Post by Holden »

Image

Following with the poll from last month, in which I asked you to post your favorite The Beach Boys songs and albums in ranked lists and then compiled them, this month we will be moving on to the next artist on the list, R.E.M.!
Please post as many songs/albums in your lists as you would like, but please at least ten songs and five albums. We'll only be doing studio albums, no live albums, so I'll post a list of eligible ones below. Thank you and have fun! Deadline will be November 30th, and I will be continuing to use the EOY Albums/Songs formula for this one.
Here are eligible albums:
01 | Murmur
02 | Reckoning
03 | Fables of the Reconstruction
04 | Lifes Rich Pageant
05 | Document

Albums:
1 | Murmur
I had already heard a few R.E.M. albums, but I was assured that, no, you need to listen to this one. This was when i was armed with my first music lists and was just seriously getting into music listening. Like all their great ones, basically every song is worthwhile, operating at a level that they arguably never matched, certainly more mysterious than Out of Time or Automatic for the People. It seems like an odd mystery that this album even exists.

2 | Out of Time
Because of my age, and perhaps because of the power of a Number One album, this is when I was introduced to R.E.M. Both Spin and Rolling Stone ranked this higher than Nevermind at the end of the year. Maybe they were glad at the time that R.E.M. finally exploded. But hey, it's a great record, too, even as a distant third on our main site's ranking.

3 | Automatic for the People
Because it didn't have a blockbuster single, and maybe because I haven't sometimes liked "The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite," I had somewhat underrated this album. But their first curveball album was their best, a graceful, quiet experience much of the time. The last of their great ones.

4 | Monster
I had this at #5 for a moment, but I guess I feel like it operates at a slightly higher, superstar, level compared to Green. Personal trivia: A guy in my high school guitar class saw my Monster T-shirt and basically wrote off R.E.M. because the singer was a "fag." My eternal high school crush, with a cool alternative/punk rock vibe, loved R.E.M. God, who do you think won that argument with me?

5 | Green
It flags a little at times, but this was their first very good album since the days of Murmur. After 6 LPs in 6 years, they oddly took 3 years off, but the good news in retrospect is that they were just getting started, making this album practically a footnote.

6 | Reveal
Often spacious and lovely, this is the only time the band justified their post-Bill Berry existence. Michael Stipe doesn't like the Beatles, but whether he knows it or not, in the later years his band followed the Beatle template of changing everything around by the time of the next album. In practice this meant that by the time of Around of the Sun, they threw out any advancements made by this album and decided to fumble around again.

7 | Document
In-between Murmur and their Warner Bros. albums, the band released an album a year, and although they're reviewed very well, I generally find them overrated. I find this album unexciting in places, but it's probably the best of the '84-'87 bunch. "It's the End of the World..." is the classic, and "Fireplace" is a good album cut.

8 | Fables of the Reconstruction
This is basically "Feeling Gravitys Pull," "Driver 8," and "Wendell Gee," although the atmosphere is fairly good throughout.

Chronic Town
You wouldn't really think that the band had Murmur in them, judging from this. But it's not bad, and their aesthetic is already completely in place.

9 | Lifes Rich Pageant
The last Rolling Stone Album Guide acted like the '80s, and this album in particular, were when this band was, you know, really good. (They could probably be embraced by critics and cult band listeners as "their" band.) I couldn't go past 3-star territory with this, as except for a few cuts, I don't even really like listening to this.

10 | New Adventures in Hi-Fi
Their last Bill Berry album was not up to their recent standards, but if they had gone out on this, it would have been their beloved-enough equivalent of Let It Be (or In Through the Out Door, or Return of the Jedi).

11 | Reckoning
The weakest of the '80s albums, with only a handful of songs of interest. But I'm glad they blew all their material making Murmur great.

Dead Letter Office
Just an album of screwing around, but you already know the standard when you read "b-sides and outtakes." Entertaining at times. Their cover of Pylon's "Crazy" is my favorite non-studio album track of theirs.

12 | Around the Sun
Just boring in long stretches. Not the worst just because "Electron Blue" and the title track are their last halfway decent songs.

13 | Up
They'd never delivered such a lousy album. It's pretty bad when a random album cut, "Diminished," is maybe the highlight. This is like the kind of album that relatively short-lived bands avoided by getting out at the right time.

14 | Accelerate
Out of nowhere, the band goes from sleepwalking to rocking the fuck out. Unfortunately, I've listened to this a dozen times, and the songs just aren't really there.

15 | Collapse into Now
By the end, the muse was totally gone. I've often gotten the impression that record-making at a high level is unsustainable, so I have to be realistic, I suppose...

I'm not as much of a fan of R.E.M. as an album artist. I've listened to most of their discography, and although I like most of their ranked songs, there are only a handful of unranked album tracks of theirs that I enjoy. I guess I'm missing something, seeing as their album artist ranking is ahead of Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.

I agree. I feel like their LPs run together and are hard to differentiate. (except from their big three, Murmur, AFTP, and Out of Time)

The discography of R.E.M. can be easily divided in three parts (with 5 albums each): a) the indie period, the I.R.S. years, when they defined the sound of the Amerindie nation, b) the breakthrough period, the Warner years, when they managed to be acclaimed by both critics and audience and c) the final period, the post-Berry years, a worthy coda of a really valuable career.

Albums:

1. Automatic for the People (1992, my #54 album of all-time)
"Berlin" in the seventies, "Nebraska" in the eighties and "Automatic for the People" in the nineties. Just when they were at the height of its popularity, R.E.M. were bold enough to release an album filled by moody and sombre songs, with delicate arrangements (special mention to John Paul Jones orchestral arrangements) and deeply cryptic lyrics (with "ruminations on mortality, loss, mourning and nostalgia"). And, although it could be seen a commercial suicide, they succeeded again.

2. Lifes Rich Pageant (1986, #240)
December 1986. I was listening to Radio 3 (the best Spanish music radio channel) and they were playing their albums of the year. They played "Superman" from a band I never heard of, I loved it at first sight and the following week I bought my first R.E.M. album. Then I learned that the song was a cover, sung by the bass player and not too representative of the band sound. Anyway I got caught by the album and its sound simultaneously murky and brilliant (if this makes sense). For sentimental reasons.

3. Out of Time (1991)
With this album they went suddenly to mainstream. Their sell-out album? Mmm, I wish every band could sell out so beautifully.

4. Murmur (1983)
R.E.M. debut, gathering instant critic acclaim because of the original (angular/jangle) sound and Stipe's undecipherable lyrics.

5. Green (1988)
Yes, a third album from the Warner period in my Top 5. R.E.M. still political but with the messages tinged by an unheard irony.

6. Document (1987)
7. New Adventures in Hi-Fi (1996)
8. Reckoning (1984)
9. Chronic Town (1982)
10. Up (1998)

11. Reveal (2001)
12. Fables of the Reconstruction (1985)
13. Monster (1994)
14. Accelerate (2008)
15. Around the Sun (2004)
16. Collapse Into Now (2011)

Songs:

1. Losing My Religion (1991, my #26 song of all time)
Life is bigger, bigger than you. Michael Stipe sends out a litany of inscrutable (but heartfelt) confessions. That's me in the spotlight, losing my religion. Peter Buck plays a mandolin out of time, backed by a subdued Mills and Berry and by some glorious strings. Consider this the hint of the century. A brilliant arty music video filled by dream-like religious imagery. The poetic (and commercial) zenith that R.E.M. were pursuing from the early eighties. But I've said too much. I haven't said enough.

2. Fall on Me (1986)
This song sums up the greatness of the IRS period. A not preachy environmental message, an energetic but melodic performance.

3. Nightswimming (1992)
Mills circular piano, Jones strings, Workman oboe and Stipe voice. Singing nostalgic lyrics about longing, about lost innocence.

4. It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine) (1987)
Stipe homesick blues. Verses with rapid fire lyrics and the most exhilarating chorus ever. Jangle-rock can't get better than this.

5. (Don't Go Back To) Rockville (1984)
I'm a big fan of Mike Mills. Probably the best backing vocalist and also a gifted songwriter, here with a cornerstone of alt. country.

6. Country Feedback (1991)
7. Find the River (1992)
8. Imitation of Life (2001)
9. The One I Love (1987)
10. World Leader Pretend (1988)
11. Talk About the Passion (1983)
12. Near Wild Heaven (1991)
13. Everybody Hurts (1992)
14. Orange Crush (1988)
15. Radio Free Europe (1981)

Looking at the lists I'd thought I was the only one who'd heard this gem from Murmur's deluxe edition!

Here's how the future looks with the new update:
12/20: Elvis Presley
01/21: Kanye West
02/21: U2

and then just following the list from then on. Surprising drop for The Who, but other than that there aren't anything that takes us off the path fo the list.

I've always been somewhat mystified by the level of R.E.M.'s acclaim; while I've always enjoyed some of their top songs, their albums never struck me as masterpieces and they don't seem to have the cultural impact or musical influence of the other artists at this level. I did a lot of listening to them this month and it definitely expanded my appreciation. I'll never be one of their top fans, but the level of consistency and the amount of good-to-great music they made over their first ten years is impressive.

In Spotify I saw Honorio listening to an R.E.M. top 100 last night, which made me curious. Today I noticed it is connected to this thread. I am too late for the poll, no problem, but I still can share my lists with you.

In 1985 I heard an R.E.M. song for the first time on the radio. It was Can't Get There from Here. Ever since that year, so for 35 (!) years now R.E.M. has been my favorite all-time band.

My 5 favorite R.E.M. albums:
1. Murmur
2. Life's Rich Pageant
3. Automatic for the People
4. Reckoning
5. Out of Time
If the EP Chronic Town would be eligible, it would be on number 2 (closely after Murmur).

My 15 favorite R.E.M. songs:
1. Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars)
2. Losing my Religion
3. So. Central Rain
4. Texarkana
5. World Leader Pretend
6. Radio Free Europe (the '81 version ofcourse)
7. Cuyahoga
8. Fall on Me
9. Everybody Hurts
10. E-Bow the Letter
11. Man on the Moon
12. It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
13. Perfect Circle
14. The One I Love
15. Electrolite
