career (especially when she recorded for RAK records). "Close" sounds just like if it was produced by Stock/Aitkan/Waterman. But I think it's much stronger than any effort they produced for acts like: Rick Astley, Bananarama or Kylie Minogue. Wilde's vocal is not strong but she does good job singing these little pop songs. Best cuts include: "You Came" (second single and one of the signature songs of Kim's career), "Love In The Natural Way" (fifth single, although not a hit it sounds just like #1 smash), "Never Trust A Stranger" (top disco number with perfect guitar intro) and "Love's A No" (the best ballad off the album).
